seems to come down to this price once a month recently… but still seems like a good monitor… might get two in next months sale, though still not sure about the extra grunt required to run two of these… I still like 1080P as movies dont need to be scaled for it.

note this is a 16:10 not a 16:9 which many people like

I think this sucker is eIPS btw. 6bits per colour rather than 8, though you get nicer viewing angles than TN.

  • Awesome, maybe ill grab another one.

  • 8ms grey-to-grey is a bit of a deal-breaker; otherwise, very nice. I like the 16:10 ratio.

    • Actually, the 8ms on this monitor should be perfectly ok for most people (for gaming), although many vendors tend to hype some of these figures (i.e. 2 ms response times on monitors, 1ms response times on keyboards etc., all of which are way above normal human response times).

"A worst-case response time of <16ms is sufficient for video gaming, and the difference between response times once below 10ms begin to become hard to perceive due to limitations of the human eye. [5] [6]"
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Response_time_(technology)#cite_note-4

It wasn't clear to me from the above whether there can be exceptional people with unusually low response times, but for most people, it should be fine.

    • For gaming the 8 ms response time is fine as it has a quick input lag.
      http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/content/dell_u2412m.htm#…

However the 23 inch model performs very well in input lag, is 1080p so good for consoles, and may have been better value at $188 previously.

  • If it had HDMI I'd be $279 poorer

    • not sure if you can do 1200 lines over HDMI (1.3) I think the limit is 1080

      • thought it depended which version, regardless there are HDMI to display port adaptors. got one for my laptop.

      • +1

From a quick forum scan it seems that problem is usually a limitation of the HDMI port on the monitor. It can be fixed by using a HDMI -> DVI converter and going in via the DVI port on the monitor.

      • According to wikipedia, v1.0 of HDMI supports 1920x1200 and v1.3 supports 2560x1600, with v1.4 extending that to 4K x 2K resolutions.
        http://superuser.com/questions/119755/hdmi-with-resolution-2…

        • But of course we all really know that Display Port is for PC's and HDMI for TV's.

        • I wish Display Port was more widespread, i find it to be a much better over HDMI.

  • its a must for photography/photoshops

  • I bought one of these during one of the earlier price drops, upgraded from a 23" 1080p Philips TN panel. Very very happy with it, the extra Vres is noticable, and the adjustable Dell stand is excellent.

  • Just bought one for work. Thanks.

  • Thanks. Have been waiting for this to come around again. Couldn't resist this time.

Dell Outlet also has some good deals.

    • DELL Ultrasharp U2211H 21.5" : $149
    • Dell (TM) UltraSharp U2410 : $499
    • I'd love to be able to do a side by side with the UltraSharp U2410 and U2412M to see if the colour calibration and wider gamut are noticeable.

      • And it would not just be comparing IPS to eIPS, but also LED to CFL. Use of LED back lighting is at the sacrifice of a good percentage of colour gamut. This is why the superseded U2311H was so good, and still is better than the U2312M, the 23 inch version of the model in this post.

      • here's a little review of the monitor, with a little comparison between the U2410 and U2412M

edit: lol, someone already posted it somewhere above, must have missed it

    • zzz double post

  • is this good for gaming?

    • -3

      no

      • why not?

    • +1

I like the 16:10 ratio for RPG style games as you get more screen space, so your toolbars and info don't clutter the main area as much.

I'm not a hardcore gamer, but I have played crysis 2, BF3 and CS source with nothing to complain about.

Once again the 16:10 is also nice for FPS games as you have a wider field of view vertically.

If there are any hardcore gamers that could give a more in depth opinion, that would be great.

Hopefully we can get some informative response not just yes/no with little supporting argument.

      • Not correct, 16x9 has more visual than 16x10 on FPS games. Since these games are made by scale of 16x9, thus 16x10 and 4x3 lose a bit landscape view.

        • +1

erm i dont think they make the game in any ratio, its basically just what the monitor will fit…?

        • Games aren't made in raitos….
16:10 will give you more visuals vertically which is good for RTS
16:9 will give you more visuals horizontally (peripherals)
Not too sure which ratio would be better for racing games though, probably 16:9 for the wider field of vision, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

        • @Trance, your wrong, racing games are better on 3 monitors…

          that is all.

        • +1

With modern games the FOV setting controls your vertical field of view. The horizontal FOV is then derived from that value and the aspect ratio. So 16:9 will give you a wider FOV in modern games.

That being said, I have a 16:10 1920x1200 24" and a 16:9 2560x1440 27". Before I got the 27" the 24" was my main screen and the extra real estate was nice. On the 27" there's a heap anyway so it doesn't really matter. But on smaller screens, 16:10 is nice for desktop usage.

        • @wisc
True but not everyone is rich enough to have 3 screens :P

          That being said I'm on a 2560x1440 27" lol
          @Domingo
Can't agree with you more, the ratio doesn't matter that much once you step up into ultra high res of 27"+, on smaller 24" or less screens 16:10 was the sweet spot IMHO.

        • to who doesnt believe the game has a best/native screen ratio 16x9, here's screen comparison

        • @cloud, what are you talking about man! the screenshots clearly show the eyefinity is best!

    wish dell would bring

    16:9 24"

For a movie and tv watcher, I don't like the extra black bar on 16:9 shows..

    also no hdmi is shit

    • +2

      just get an adaptor…

    • +1

You can cover the bars and make it 16:9.

Just added two to my shopping cart and it looks like the offer is limited to 2 per customer instead of only one! This is different to the previous deals which have only been 1 per customer which sucks if you're trying to get two of the exact same panels :)

The special offer details (at least for the U2412M) are "Get $120 Cash Off (Limited to 2 units per customer - Ends Thurs, January 05)!"

    • +1

thanks will add it to the heading.

    • Wow, I bought two of these yesterday, arrived today. Talk about quick shipping!

Plugged them in and did a quick visual pixel check (http://jasonfarrell.com/misc/deadpixeltest.php) and couldn't find any dead pixels or subpixels on either of the two monitors except for one that turned out to be the very tip of the mouse pointer… derrrrrp

So, happy happy joy joy two new dev monitors for me!
