ViewSonic 24" FHD 144Hz TN FreeSync Gaming Monitor (VX2458-P-MHD) $169 + Delivery ($0 C&C) @ Umart

110

Trigger warning for the haters: yes, it's a TN panel!

However, at this price point you won't do a lot better for anyone looking for a cheap entry point into competitive PC gaming.

Grabbed one of these before xmas for the older kiddo who among other games has been getting into twitchy shooters like CS:GO. It really is a snappy panel.

Yes the colours and viewing angles aren't quite up to scratch with an IPS panel (e.g. his younger brother's Acer EG0 24"), but nor are they terrible by any stretch!

TN panels have come a long way IMO, anyone with reservations should definitely give them a look if all you're going on is conventional wisdom of TN = bad.

Edit: looks like Umart have extended the deal, post adjusted accordingly.

  • TN panels are great for PC gaming, love the blacks.

uh, blacks are not great on a TN panel, they have good motion tho, VA has good blacks but are bad at motion.

      • True, though some TN panels handle dark scenes better than some IPS, particularly in dimly lit rooms, due to the absence of IPS glow. Black uniformity varies a lot between panels though.

I'll try to get some photos of black uniformity on this panel when I get home tonight in case that helps anyone.

      • When it comes to blacks, generally: VA >> TN > IPS.

With motion, generally: TN >> IPS > VA

But when the panel is properly tuned: TN > VA >> IPS

  • Thank you!

This is arguably class-leading for motion at this resolution and refresh rate. In terms of total response times (a way harsher metric than average g2g), this goes close to 100%.

It's a model from 2018, but I don't think anything else has really improved upon it. There's a similar model from Dell in the form of the S2421HGF which has a sleeker look, and well-regarded configurability in terms of colours and contrast, but I believe its panel (different model) is marginally poorer in its tuning for motion. That's about $215 delivered on eBay while the Dell code remains active.

This is great value for gaming in the current market.

  • Would this be good for a second monitor? I'm planning to have a vertically mounted monitor setup (monitor on top of main). It's a TN panel, so I was wondering if it would have a good enough viewing angle to use.

      No. Just no.

    • Were it on the side of your existing monitor I would say sure why not, but viewing angles on TN panels are particularly bad from below the monitor, like really bad - check some of the vertical viewing angle vids on rtings.com to see what I mean.

      • ok thanks! I'll have a look now.
