This is why I spend all day refreshing ozbargain

Very VERY VERY Very slow drive

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2ueVgIq154

100 odd MB/s write speed, barely better than 2.5inch and definitely slower than a good 3.5 inch.

    • +5

Thanks, you've saved me $49 and some space in my drawers

    • +7

Main reason to buy one of these isn't for speed (for me) it's for resiliency.

Shock proof, and (significantly) temperature proof.

      • I'm buying one with the same reason, even though I have a few T5 already.

    • +2

Read speed is around 300 MB/s mark, which is much better than 2.5inch HDD. Suitable for backup / game drive, etc, where you write once and read many times. WORM

    • +4

just got one. wrote 1.5GB of files I needed to move to my laptop at 150MB/s not bad at all

also yeah 300mb/s read is where it will shine compared to a spinning drive

      also lighter

      and no moving parts

all around it's a win at this price

  • +6

Not USB-C and USB 3.0 soldered.
    So has-been

    • +4

Yeah, it's definitely a good price, but I'm not the biggest fan of the non-replaceable USB cable

    • +2

If you open the case (which is a pain) the USB cable is attached with a small plug on the board inside. It's not exactly removable but could be patched if you break the cable and need to get data off the drive.

  • Thanks OP, good enough for my needs :)

  • Awesome, was waiting on a deal what perfect timing!!

  • Thanks OP - already ready for collection!

  • Wow - pricey but ok i guess and plus side is i can use an SSD plugged into my modem to do backups and 500GB is ok for central backup area (yes 3 copies, 2 different mediums and 1 offsite - 3,2,1 )

    • +1

Not that pricey, where else you can get a 500GB SSD for $50?

  • -1

Can somebody help me to access ssd files over wifi , i have dodo modem and attached hdd throught usb to it. Changed settings of router to display the drive but couldn’t find on windows laptop or samsung phone or smart tv..

who is the undercover from Amazon? Good work!

    • Maybe this is the new normal price

    • Excellent! and I've got $10 off promo 10APP from Amazon

    • Good stuff thanks champ.

    • wow.. went back to $110 - ouch

  • What to buy for $1?

    • -5

A4 paper to wipe your bum

  • Great price thanks!

  • Thanks OP, grabbed one

  • Bought 2 and got free delivery!

  • This thing is (profanity) tiny.

    • Then a M.2 SSD in a case will blow your mind.

      • like a ram slot size? This is smaller than that, not as skinny obviously though.

    • +3

Put your pants back on then.

OOS on ebay, still available on Aamzon

  • Expired on ebay office works!

  • Got a call, purchased from ebay - no stock in warehouses so they ring to arrange a click and collect instead

  • thanks OP nice reason to get out of the house and walk to OW nearby

nothing on the shelves, but they had them all hidden behind the counter

the thing weighs almost nothing. I even thought the box they gave me was empty

  • +1

Plenty of stock on the shelf at my local officeworks. Price tag was printed up without anything saying clearance or sale. I suspect this is actually going to be the price for some time not a mistake/sale price.

    • From working at Officeworks, it will only stay at the lower price for as long as Officeworks' competitors offer it at that lower price, otherwise it goes back up, so TLDR: If you want to buy this drive then buy it quick before the price goes up because you never know when it will go back up.

      • Who are they matching, if you know?

        • +1

Seems to be Amazon, and looks like they're out of stock, so if you're keen then place a click n collect order at your local Officeworks store as soon as you can (if the store has stock) to secure one.

  • +4

Buy it first. Think about it next. Officeworks offers 30 days change of mind. Why not. Ordered one

    • thanks for making it easier for me to decide :D

  • Its strange the Amber one is $117.00 but is identical.
Oh well, I guess we would have heard by now if it was a price error

  • +4

I bought one these are bad

    50MB / Sec write
    200MB / Sec read

    taking back tomorrow

    • Maybe the disk got corrupted?

      • No corruption, fresh from officeworks

    • Benchmark software? It is known with USB 3.0, it does limit the bandwidth (and hence it kinda makes sense for drive maker to put a low cost SSD in it).

If you are using benchmark software, I suggest you copy some files onto the SSD intentionally. Then, run the test. If that doesn't help, with those figures, something is wrong.

  • Thanks, used 10APP on amazon too, bringing down to $39. Perfect for daily work bag.

  • Would it be good to use this for my Xbox series x to put all my Xbox 360 games on it and play them off that?

I have a 750gb WD portable hard drive for them now. Just wondering if this would be better

  • Thank you OP, just bought one.

Can't afford to miss out on this, could be a price error but who knows.

The cheapest SSD that I bought is Samsung T5 (1TB) for $128 so this is a better value imo.

  • Amazon having errors adding to cart? Oos?

    • Went oos but it's available for purchase again.

  • Cheers OP picked one up from Amazone.

Also anyone know the warranty on these? 3 years?

    • +2

      3

      • Cheers buddy.

  • +5

If you managed to get it for $39 (Amazon with that code), it is a great deal. For those who want reasons not to get it. I did some benchmark test on BX200 (arguably one of the worst SSDs).

With Dodgy Hopeless SATA2 to USB3 cable: Seq Read: 137MB/s, Seq Write: 135MB/s
With One of the better cables I have (SATA3 to USB3 cable): Seq Req: 405MB/s, Seq Write: 418.52

The drive is 80% filled. Do bear in mind sequential read/write is more for marketing… as it measures SLC cache performance, rather than the actual TLC NAND performance.
Anyway, if you still have spare SSDs, try to resist getting another one…

  • Should I buy this from officeworks or Amazon?

    • +1

Whichever is cheaper and / or faster delivery.

      • Both pretty similar

    • Same Sh*t, different smell

    • +1

If you are eligible for this offer, then you can potentially save a further $10 ordering from Amazon

      • Thanks champ had no idea about this offer. Ordered another one just for the heck of it.

  • Thanks, bought one at Officeworks Osborne Park. Plenty of stock available.

  • Returned mine straight away when I saw amazon did price match.. don’t want to waste $10 voucher..

  • Just picked mine up - will use it a game drive for my XB1.

  • +3

just confirming , i bought one to have as a spare cheap drive for movies.

cracked it open and it contains a M.2 NVME chip , can be used as a replacement for motherboards that support it otherwise you are SOL if you wanted to use it to replace an old HDD/SSD.

Edit: and its a sandisk , LOL

    • Can i get the model of the Nvme?

      • +3

it was a real (profanity) to open the enclosure but i did it again just for you

        its a Sandisk 20-82-00369-282

        • Possible to provide screenshot of hdtune and photos of drive search seems to indicate msata not nvme

          • +2

            @mrkorrupt: Screenshot of HDTUNE

i would re-open the enclosure but i have already gutted it twice and don't want to break it , unfortunately you will have to take my word for it but it definetly is a M.2 Chip.

            Edit: Part # is WDBMCG5000ABT-WESN

            • @[Deactivated]: Are you absolutely sure it is an m.2 not mSATA? Given the performance and the size of the enclosure, it seems to suggest it could be mSATA.

Also, even if it is m.2, it is more likely to be m.2/SATA. m.2 does support SATA. Crystal Disk Info is reporting the drive is operating in SATA mode.

          • +2

@mrkorrupt: Based on a review, it is SATA:

            https://images.fonearena.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10…

If it is NVMe, Interface would show NVM Express, not UASP (Serial ATA). It is Sandisk SSD (WD bought Sandisk). It doesn't make sense to be NVMe because there isn't a USB 3.0 chipset that is designed for NVMe (you generally need USB 3.1 gen 2 chipset). It could be m.2/SATA, but the size of the portable SDD seems to indicate mSATA is more likely… Anyway, regardless of whether it is m.2 or mSATA, it is SATA based.

    • Have you tried running a benchmark without the enclosure?

Maybe its the bottleneck for its awful performance.

      • It probably is cause it seems it might be limited by USB 3.0 speeds

Edit: benchmarking at 196.5 mbps in enclosure (5 min passthrough) , LOL.

      • While enclosure (through SATA3 to USB3 conversion) would lower the performance, looking at the figures, it is more "cost effective" flash chips are being use in this SSD. We are looking at even more cost effective NAND flash than WD Green. The 4K random read/write performance is just really low and even if you look at the sequential read, it looks like SLC cache is already employed.

I've read 2 reviews with benchmark info. The 4K random write results are consistently below 7MB/s (I'm hoping both reviews got that wrong) - if not, that's worse than Sandisk Extreme Pro USB flash disk (obviously, this WD external SSD is much faster in sequential read/write compared to the USB stick).

      • I got one to use on an old device that only had USB2 to free up a T5. The WD enclosure generated errors so put it in an old SilverStone enclosure (SST-MS09B) and tested again. That removed the errors and improved performance a bit. Now get 450 read and 140 write. Won't be buying any more of them though.

  • Integrated cable? So what happens if the end splits cause of extensive use? throw the entire thing away i guess?

    • nope , if for some reason the end splits before the drive is dead (highly unlikely but possible). Rip out the M.2 Drive and buy a cheap M.2 Drive enclosure and plug and play.

You would probably get better speeds too depending what case you get.

      EXAMPLE

      • If you are quoting getting a m.2/SATA to USB 3.0 enclosure, then the SSD inside would be m.2/SATA, not m.2/NVMe.

        • +2

that would be correct , happy to stand corrected on that one , unfortunately i am unable to re-edit old posts (presumably for good reason).

it is an M.2 Sata and 2282 size just to confirm.

    • Integrated cable? So what happens if the end splits cause of extensive use?

Looking at the internal photo, it looks like you can just plug another cable in to the type C socket on the PCB.

  • Is this good for adding space to ps4?

  • Cannot be purchased online :(

  • Anyone shucked these?

    • Read the comments above… someone reported it is m.2. Even if it is m.2, it would be m.2/SATA.

  • +1

    LOL IT IS SO SMOLL

  • Got the drive today from officworks. There’s something wrong with it, trying to copy few folders and the drive automatically disconnects from the laptop, also hangs macbook . I have other drives which works find though. Returning it tomorrow

    • Which Macbook? Is it one that has USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports? If yes, which dongle / converter did you use? The other drive that works fine, is that external HDD or external SSD?

      • I have macbook pro 2013
No usb c port, normal usb . I use samsung t7 ssd and wd 4 tb hdd. No issue ever.

  • +5

found this on imgur, for the 1TB version, https://imgur.com/gallery/l7Ce9Xm

    • Great, looks like you can replace the USB cable if it gets damaged.

  • My laptop HDD died so can't boot it now. Thinking of replacing HDD with SSD…does anyone know how do I get windows installed on new ssd so can boot my laptop
