I think it's rediculous that I need a working Facebook account to use this device. I've heard horror stories as well, that someone sets up a FB account just for this, doesn't use it, and then facebook blocks them out.

    • +20

I'm concerned because I don't use Facebook at all. So if I reactivate my super old account that I don't use any more and use it for Quest, do they lock me out because I refuse to use it?

I will never purchase an item that tethers me to cancer like this does.

      • they detect and delete dummy accounts, especially with fake names.

    • Cant you just create a fake account?

      • +11

You can but it links to your device. Just create an account with your real name and set all the privacy to only you can see.

        • +9

Just worth noting that it is against Facebook policy to have more than one account so if you already have a personal account on the platform you can't create a dedicated Oculus account.

Facebook is a community where people use their authentic identities. It's against the Facebook Community Standards to maintain more than one personal account.

          • +1

@eecan: Oh yeah only have the 1 haha for market place and quest

        • +12

I tried this with my real name - never had a account in past. Locked down security settings, didn't want to add any friends. Account was blocked within a week. Appealed the ban, account active for a day, then blocked completely. Tried a new account with my other email. Wouldn't let me create account on any PC or phone. Tried different internet connection, VPN, remote PC etc. Could not create an account. Wondering how much information FB has on me after that 1 week to stop me creating a new account so many ways!

          • +5

@frugalferret: I had a similar experience. I even tried a new device and a new email address, and it still knows who I am.

          • +3

@frugalferret: Some more examples are listed here. It's ridiculous. Great hardware, terrible account policies.

      • +9

I understand FB knows if it is fake by the lack of friends, likes, groups etc. It'll be at risk of getting soft bricked.

        • +3

I got told by support, it more chance with fake names.

How ever if you do get flagged, you send a copy of your ID and they unlock it. ( been a few months for me so far and all good)

        • I don’t know how they can do this. It’s not fake, just single-purpose.

I’m interested in getting a Quest, but I don’t use Facebook and don’t plan to start to. I’d definitely have zero friends and zero non-VR activity.

        • +2

Thats weird though, I have had a second fake account with only 1 friend (myself) since 10 years ago, and it was never blocked.

          • +1

@liongalahad: Account age is probably a factor too then.

          • +2

@liongalahad: Older accounts tend to be ignored most of the time, though there are occasional cases of old accounts being flagged for identity verification and needing to provide government- or university-issued photo ID to get the account reactivated.

      • +8

Cant you just create a fake account?

That's how all the people complaining online got banned.

      • +2

Accounts that are older than a year or whatever the time period is, will actually not be flagged at all. Since this rule came into effect any new accounts seem to be given a very close inspection for accuracy and activities.

With the anti-trust that was found against Facebook in regards to this it might be changing… but that would take time.

      • +5

They have an awful lot of smarts to detect fake accounts. It's quite scary. I don't use social media at all and when I reluctantly created a facebook account for my oculus they terminated it before I could even finish the process.

I used my real details but maybe because I have no online presence the algorithm assumed I was fake. There is no way to contact facebook to deal with this.

I had to go through oculus support. They were helpful but admitted they were at the mercy of facebook themselves. Eventually they unlocked my account & I can use my oculus but it was an awful lot of hassle.

The only consolation is that it cost facebook a lot of their support staff's time in dealing with the case. Much to-ing and fro-ing via tickets.

        • +1

sounds like as if it's not worth your time and stress buying an oculus when there are alternatives

    • +7

I think it's rediculous that I need a working Facebook account to use this device.

It is ridiculous, and by far the biggest worry with this device.

But this is also the best VR kit available under $1500 AUD, and it is amazing.

It costs less than a PS5 or XSX. And it gives way more of that "wow" factor we used to get from buying a new console a decade or two ago.

If you can live with having a Facebook account, go for it.

      • I'm curious about something. Can you try downloading your Facebook data and see if you can find the data they collected from you through oculus? I know what's app data isn't on it, so I don't expect much, but I'm still curious.

      • The issue is not in the creating Facebook account.

Its in Facebook can ban your account at any time and your occulus will just became a very expensive paperweight, and you will lose your current facebook account as well.
There are so many story about this already.

Hardware should not tied to account, and if its tied it should not prevent access to your hardware.
I can create miliion PS account no problem, use it on my PS however i want and still have access to my PS forever, the same applied to iPhone, Android phone, switch, xbox.

    • +3

yeah FB has grown too big these days - see how they acted with Aus News - its only the beginning
not to be one of those tin foil hat ppl but if ppl will still use FB and keep uploading their lives to it after the whole fiasco they had selling ppls privacy and shit then off course they can set whatever terms they want as no one cares

and the fact they know which accounts are fake and ban ppl - scary

      • -8

ppl will still use FB and keep uploading their lives to it after the whole fiasco they had selling ppls privacy and shit then off course they can set whatever terms they want as no one cares

Real people I know who use Facebook excepts no privacy from them. Its not just Facebook but internet overall including ozbargain.

yeah FB Ozbargain has grown too big these days - see how they acted with Aus News - its only the beginning

      • +26

I'd just like to add while Facebook is indeed an awful company and tech giants have gained too much power, they were on the right side of that news debacle.

The Murdoch Media have been lobbying for this for a decade now, they own the vast vast majority of Australian news and many of the largest news outlets in the UK, US, much of Asia, and even in Canada through proxies. This is only being done because the Australian Liberal party are repeatedly handed elections by Newscorp and this strengthens Murdoch's choke on the media. 90% of Australian news being shared on Facebook will be Murdoch-owned, and now Facebook has to pay Newscorp for third parties posting on their platform. We're not talking about struggling independent media here, this just hurts them even more.

This is not how you deal with tech giants, the enemy of your enemy is not your friend.

          • +8

@botchie: Those "news" companies get free traffic to their websites. It's greed imo.

    • -1

Bugged me at first as I don’t use fb except for marketplace. It hasn’t bothered me after that though as your purchases are tied to your account in oculus store and is quite convenient.

For me the whole purpose of getting a fully contained unit like quest 2 is so that the experience can be wireless.

    • +3

I've hooked up my Oculus quest 2 without Facebook. Essentially, you'll just need an existing Occulus Account (you can get a developer's account for free) and an old Oculus Quest APK for Android (not sure about iOS. I don't have one. I've only used it on Android). But really all you need to do is connect your Oculus Quest 2 to the app and everything else can be done via the quest 2 itself, including updates and games purchase.

      • Thanks for this. Sounds like a good workaround.

    • -4

Just like xbox needs a microsoft account.. playstation needs a sony account…

      • +1

        The main differences are:

        1. Microsoft and Sony have a substantially higher bar for banning people. Facebook['s AI] can ban you for failing to use your legal name, for creating more than one account, for posting a picture of controllers, or for seemingly no reason at all. Getting in touch with human support to resolve even obvious mistakes can be difficult to impossible.

        2. An Xbox account issue or ban doesn't mean your real-life identity is banned for life from using Microsoft hardware or software (e.g. Windows) if you're unable to get it sorted out. You can just create a new account.

(Also, excluding the new digital-only options, Xbox and Playstation actually can be used without signing up for an account. Quest can't even get to the home screen without a Facebook account in good standing.)

      • +2

They don't ban people for not being social. If you get banned for anything it will be because of multiplayer bad behavior.

They don't assume your account is fake because you don't do anything on it, and then close the account and lock you out of your hardware.

The accounts themselves don't serve any purpose outside of gaming.

        Bad analogy.

        • Not true, I got a Facebook ban for not adding any friends.

          • +1

@cc23: I was referring to PSN/XBL, not Facebook.

    • I had to get them to manually remove my fb account from my oculus when my fb account was shut down for ‘not following community standards’ I think it was because I had added no friends.

      • I think they should get sued for this. It's one thing to require you to use a Facebook account to access your Quest, but to mandate that you actually use the FB account and add friends, post photos, and comment on other people's posts just to continue to play your Quest is ridiculous. If you don't have any friends (not illegal as far as I know), your account gets deleted and you can't play the purchased Quest games linked to that account?

  • +4

Pity it's white, i like my tech black.

    • +55

For what it's worth, you can't see it while you're using it lol

      • -7

        Same goes for my women.

    • Plenty of fancy/funny skins available for them.

  • +4

The base model was $400-$420 up until yesterday, and now there's suddenly a 4% cashback on the Video Games category for Amazon. ;)

    • -5

      No it wasn't.

    • +1

@jasswolf FWIW, what you are seeing might be exchange rate fluctuations as this is US Amazon stock. Couple of days ago, the rate was 0.80, now 0.78.
If you look at Camex3 for the US Amazon, the price has been static https://camelcamelcamel.com/product/B08F7PTF53, this deal is sweetened when the AUD go up, plus the rare 4% SB or CR cash back on video games.

      • -3

It's a bit more than that, likely fluctuating logistics costs.

    • -7

I literally linked this to my mate last night at $421. I HATE price jacking.

      • +1

No price jacking by Amazon US https://camelcamelcamel.com/product/B08F7PTF53

      • -1

It does appear I was mistaken. It is just a coincidence that the price increased almost the exact amount as the cashback reward at the the exact time. I hope you forgive my jumping to conclusions.

This remains not a deal though. You have been able to buy via Amazon US since Jan at a cheaper price, and this is jumped in price $13 from yesterday.

Given that this is clearly just the standard price as per CCC below (accounting for exchange rate), posting this now is the equivalent of posting every single gaming/electronic item as an individual deal.

  • Anyone got experience using the virtual desktop? How's the lag factor? Looking to swap over from my Samsung Odyssey Plus - I barely use it due to the wires.

    • +1

I've seen plenty of youtube videos of people using it with no issues.

I do get stutters when everyone in the family is using the wifi, but my wifi router is old and was like $50, so a decent Wifi 6 setup might fix it.

What games do you need to move so much that the wires are a problem?

      • Cheers. I have viveport infinity so I tend to try everything. I don't like the idea of the wires being a problem in the back of my head, trippping over them and taking my laptop with me. I have to move my laptop everytime I use VR so it would be great if I could use VR without moving it.

    • +1

I don't have a quest but there are free alternatives like ALVR and immersedvr. I can't comment on how well they work though.

    • +3

It's the best wireless VR experience I've ever had.. and even better now that Virtual Desktop is supported natively.. no more sideloading required.

I have a separate 5Ghz network setup for it and its perfect (not even Wifi 6)

Beat Saber even works great wirelessly.. but you might need to purchase the native quest version for the super expert levels

    • +9

I have this (bought at launch) and use virtual desktop. It's great, I also have my 5g AZ router right next to me and connected to the desktop by cable. I've played HL Alyx without lag, and watched a lot of "Linux ISOs"

    • +3

I have the default Telstra NBN wireless modem router, and I am yet to notice any lag.

I have mostly played Half-Life Alyx using the Quest 2 in PCVR wirelessly and still no lag.

      • Thanks. Is your PC plugged into the modem or connected via wifi?

        • +2

You would ideally hard wire your PC to your router.. to try and minimise lag

        • +2

I have it plugged directly into the modem through another switch. I am yet to test both running wirelessly, since I have the infrastructure to run my PC wired.

My PC is capable of running wifi 6 though, so if I do ever have to go the wireless route, I might look at adding a dedicated wifi 6 router.

The other great thing about the Quest not requiring to be tethered to the PC, is I can have my PC running in my office at the other end of the house, and use the large space in my rumpus to play with my Quest. Also avoids the awkward situation of punching something expensive.

    • +1

If you have an AMD GPU you can also stream VR using AMD Relive, which seems to be better at the 100mbps setting than VD. If you have Nvidia though I'd stick to VD. You'll just need a 5ghz-capable router/modem with a gigabit LAN port. You can either
      a) Directly connect your PC to your modem via ethernet cable, however you'll want to be playing closeby to your modem or
      b) Have a dedicated router directly connected to just your PC for the best results, no physical connection to your main modem required.

I personally use a dedicated router, and so far the experience has been near-flawless. Visual quality and input lag is the same as using the Oculus Link cable imo. Very occasionally I will experience some audio stutters after a couple of hours of gameplay, but that usually just requires leaving and re-entering your VR placespace.

    • +1

It's great. I'm using it with a Unifi AC-Pro. Don't use it for really time sensitive games (Beat Saber etc) but lag isn't noticeable to me. Now the official app from Oculus store will work with PCVR too without the need to patch via Sidequest.

BTW, it's cheaper to buy from Oculus store Canada. VPN Canada worked for Android, get the Oculus app set up with your favourite fee free payment method, load up the page for the app you want then start the VPN and refresh the page and price will be in CAD.

I haven't tried the free alternative ALVR but I've heard it's gotten much better these days.

  • Whats the difference with the International Version?

  • +11

I really want one of these but won’t while having a Facebook account is mandatory.

    • +1

what is the consequence of it being linked to Facebook? I already have an account that I barely post anything of.
What about using the quest will they gain data on that would be concerning?

      • +1

For the average normal person who isn't on the "facebook is evil, overblown facebook linking train"

        None what so ever

        • +5

See discussion underneath the first comment. Recently went through a similar thing with eBay - being blocked by a Big Tech's algorithm can be very practical and scary in its impacts on an individual, not just some theoretical privacy issue.

        • trusting FB with your privacy is like trusting Bill Clinton with the white house internship program.

      • +6

Reportedly, Facebook has a tendency to block accounts that don’t have any activity other than via the Oculus Quest.

Then you have to jump through hoops to get your account reactivated. Meanwhile you can’t actually use your headset.

For those of us who don’t use Facebook, it sounds risky.

  • +1

I really like my oculus quest 2. No complains.

  • How much would the best 10 games set you back on this and are there ways of getting game price down (i.e Facebook gift card sales etc)?

    • +2

Well the best game as far as I've tried is Half Life Alyx and that requires a desktop to stream it (but it really is amazing)

    • +3

Generally the best games are: Beat Saber, Superhot, Pistol Whip, Synth Riders, Thrill of the Fight, Eleven Table Tennis to name a few. Go to https://www.oculus.com/experiences/quest/ to check those games out and look at the prices. Sales are every so often coinciding with annual events like Christmas sales, Black Friday, etc.

      • +5

Thats a pretty disappointing list of VR games for "best games" (besides beat saber and superhot)

I guess you need to connect the PC Link cable to experience the actual best games

        • +3

This is true. The best VR games require tethering to a PC.

      • +1

        Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners

      • You can keep track of the sales here:

https://old.reddit.com/r/OculusQuestStore/ (Games install and work natively)
        https://old.reddit.com/r/OculusStore/ (Requires PC)

Some, but not all, games offer crossbuy (buy once, get both the PC and the Quest-native version)

        • -1

          How hard to pirate games?

        • Canadian Store usually cheaper.

      • Depends what sort of games you want. If you like adventure and puzzle games, checkout I Expect You To Die, The Room VR, Accounting Plus, Virtual Virtual Reality and if you like actual puzzles then Puzzling Places, currently in beta and free on App Lab and is really good as far as VR puzzles go.

  • People commenting on using virtual desktop, does the actual graphics card in the laptop play a part? I am trying it on my standard laptop and getting hardware not supported messages

    • +3

Yes, you would generally need an AMD or Nvidia GPU for hardware acceleration.

      • Thanks mate. So if my standard laptop is not enough then the virtual one has no chance. Thanks- you saved me half a day of mucking around setting up virtual desktop.

        • You can get a refund if you use it less than 2 hours.

          • @Bob Lou: I applied for refund but status is still “refund requested”

  • +7

Just a tip for anyone considering purchasing this - I'd 100% recommend getting a replacement head strap and face cover as well as maybe some knuckle grips. The stock heatstrap is pretty awful, it puts all the weight at the front of your head, is difficult to adjust, and just isn't that comfortable overall. You also experience a bit of general discomfort and light bleed without a face cover.

Aliexpress or ebay will sell the headstrap for $20-35 and a latex/foam facecover for $5-15. Knuckle straps are like $5 and worth it too imo.

It seriously makes the experience a lot more immersive and enjoyable, trust me.

    • 100% agree. I bought the halo strap (listed under the GOMVR store) and 3D printed an external battery pack holder to hang a Blitzwolf 10,000mAh pack off the back for balance. Much comfort to be had.

  • I find its not user friendly enough or at all to people who need glasses, is it my mishandling?

    • I had no issue using it while wearing glasses. Had it on for a bit over an hour when trying it out at a friend's place

    • Not every glasses frame would fit inside, but you have an option to use a spacer (included) and/or order VR lens with your prescription (though you might find them a bit pricey).

  • So with the 256gb at $580 plus 10 games at average $30ea, then I be looking at about $900

Plus if I wanted to link to PC then that going to cost more for a good pc.

Might be a buy-n-flip deal use it for couple months and sell on Gumtree but then can't sell games with it.

Would like to buy to experience VR but maybe PSvr might be more money wise purchase (in terms of money invested in platform if already own ps5).

    • Main problem being that they only just announced the PSVR 2. So going by the PS5 release, by the time it's available and actually in stock anywhere it'll be 2022 and the rumoured Oculus Quest Pro will be out.

For $450 delivered on the 64GB will hold any current game (and several of them, largest title on the Oculus store is 8GB), there's no need to have all 10 installed at once.

My only problem is that GPU prices are attrocious right now thanks to bitcoin. I'd really want a 2070 to go with this to play HL Alyx.
