Got this fridge on boxing day from JBHifi. Went through 3 of them as they all had scratches plus the feet wouldn't stay level. Obviously a problem with the feet in manufacturing. After the third one swapped it for a LG and the delivery guys didn't even need to level the feet. Definitely wouldn't get this… It's like they're all seconds on top of the dodgy feet.

    • were they delivered in their carton? packaged as new?

      • Yeah. Watched the delivery men unpack 3 times outside my house. I'm guessing either they have awful staff packing it in the first place where scratches are being done in the process or more likely these are repackaged after being sent back. Not surprising with the amount I went through. They'll probably just pawn it off to the next customer who buys it.

    • +3

the delivery guys didn't even need to level the feet

That doesn't make the fridge good.

And you don't level the feet, you have the front of the fridge slightly higher so that the door closes.

      • +8

Yes genius but the problem with the Samsung was the left foot on the models wouldn't budge no matter what anyone did to it and it was higher than the right. I didn't say the LG was good because it was level but it shows how bad the Samsung is when other brands don't need to do anything to make it level. Well aware that the front is supposed to be higher for the doors to close easily but it had nothing to do with it.

          • +7

@spaceflight: Do you really want to experience what true level is Morty? DO YOU?!!

            • @Meconium: LAMBS TO THE COSMIC SLAUGHTER!!!!!!

          • +6

            @spaceflight:

That literally has nothing to do with the fridge or manufacturer. It has everything to do with how much the assembly person screwed the feet in.

Who would be an employee of, now let me think, oh yeah - the manufacturer!

          • +9

@spaceflight: Imagine being this upset about someone else's experiences with a fridge.

            • +1

@TWDSC: He's either a Samsung spy or he's got the fridge and defending it. All his comments are making other people trying to feel like it was their fault instead of Samsung's.

            • +1

@TWDSC: I'm not upset at all.
But to try and say a fridge is good because the feet didn't need levelling is stupid.

How is the person assembling the feet going to know what correct amount of turns for your floor is, and how is the person picking the 2 feet to put on the fridge going to know which exact two to pick so that they are level for a random floor of any house in the world?

              • @spaceflight: You still seem upset the next day. I thought you may have slept it off.

                • @TWDSC: Thank you for thinking about me last night and today TWDSC. I'm Touched, Wet, Dreamy, Sexy and Climaxing.

But perhaps you can't read or forgot to put your glasses on?

Let me make it succinct using my last post as a quote.

                  I'm not upset at all.

              @Quantumcat: It is!
              Thank you for noticing <3

My spice rack is in alphabetical order and my clothes rack is in colour groups with the colours sorted alphabetically.

    • you sound like my wife, a pain in the ass….:) there is a adjuster under the fridge for the level, i have it and like it

      • I tried and the delivery guys tried it on all the fridges I received and couldn't get the left to move. It just wobbles from side to side with any movement.

        • -1

3 fridges all with the same problem and all on the same side, seems like a user error.

          • @spaceflight: Yep couldn't agree more. Not a manufacturing error at all. Samsung are perfect we all know that.

    • +1

I have a LG fridge too and it does the job, great value for the buck.

    • Good fridge. But this colour in particular sucks. Looks nothing like the photos in person FYI. The other colours are much better

  • +19

Both JB and TGG are selling used items as brand new. Buy it from them only if you have time to pickup in store!

    • +1

I never know that before, thanks for remindings, this is unbelievable.

        Delivered used product!
        published 3 days ago

I bought brand new vacuum cleaner Roomba i7 Plus via their store and they delivered to me a used one. The packaging was unsealed, the vacuum was very dusty in dirty, it was covered in grass and hair. Horrible! I called the the store and they picked it up and then no answer!!! so, I paid around $2000 and still have no vacuum, after I called again - they said they have no idea what is going on and that my order shows as complete. This is literally the worse ever experience I ever head with any store online or physical! I will never ever buy anything from them ever again! If I do not gat my vacuum within this week - I will have to complain to ombudsman consumer affairs

        • +5

$2000 is a lot of money, this is unreal they doing that.

        • +1

Interesting. Dick Smith got in a lot of trouble for this.

    • +9

      Surely that's just outright illegal.

    • My LG that was the replacement for the awful Samsung was new in box watched them take it off and packed like new with all the tape holding shelves inside etc, but there were a couple little hairs and spots inside the fridge. So I'm guessing it might have been a repackaged job aswell. What the hell is going on here! Do we not have new products anymore. Don't tell me we have to go to Harvey Norman to get legitimate stock…

    • Interesting. I bought a bissell pet pro revolution from tgg and when I opened it (unsealed) there was water in the head of the cleaner. I called them and they said bissell test some of them before selling and it must have been tested.

    • That wouldn't be intentional because it's illegal.

It would likely be because someone returned something that appeared new so was accidentally sold as new

    • Has this actually happened to you? Or are you just digging up other people's stories off the internet and spreading that story?

    • I bought a drone from JB once and it already had photos in the memory card. When I told the manager of the store, he claimed I was joking or making things up lol.

    • +1

Time is one thing, but picking up a fridge in store is a little tough…

      • Sometimes it's worth it to just give a guy off Airtasker $60 to tag along with their ute, mats, straps and trolley. Plenty of people with 5 star ratings quoting for those gigs.

  • +2

Seem that there is quite a bit of problem with this model, Applianceonline has discontinued it and recommended the SR400 instead; reviews online are negative. Maybe that is the reason why JB is discounting on this model.

  • +9

The amount of issues with Samsung fridges I read about I wouldn't touch them.

LG are so much better for not much more, otherwise Westinghouse is a good safe bet.

    • +1

And the Samsung washing machines as well.
Go for LG and buy from Good Guys or Bing Lee for the best result is my experience.

    • Same here. Everything Samsung I've ever owned has shat itself. Have a read on product reviews about the Samsung icemaker. I think there's a class action u der way in the USA by the sounds of it.
      so shit

    • +1

"Westinghouse is a good safe bet"

Couldn't agree more! Has become one of my favourite brands over the years.

      • Only the Aussie made one but sure about Thailand

        • We've got one recently, can't tell the longevity yet but it's certainly fairly quiet.

    • Don’t think Westinghouse have the Australian made ones anymore though. Our Aus made one is still going strong. The Samsung Fridges we got at work were super noisy, don’t rate them.

    • 10 years so far on my current Westinghouse. Previous Westinghouse around 30 years.

    • Our Samsung washing machine had to be recalled due to them not sealing the control board PCB and water reportedly getting on it and frying it.. Samsungs "fix" was to send their guys out to put a plastic bag over the PCB. I had to complain enough about how letting condensation sit on a plastic bag and stink isn't going to be an acceptable fix.

We also got a Samsung fridge at the same time, it's been pretty crap since day 1. Plastic walls inside cracking, shelves breaking under minimal load, child lock button never working, etc.

Will never buy from them again.

  • SR397BTC
    SR400LSTC
Both are same, the 400 model is samsung’s attempt to iron out 397’s flaws which is essentially a badly engineered product with complaints about bad sheet metal, compressor, frost formation, feet and what not. Kind of like 400 is the ‘s’ version of 397.
Thats why you will find both or either of these mostly on discount depending on the store and occasion(boxing day, cyber Monday etc). 397 does look beautiful and attractive though.

    • I didn't even want to get a Samsung because of their issues but it was the only decent fridge on special. Plus the manager of the store had one himself and talked me into it. It's probably the best looking finish I've seen in a fridge but what's the point if it doesn't work. Kind of Samsung in a nutshell. Best looks and marketing but their products always have issues. Got told by a salesman at the Good Guys early last year that their most returned item is a Samsung washing machine.

      • +9

The manager had one himself - classic sales 101. Almost certainly he did not.

        • I was the one who asked about the fridge. As I knew about Samsung's reputation. I was looking at a much more expensive LG that was just under $1000. Which he obviously wanted to sell to me. Said he used the Samsung as a second fridge and it had no issues.

        • +3

If you dont buy I will!

    • +2

I have the SR400 and its garbage ! compressor rattles all the time and it makes a gurgling noise from the back of it as the drip tray is always full of water

  • +11

I own this fridge. It gurgles loudly, constantly and the inverter or whatever is humming away seems to run almost non stop. Wouldn't recommend.

    • +2

I have the smaller one and on top of everything you listed, everything in the freezer is too frosty :( all my bread gets soggy. Do you have the same problem?

      • -5

Freezing bread makes it stale …

        • +8

No, it preserves it for a while (obviously not forever). But it will last a lot longer there than in the fridge or pantry.

        • +2

You’re thinking of refrigerating, that makes bread stale quicker than on the shelf.

        • +3

If your freezer makes bread "stale", you need to get a new freezer.

        • Freezing bread makes it stale …

F**king hell, another priceless quote from OzBargain's resident lobotomy patient, ladies and gentlemen…

    • -3

Are you sure the humming sound isn't the fan to keep the air circulated?

  • +1

    Glad I read the comments!

  • I ordered one earlier, might cancel it after reading all the comments. Any recommendations for another 400L fridge within this price range?

    • +2

Let me have a look bro, I will let you know, indeed I need one as well

      • +1

Thanks, looking forward to your new bargain!

        • Pleasure :)

    • -1

I got this fridge swapped for the LG 427 Litre one. They did it at staff cost because of the trouble. I think that fridge goes on special for about $650ish. Normal price is about $800 though. The rest of the range isn't great for that size compared with the price. Who knows you might get one of my send backs :)
Edit*Checked the LG and it's $850 normal. On sale now for $798

  • It seems like normal price for LG 427 is $795 include delivery. Maybe can check your local store, I ordered from Appliance Giant which include delivery and installation. Save the hassle for price beat and asking for free delivery from JB HI-FI.

  • +4

    Dont buy this fridge.
Its soooo noisy. When the motor was running it would cause the egg shelf to bounce around.

The rubber mount they use is so hard it doesn't absorb any of the vibrations.
I ended up taking it back and got a Mitsubishi fridge instead.

  • +4

Sorry cannot recommend Samsung white goods, last year had a washer died, and last month had a fridge died, both due to failed converter. I was able to get Samsung to repair the washer but still budging with them on the fridge.

    • +2

But this is clearly Samsung black goods

    • Perhaps the older Samsung appliances were fine as we’ve had our Samsung fridge for more than 10yrs. It’s still operating nicely (touch wood).

Ps. Why is this thread getting so many upvotes when the fridge is supposedly problematic?

  • +4

no jv pls! lol this should be a meme

    • It’s pronounced meme

      • +2

It's just annoying seeing him poping up everywhere for trolling,

  • +3

Thanks for all the comments. It somewhat explains why after unpacking my brand new Bosch 10kg washing machine purchased from TGG, I noticed it had water in it and looked slightly used. It was my first new washer purchase so I thought it was normal, and may have been condensation.

Or maybe I'm just overthinking things now.

    • +1

Purchased a Bosch washing machine last year (brand new and sealed). Had the same issue. Confirmed by TGG that Bosch tests all machines prior to distribution (which explains the water). I recall reading something on the Bosch website which confirmed this.

      • Also possibly to prime the pumps.

        • They don't need to prime the pump in a washing machine. The inlet is pressurised by the mains water and the outlet is pressurised by the height difference between the drum and the outlet pump (which sits at the bottom).

      • I got a Bosch washing machine delivered last week (with all packaging intact) from appliances online. Absolutely no water or signs of use.

  • Interesting to read the comments on this thread about Samsung products, i thought they were a quality product

I was about to buy the following $1500 fridge but am now having second thoughts. Are all Samsung fridges dodgy, or just the 'cheaper' ones?

    https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/samsung-455l-bottom-mount-ref…

And really poor form for them to sell used goods as new! I had a list of things i was going to purchase from them and get delivered, because they only charged like $70 delivery + unpackaging. I may have to re-think this approach now, i really cbf going through the whole return process.

    • +1

I bought the Samsung SRL451BLS about 12 months ago and am very happy with it. No issues, no excessive noise, good interior layout.
Purchased from JB Commercial, including delivery and was a new item.

    • There are so many models by every brand nowadays it's a quality spectrum. These cheaper discounted ones are the ones you have to look out for generally, and the ones which keep their value are going to be the ones which last.

      • -1

        "Keep their value"?

Didnt know fridges were like iphones which people bought and sold after a few years…

        • I bought a fridge on special 2 years ago and kept checking the price every month and it never went down. Very lucky impulse buy because I usually spend weeks researching

        • you must know it is easier to meet a second hand fridge seller at a public place with a fridge that he or she can drag along but with phones, it is difficult, you almost must go to the seller's house to see the second hand phone, and you know what - some never came home after, so it is safer to buy second hand fridges than phones, and meet the seller in a public place like a westfield and make sure you check the fridge at westfields before handing the money.

          • @paloverde88: I raise your fridge with a full length dining table + chairs in public!

  • +1

Sheer curiosity - why are there still top mount fridges? Is it easier to manufacture or makes it more reliable if the freezer is on the top?

Like with top loader washing machines; some people say it's easier to load them, some think they can fit in more laundry, but IRL they are inferior at washing and waste water, compared to front loaders.

So, why would people want to have freezer at the eye level, and bend down for everything else?

    • +5

top-mount are the most energy efficient and cheaper to produce.

    • +4

In fridge freezers the coolant expansion (the process that actually does the cooling) happens in/around the freezer compartment. The fridge uses "second hand" cooled air from the freezer. With bottom mount fridges (freezer at the bottom) you have to move the cold air from the bottom up to the top, usually by a small fan that runs quite a lot of the time. With top mount fridges the cold air will naturally fall into the lower compartment. It's often assisted by a fan but it needs to run far less often and is generally smaller.

      • -3

This has a coil in both fridge and freezer, so what exactly are you talking about?
