  • You might want to say how much one is saving off the regular price, as opposed to the saving in between the previous time this was discounted and now..

  • Not going to neg because I can't confirm it but I'm sure I've seen the same kind of set cheaper at Kmart.

    • not sure if kmart sells gym weights?

      • +1

        they do

      • yer they do, saw them today. I think similar price.

        • I bought this last time, its very good. Last time I checked the onces at Kmart didnt seems to be good quality. Unless Kmart stock is different from the previous one I would stay with this.

    • It used to be cheaper -> Aerial 10kg Dumbbell set $19 ($38pair) @ Kmart. But that was a clearance, looks like they have switched to the 20kg pair set, think I saw it for ~$55.

  • +5

All I know is I can't fathom how they can ship 20kg for $5.99

    • +3

I do know most couriers charge based on volume rather than weight. The couriers handling these packages will surely be getting a workout

    • They've increased it to $8.99 this year, but also reduced the product price by $5. Overall it's still cheaper though!

    • No. $9 courier fee for this product only coz they are very heavy. The others are still $6

    • +1

They have a contract with Aust post with flat rate charge for all parcels but they need to reach a certain volume to get the flat rate.

    • +1

I got this last year and it got delivered to Aus Post. They were super unhappy as they had to lift this mystery box that weighed like over 50kg lol

  • +3

    This is tempting.

Might check out K-Mart before I commit though.

    • +2

I have the KMart ones, they are $59 though I picked mine up for $20 because on of the clips on the case was broken. They look identical to the set posted here but with a black box. Good deal IMO.

      • +1

        Yep. $59 it is.

I'll grab a set from this bargain then!

  • i've got this type, they do not use locking collars just the spin kind with the rubber o-ring, after a while they will come loose and you have to stop and tighten them, maybe you could clamp the ends but it looks too "redneck"?! lol

    • In light of the 'coming loose' issue, do you think this is a good buy?

      • +2

It's the style all ring / spin lock weights I have used / seen suffer from this. It really just means before you use them give em a slight tighten, other wise you might get a little wobble and over a longer period a little loose - however it would be blatantly obvious before they come close to anything like falling off.

        • +1

Agree with Elijha. I have 2 of these sets and they are fine.

    • +1

That's not the main issue using unsheathed dumbbells.

Buy. Some. Gloves. Pronto. Proper weightlifting gloves.

These types of dumbbells with no grip sheath over the bar seriously chaff your hands. Particularly if they have little indented patterns, to simulate grip. I have the hardened calluses on my fingers to prove it.

      • +11

………… or, it could be because of ……………

        • +4

          Hey, it's a work-out either way.

      • yes, it is important to have smooth hands.

  • $2.20 per kg is good for the weights alone

    • Oops you only get 16kg so that's about $2.75 per kg. still pretty good though.

      • +1

The bolts and bar aren't weightless..

  • +2

Anyone know the maximum weight you can put on the bars?

    • +1

Probably more than you can lift with one hand..

    • I would like to know this too.
Are you able to get the whole 20kg onto one bar?

      • No the max you would be able to fit is 18 since both bars are 2kg each. I doubt you would be able to load more than 15kg on it that is 4 x 2.5 + 2 x 1.25.

That said the set will be good for beginners but you would need to buy more weights or join a gym in a few months.

        • I can get 8 x 2.5KG weights on one bar. The collars are not on much but enough to do the job. I have been using them for a year now without any problems, although I only do slow/steady moves with them (not because of the weights but because of what I do). If you do quick curls or other exercises with them them i don't recommend all 8 but you could get 6 x 2.5KG for sure.

    • The most that'll actually FIT properly on a dumb-bell bar like this is 13-16kg depending on the thickness of the plates, the collars and the size of the grip.
I have no experience with this set itself but I have at least 3 dumbbell sets from various manufacturers and you can't physically cram much more than 16kg onto on dumbbell.

    • They look similar to the ones that I have, I've been able to put 40kgs on each, and they could probably fit more. If they're the same thickness as the longer bars, you should be able to put more on these than the longer bars since they're shorter and won't bend as much.

  • Thanks, have been waiting for these for a while.

    • +2

Me 2. Bloody Rebel Sports is a rape off.

      • +14

I didn't know the place was getting that bad

      • That's what you get when you hang around bikies.

  • I been using this, these are fantastic, recommended

    • +3

No need to neg this deal.
I've bought dozens of items from them. When one went missing they replaced it.

    • +1

I agree robinsoa, that is not a reason to neg the deal!!! I have bought 10+ things from 1-day.com.au and they have always been prompt and have never had any issues with contacting them and have found there service to be A1….

  • Can you buy random weights (say, from rebel) and put them on these bars?
Is there some sort of universal bar size and shape so that they will fit on properly?

    • +1

Not always universal, I have some weights that won't fit on my long bar

      • +3

I see what you did there

    • +3

Most are universal, however. I would buy the set then bring the bar to rebel and give it a go.

      • -1

Haven't you heard? Rebel Sports is a rape off!
Also I think Kmart weights are a bit cheaper

      • +3

Most weight plates you can buy have holes of 29mm diameter these days so pretty much any weight plates will fit on these 23mm bars but I would steer clear of Rebel sport for weight plates - they charge around $4 a kg.

You can find cheaper plates (ie around $2:50 a kg) at gym equipment stores - google "cheap weight plates".

Most dumbbells / barbells in the non olympic style (olympic bars are twice as thick on the ends) are 27mm-28mm these days. These ones are only 23mm in diameter which is interesting - I wouldn't stack too much weight on them on lift 'em over your head..

      • good idea…

    • I bought some extra plates from bigw when they were on special some months back, and they work fine. i.e. same size hole.

I'd suspect any from bigw, kmart, amart, rebel, would work fine.

  • -6

20kg way too light for me. will leave this one for the girls

    • +6

surely we not using them for bench press tough bob… LOL

    • -2

i hold both in one hand and curl…

    • lol

  • Not related to the deal, but i think the "look busy" button is great!

  • Can't wait to pack on pounds and pounds of shredded muscle with these things!

    • -2

      what's the point?

      • Chicks mate chicks, subwoofer!

      • Because I'm an attention whore. I'm also a c**t tease!

  • Perfect timing as I'm ready to add another set of 2.5kg plates to the set I bought off 1day last time.

  • Lol: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/36691

Postage was 3 dollars less but price was 5 dollars higher a year ago.

  • -2

You'll use these dumbbells a few times and then put it in storage and never use it again..

Put your money towards a gym membership..

    • +4

You could say the same about a gym membership not being used

    • +1

      F…

I do both, have a weights set at home I dumpster dived as well as a gym membership.

    • I started doing weights with a dumbell set similar to this that was when i was about 14 or so, i have kept doing weights and now have a massive room full of weight equipment and machines and its 20 years on now…..You never know what can start from such humble beginnings.

      • +3

Pics? I want to see what can happen if I keep up with this!

        • Don't bother, all you can do is arms and triceps.. Get a gym membership..

  • -2

Buy a second hand stainless steel dumbbell set from ebay for 25 bucks.

  • How come we can't pay with paypal??

    • I also a little bit worry about my credit card information.
After I made the purchase, I check my credit card detail and
it immediately takes $43.98 using EFTPOS, so weird.

  • just the bars were $40 from rebel sport, so buying this was a no-brainer for me..

  • Got these last year. They are good value.

  • Been using these for a while and combined with a daily protein shake, I've gotten some good results.

    • I have heard protein shakes can be a waste of $ and long term may not even be good for your health. Is there a real point to putting on all this bulk? Is it good for health? or have guys started to feel the insecurity and this is something like a cosmetic trend?

      • +1

protein shakes are (majority of the time) made from dairy protein. It is the same as taking skim milk powder or even milk but at a much more concentrated format as you rule out the excess carbs and fat that milk / skim milk powder contains. It is perfectly natural if you consider dairy or eggs natural and has no bad side effects except for similar ones that you can get from taking too much milk. Which would generally be lactose issues or casein protein issues (if you buy casein protein and not whey protein).

It is not about bulking up as making sure your body has the optimum levels of protein it needs for repair and recovery after a weights session. Bulking occurs when you take more calories in than your body uses up on a daily basis. There are protein powders made for bulking which generally means they have added fats (sometime healthy fats and other times cheaps and nasty fats so make sure you keep track of what fats are added) as well as added carbs and again sometimes the carbs are healthy good carbs and other times can be carbs that are cheap and possibly high up in the GI ratings.

      • If the bulk is muscle then it's ok and has the advantage of burning off fat. As for protein shakes, excessive protein can cause kidney problems but if you're working out you do need extra protein. The daily amount varies between 1.2 grams to 1.8 grams per kg of body weight depending on what exercise you do during the day. I'm in IT so I spend a lot of the day sitting at a computer which definitely is not healthy. So to counter this I do weights a few times a week. It also helps my mental well being and my golf.

  • I just bought a set but the Live Remaining Stock is blank, possibly because I'm at work. Is it working for anyone else and if so what does it say?

        Rebel do rape you

        Good weight to start at
