  • I've been pondering over this and the UDM Pro as well (as an upgrade to my standalone UDM with MESH AC-Pro and AC-LR) as well as getting some cameras installed. JUst can't justify a $1000+ out of pocket at this stage is all. :(

EDIT: Wait, why aren't you going the USW-24-POE for $3 more?

    • Whats the difference between the US and USW?

    • US-24-250W Gen 1 = all 24 ports have PoE.
USW-24-POE Gen 2 = 16 out of 24 ports have PoE. It is also fanless.

yea the Gen 1 is much better poe output but also loud!

The USW-24-POE only has a maximum of 95W power budget for POE devices. Considering cameras average about 7.5W and the Unifi APs are around 12W, you won't be able to connect many devices up.

This one has a budget of 250W.

        Yeah fair enough…

The US-24-250W is LOUD though… so also take that into consideration. I know of many who have done the Noctua mod to fix this up, but I assume you'd be saying bye bye to warranty if you were to do this.

Also depends how many PoE and non-PoE devices you want to have and the environment in which you are deploying. The USW would be a great option for a typical household. It would support 3 x APs (15W allowance) and 5 x Camera (10w allowance), or any combination thereof.

It's also silent, so that would be a huge factor for me. :)

        • Yeah good points. Depending on the use case the Gen2 maybe a better buy.

My switch will be tucked away in a closet (well ventilated) so noise hopefully won't be a big issue.

          • @keyman: Yeah if it's tucked away then no problem! Even if you do find it to be too loud, a few dollars on some quieter fans and you're sweet. :)

@noisymime I know it's not THAT loud, especially by comparison to enterprise kit, but again it depends on the use case and location of the switch. If you're pulling 200W+ that thing will consistently run loud, but even more annoyingly it might fluctuate up and down if use is variable.

I bought one for my local SES unit and remember being surprised how loud it was for a device pulling 250W max. lol

I've got the US-24-250W and honestly it's not THAT loud assuming you've got it in a closed cabinet. Yeah it has a fan, but it's FAR quieter than any rack mount server, even my NAS makes more noise than it.

Edit: I'm only pulling about 60W through its PoE, so take that into account I guess.

This is Gen 1. Gen 2 is out as well (may or may not suit all, but always good to know your options).

  • +2

    I have this and a UDM-PRO and it's a great combo!

  • Thanks OP. Time to sell off my US-8-150W and upgrade

  • Been having a terrible run with these Gen1 switches. Had plenty of them randomly after power failures start up and show the blue light like they are working but dont connect to the management server. (this itself isnt a massive issue) Then they either pass some traffic or none at all (they like to kill DHCP traffic). However the wireless points connected to the switch show up in the management controller but dont pass traffic either. After extensive log gathering and back and forth with support they suggest I get some replaced if I still have warranty. However their warranty is only 1 year. The problems have occurred at 3 different sites so not related to one setup as they are all different.

For a business I'd suggest to steer clear if you need a reliable network. If your happy to put up with regular bugs or have your switch die an early death with no warranty go for it. (I mean 1 year for 'enterprise' grade hardware is pathetic)

  • Very keen pricing. I just paid $540 for the Gen2 delivered. I don’t need the big POE power budget, need almost all the LAN ports and definitely can’t afford fan noise - as it’s in the lounge room. Definitely a great price for the Gen1 though if you need all that POE 👍🏾
