Usual warning… Mains powered, no battery

    • Ohh, always mains power needed, such a shame.

      • Yes. A limitation.
Bought the $99 JBL Link Portable from BigW in Deal end of last year. Battery powered with handy charging base.
        Wasn't that impressed with sound.

Being waterproof affects the sound quality, but mine is used around the pool, and with that in mind, I think the sound is pretty awesome

    • Considering it isn't advertised as a portable speaker, why would a warning be required?

      • +3

Because it's a common misconception in these Deals. Some have argued it must be!
It looks like it would be battery powered.

        • -1

If people take it at face value that it's portable (based on a picture) and don't bother looking at the specs, that's their problem, really.

          • +4

@KangaDrew: This model has been referred to as "portable" (meaning only that it can be moved around) in past advertising! Portable doesn't necessarily mean battery powered.

There are 2 JBL units that almost look the same & named similarly. The battery version's name includes "Portable", the mains powered is this "Music".

Here's one of the arguments about the specs, battery, portability… Almost the entire Deal was debating whether the unit had a battery!

It's easy to warn. Some quickly buy on price without checking specs. It's easy to miss out on Deals while checking specs & reviews.
And some don't bother even reading warnings…well that's their problem

@KangaDrew: If people … don't bother looking at the specs, that's their problem, really.

Really? Did you take your own advice as you expect others to do & read the specs for this product?

            https://www.jbl.com.au/LINK+MUSIC.html

No mention of the power source under:
            Product Description
General Specifications - it's about the music.
Connections - just connections to hear the music, not to power source.

Nothing I or others found in sales spin. Just about the music, style, features & convenience.
Photo of back, if people looked, shows a nondescript black hole - which could be the power connection. (It is, but I can't see if it's for mains connection on my phone screen.)

Only reference to power source is hidden in
            What's in the box?
            1 x Link Music
            1 x Power cable
            - which could be from a source other than mains power, usually refers to mains power. But could be a USB power cable. And having a mains connection doesn't mean no battery.

Can only infer there is no battery - only because it's not mentioned. But no power source is!
Maybe it runs on hot air from these comments?

That lack of product information is why it has generated confusion & debate in these Deals!

And portable devices are just portable - able to be moved around, but aren't necessarily powered by batteries in the device (eg portable aircon, TVs, etc).

            Sometimes specs aren't enough!
That's why I added a few words of advice.
Strange you question about that, without checking the facts.

            • @INFIDEL: Found the power supply specs in a download PDF:
              Power input: 100–240V–50/60Hz

Really should be a basic piece of information easily available to potential buyers.

Considering JBL make a lot of battery powered sound systems, not to explain this one is purely mains powered is a confusing omission.

      • Mains powered, no battery - it's not that much of a warning to complain about.

It helps people understand the product in the Deal, without needing to read the specs & other lots of other information to realise if it's not for them.

So advice like that shouldn't be given in Deals, in case Ozbargainers may be making a mistake others have made? And everyone should learn by their own mistakes, not from others?
They are still free to ignore it!

That would be a waste of this community's knowledge & experience.
That sharing of experience makes this site far more useful than just a whole lot of ads for bargains.
