Went to Big W today and saw 25% off all Brita Jugs and filters. This looked like the deal of the bunch.
It can be self installed, no plumbing necessary.

  • Can the wife install it?

    • +11

she will if she knows what's good for her.

    • I wouldn't let mine, but go for it.

I just strain creek water through my wife beater into a billy like a real man

  • Beat it by 10% at Bunnings

Shoot me down for not comparing like for like, but a water filter with tap can be bought for MUCH cheaper from a Hardware store or cheaper again online (ie eBay).
If you like buying branded, then the Brita might be a way to go, but check up on pricing and availability of filter refills. I wouldn't be surprised if the Brita system uses non-standard size refills, to force you into buying their branded (and higher priced) refills rather than a competitors refill.

    • OP might want more guaranteed warranty, unlike eBay.

    • That better options exist doesn't make this a bad deal, especially since you admit you're not comparing like items. Surely you could point out the alternative without the neg.

In my opinion, a deal is not a deal if there is something cheaper that will do the job better. Whilst I'm all for acknowledging that in many cases Brand Name can make a huge difference in quality/effectiveness, I don't believe this is one of those occasions.
I would never recommend this deal to any of my friends because I know that for $100 less you can get a dual filter system (as opposed to this single filter system) using industry standard parts that will supply nicer water, at a cheaper price (upfront and even more so over time).
If I can't recommend it to my friends, I can't recommend it to my associates here.

  • how the hell do we install it?

    • watch the attached video on the page, it seems pretty basic I think, shouldnt take over 1hr.

I bought the dual filter from esold for $79 and installed myself. Works great! Why spend $200+ for the same thing?

  • +2

I think this is way too $$ for 1 filter system. NOT A BARGAIN!

Do not buy! Expensive non-standard replacement cartridge - $80 vs $15 at bunnings for a standard 10" carbon filter.
Get a 2-stage system for less money.

p.s. any undersink filkter can be DIY installed, but none of them legally in Australia. Fortunately nobody gives a toss.

    • Whoah!
Looks like the recommended replacement cycle is only 180 days too (as per the video displaying 180 days when the digital timer is started), so you'd need 2 per year as opposed to one every 12 months!

    • What 2 stage system are you recommending?

  • I personally prefer chilled tap water (Sydney). Total cost: $0.0000001

    • Yeah got to agree. If it actually chilled the water then I would consider it but being its just filtering I'm happy with my tap.

  • Heaps of good ones here (I'm sure there are other sites). Ceramic tap is good to have. If you have questionable mains water these are really nice.
