whats better this or smart office?

    • +3

I would say Kingsoft office, the reviews for smart office aren't that positive and the price is $4.60, free is always better :)

I've just installed Kingsoft office (onto an Acer iconia a501 tablet) and it seems pretty good, possibly not as smooth as it could be, but it seems to have a lot of the features of MS office (2007/2010) as well as a similar layout/colour scheme.

    • This, as it's free :)

Actually I thought Kingsoft Office was free for quite a while — it was in beta for the most part of the year and it was free to use.

      • Judging by its download stats, it's only been free for a few days. :)

        • I know it definitely wasn't free on Wednesday night.

      • "Kingsoft Office Team had decided that Kingsoft Office for Android is free starting from 14th Dec 2011." from above link. If you bought it - they will refund & give bonus app & 1 year support!

yeah smartoffice is also free from getjar.

oh well now i have both :)

To be honest, none of them are that great, but there aren't really any great Office apps for Android (or iOS for that matter), so this is better than nothing. Plus, it's free ;)

This is probably the safer one of the two, if you do not have email configured.

Why? Smart Office reads the phone state, which effectively tells them which numbers are calling in and out. Which is a form of Spyware, however, if you press allow, then by default it is not malware per se as you have given it permission.

I think smart office also takes your phone number and IMEI and sends it off to their servers… (This is what permission to read the phone state allows)

The other pro for kingsoft is the smaller file size.

EDIT: Smart Office also sends your phone identity. (Just checked it)

Kingsoft is the first app that I've seen posted on ozbargain that is actually a bargain.

Again it depends on your setup, but I doubt many people have email setup, e.g. android Gmail. Or do they?

Battery booster is just a scam for the developer to earn money from advertisements and is a placebo. As for the camera one, I am still analysing it.

      • Thx for explaining the permissions so well

    Thanks. Good software for android

  • My SG S2 has Polaris office already installed, which I cannot find in Android market. Shall I install this one too?

    • +2

Why not? None of these apps has support for all the features of the Office suite. Hence, it's good to have a few around so that you have back ups if one does not work.
After all, you can always uninstall it if you find that it doesn't meet your needs.

      • Thanks.

got QuickOffice pro, OfficeSuite pro and DocumentsToGo all free from amazon app of the day…i guess i should add this one too, aha!

i haven't used any of them extensively enough to test which is better. i should try them all, but i just keep using OfficeSuite Pro cause it's comes up at the top of the list!

  • Anyone know if I can download it before I get an android device?

    • Signup to AppBrain and add the app to your list.

sigh .. i got ripped off .. i downloaded smart-office for $0.10 when Android had their celebration sale. Now this ones for free .. NOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo !!

Great, just when my amazon appstore stopped working!

    • Are you getting the "authorising"/"not available in your region" error?

Use the instructions for orbot from xda linked in the comments here:
      www.ozbargain.com.au/node/60001

      works perfect.

      • Cool, I'll try the solution for unrooted mobiles. Thanks!

  • Wow, this "gotta catch em all" of the free Android office suites is getting extreme. I think there's 5 installed now. Maybe it's culling time?

    P.S. Cheers OP!

  • Thanks. Got one :-D

  • I downloaded, however I always thought office suits apps are difficult to use on phones and tablets

  • Can anyone comment on how this compares to Polaris?

    • I also had the same question earlier. As the polaris come installed with the samsung, it might be the light version. I tried polaris for the first time on my mobile and it asked like for registration and I closed it.

Free is free :D installed on everything lol

  • Haha, I read this as Microsoft Office and for a moment there was wondering why Microsoft would develop Office for Android.

Anyway, it looks good and I'm sure it will definitely come in handy for me somewhere down the track. Thanks for posting!

MS are going to release Office for iPad in 2012 apparently. So maybe a version for Android cannot be ruled out either. It would be a cash cow for them.

      • They've also had Office for Mac for years, and are working on Office for Symbian (yes, Symbian still exists… who knew), due out in the first half of 2012.

So I'm remaining hopeful for an Android version of Office.

I do so love an office app that requires internet access.

  • Kingsoft doesn't support pdf files. QuickOffice pro does. Would smartoffice open .pdf ?

  • Great bargain, many thanks!!

  • Thanks OP. 4th office app!! :D
