Buying 100,000 Choice Rewards should net me 140,000 points with the 40% bonus which convert to 112,000 Qantas or Velocity Points once converted.

The cost of 100,000 Choice Rewards is US$990, so the effective cost per QF/VA point is US$0.0088, which is around 5X cheaper compared to buying points directly from Qantas. The maximum amount of Choice Rewards you can buy in a calendar year is 180,000 (excluding bonuses), and purchased points will be credited to your account within 24h

Perth to London in Business will cost you 126,500 Qantas Points one way + taxes. A cash fare with Qantas in business comes to around $9,000 return. The same fare booked with points would cost you US$2227.5 + taxes, so you’re looking at a significant saving if you were to use them for a ticket like this.

… Just sharing some figures from the source for people that will say this is too much work.

Probably also worth mentioning the One world RTW ticket. For about the same number of points as the PER-LHR RTN in J, you could get a Round the World ticket in Premium Economy. This is 5 stop overs, up to 35,000 miles, and up to 16 flight sectors within 353 days for 249,600 points plus taxes. If you wanted it in Business class, you'll need another 69k points (nice) which is pretty easy to do… Might be of interest to others who are looking to go post-covid adventuring when possible.

    • +6

yeah it's pretty crazy, eg that business fare to London - what, an hour's work to save $7k!

      • +4

The advantage is that the point redemption amount is fixed… It doesn't change (well, it infrequently changes)

Carriers have reduced their capacity… Not just stored aircraft, but sold or ended leases on their aircraft as well.
I'm expecting cheap dollar prices to entice the early adopters back into the air… But once it is perceived as safe again by the mainstream, there will be an influx of hungry travellers and a lack of seats. This will lead to some pretty crazy prices in the future.

        • +4

I think it’s very unsafe to rely upon points redemption figures previously used for international flights when things resume. As you say, the prices can expect to vary considerably. I doubt the points required will remain stable.

  • -4

Good safe find beatthatflight. Some Choice members can buy 180,000 points - that is a total of 250,000 points for USD1782 i.e around $2300 AUD. So effectively $2300 AUD for 500,000 points in VA or QF!!!

    • +6

how do you go from 250,000 choice points to 500,000 QF ? wouldnt it be 200,000 QF?

      • +1

        Yes.

    • +1

Your maths is a bit off there buddy, 250,000 choice points is only 200,000 QF/VA points. Normally 1 choice point is worth 0.4 QF/VA points, with the double promo it's now 0.8.

    • I think it's 1:0.8 with the double rate so around 200,000 QF or VA.

    • How does it work? So its 252,000 points after purchase. Then transfer to Qantas you'll get 201,600 Qantas points. Definitely not 500k.
The promotional rate is 1 Choice point = 0.8 Qantas point.

    • +4

Yes! my bad its around 200K QF - clearly being on Ozbargain on Sat night is not good!!!

      • -8

Shoulda stayed in school instead of getting ur education from ozbargains

  • +3

    I don't value 10k QF over A$100, not a good deal.

    • How much is Qantas points worth these days? 1 point = 1c or less?

      • +2

        WWS 2000 points=1000QF=A$10.

I don't recommend to use QF for redemption of long haul international as QF charges ridiculously high tax/surcharge which is likely to be higher than the price of cash fare.

It's only useful in domestic flight or flight less than 2 hours.

        • +4

or you can use them for partners, like Emirates where the taxes are fairly low, depending on the city in Europe you fly into (Nice was good!)

      • pointhacks says 1.9c per point.

but they also say a velocity point = a krisflyer point = 1.7c per point.

Krisflyer is easily the best FF program when it comes to redemptions - fantastic availability, fantastic business/first product AND the taxes are very reasonable/low

in todays market a velocity point should = 0.01c per point at best

        • It all depends. A lot.

Krisflyer is amazing value for me in Perth (well, was and hopefully will still be when international travel is a thing again!). From the east coast it's good but not as great.

At the moment though QF points are king. I can't see travel outside of a few places like NZ and maybe Singapore opening up any time soon, so domestic it is.

          • @jasonb: Qantas points redemptions on Qantas have insane surcharges, better on some partners though. Krisflyer good, but also high surcharges (not as bad as Qantas). Virgin was good for me specifically for the Melbourne -> Bangkok route on Singapore Airlines via Singapore (cheap taxes, same points cost as just Melbourne -> Singapore, decent availability), but who knows what's going to happen with that now.

Got > 900k Velocity points at the moment, ~500k QFF, will burn through them somewhere but unlikely to be as good as it was.

    • your right, if you fly a lot they are worth a lot more.

  • +4

I like it and it seems sneaky, but you're paying around $1,300 AUD for 200,000 points.

I'll stick to my opening new credit cards system thanks, most of them cost $0.

    • +1

      $2,3000 AUD for 200,000 QF/VA Points.

      • +1

That’s junk. Unless ur gona use it to upgrade flights to first class it’s not worth it.

      • 2,300?

  • +1

Is there anything else to use the Qantas points other than business flights? I'm happy on economy.

    • +2

you can use them in Economy too. But people find the best 'value' tends to be for upgrades or just using to pay for higher classes. Eg I treated myself a couple of years back to NZ going 1st class on Emirates. Incredible experience, if only for 3 hour flight + 3 hours in lounge.

Business to Europe on Emirates and back on Qatar also just made travel so much nicer. But each to their own. There's also the Qantas store for buying appliances etc, but the point per dollar ratio is nowhere near as good :/

      • The point per dollar not good but when they run their appliances points discount promotion, it will be good?

        • +1

          Almost always: no.

Economy flights are fine to use with points. I have. I mean, if you care about how many flights you'll get, you'll get more flights.

Business prices are about 3x to 5x the cost of economy tickets, but only about 2x-2.5x the points.

  • +2

I can only imagine how difficult reward seats will be to even find when boarders do open 🤐

    • -2

Not that hard, you don’t know how and when to redeem the reward flights (has to be right timing). I had no problems redeeming 4 business return tickets every year for my family.

And, if you are gold or platinum tier, Qantas releases reward seats to you first before general public. Not hard to get gold or platinum too when Qantas has double credits promotion (if you understand and know how to do the status run)

      • -1

And you think the past, will be like the future?

      • do you have any info on where I can read up about this or..what to google exactly to understand this? thank you

        • I'm just basically saying, international travel probably won't be normal for years to come.

The way rewarding seating works may change, seats may be more limited than ever etc

It's really unknown, so it's risky buying points. It was explained well down below by someone else.

  • -2

But then again why would you credit your flights to Qantas. Both AA and Alaska offer better reward programs.

  • +1

VA should be paying you to transfer points to their program.

with no international flights, no krisflyer transfer option, no international partner airline redemption's……………..what use is a VA point?

pointhacks needs to seriously reduce its VA $/point value to…….worthless.

    • Has VA said there will be no international flights once borders open?

      • +2

their international flight schedule will be minimal maybe NZ or fiji.

Remember they dont have any 777's anymore only 737's - so this is going to limit their international offerings and also the quality of their business product

        • This is interesting. I have a few credit cards that I have the option of converting rewards points to VA or krisflyer. Krisflyer are a bit harder to manage with their expiry and no family pooling but still might be worth it considering what you're saying.

  • +5

I've not looked at the points game for a while but I wonder what the availability is going to be once international travel resumes. It was excessively hard IMO with Qantas (compared with other programs and ex Australia) finding flight redemptions (got those who don't know, only a few seats are redeemable with points per flight) before Covid ex Australia, Now with many point balances building up through credit card spend and no redemptions. It could be very hard competing for the few seats available. You don't want your money stranded in hard to use points. I don't think it's necessarily good to hold points with the risk of devaluation (frequent flyer programs have a history of short notice increases to redemption costs). Including taxes and fuel surcharges in the value proposition, I'd be considering the pros and cons of savings vs risks and ensuring you have a redemption in mind for the medium term.

Others who are better over the current situation in the points world might know better than me.

    • -5

Exactly what I wrote above & I got negged 😂😂😂

      • -2

        Awwwwww I care 🤌🤏

  • +2

I don’t see how this is that much better than buying wine plus points from Qantas? I’ve bought $250 of wine with 15000 bonus points a few times in the past, and you get really nice wine also.

    • RRP of the wine from Qantas may be inflated or higher than if you were to buy them from other stores. Again if the wine is unique to Qantas store then yea it’s a good alternative.

      • +1

Generally the wine from Qantas is the same or cheaper than most other places.

      • +2

Nop. If you do a few spot checks, you'll find out they try to match it with Dan Murphy's

  • Plenty of people redeemed their points for 0.6cents last year…

  • Depends on which route you're flying but it's generally not worth it.

BNE to SYD (return) on QF: 16,000 QF points
    16,000 QF points = 20,000 choice points
    20,000 choice points = US$140 ~ A$180 + taxes ($80)

    Worth it? I think not.

    • +1

It is never worth it if you use points for economy reward seats. It is only worth for business, first class seats and flying with infants (free with Qantas).

Personally, I value points the most for flights to the US, EU where Qantas flies with B787-9 and A380, these aircrafts have the best business seat on the market.

      • It depends, some pacific destinations are pretty good value, like new caledonia. Of course it doesn't apply now because borders are closed.

      • +1

It is never worth it if you use points for economy reward seats.

Incorrect. Economy Classic Rewards can be very worthwhile when the equivalent airfare is high.

Particularly during public holidays and school holidays, which are almost always excluded from sales, and on more expensive routes like Lord Howe Island. The savings can be huge.

        • Yes you are right I agree.

Lord Howe Island is a good redemption and it is worth the points, I have never been to Lord Howe Island because there is no Hilton or Marriott properties, and it is hard to book accommodation during school holidays

      • redemption bookings for domestic is hardly ever worth it unless the price is super high (ie; lord howe etc)

australias domestic business is maximum level trash (unless its a qantas 330 with its good international business on a sydney to perth route)

        • They are bringing back A330 for domestic flights
          https://www.executivetraveller.com/news/big-birds-are-back-a…

          • @T-man: so business redemption's will be worth it on long domestic routes.

but dont expect them to stay but, soon as those international borders come down, seeya later, back to the crappy 737

          • @T-man: Saw an A330 option among flights I was looking at and had to take it for the novelty.

            Sadly just economy.

      • Worth pointing out that QAN have no A380s flying in the foreseeable future as all are now in long term storage..

  • +2

On velocity wine store you can get 10000 points and 12 bottles of wine for $179

  • Wait a minute, how is 1.17c ~ 1c? Is my calc off?

    • This was my calcs
      10,000 choice points plus bonus 4,000=14,000 for ($US99) $AU128.04, $0.0091 or ~1c
      Transfer 14,000 Choice for 11,200 QFF=$0.0114 or 1.14c

I think you mean "found on flighthacks" :)

    • -2

      hah, fair. Will fix

  • This is great! Business class on A330 from Perth to East coast cost 41,500 pts one way! Thanks for sharing!

Time to top up my points again. Heres come 1 million points club!!

  • You can just buy points directly from members for cheaper…

Not strictly legal but we all have a few long lost cousins.

  • bough the point, not instance showing up. still waiting on the points to my Choice account, and i can transfer to Qantas

  • Is it worth it for Hotels booking

  • Isnt it cheaper to just sign up to a credit card deal, pay $400 annual fee and get 100k + points and earn points for a whole year.

    EG: https://www.pointhacks.com.au/credit-cards/qantas-premier-pl…

Qantas Premier Platinum Mastercard has 100,000 bonus Qantas Points Annual Fee: $199 for the first year

    • +1

yes, depends on how value your credit scores. i am facing issue to have too many applications on credit card :(

  • not received the points yet, almost 24 hours

  • not received the points yet, more than 48 hours

    • hoping its due to being weekend in the states ?

      • hopefully :)

    • Me too

Your recent Choice Privileges® transaction could not be completed. The transaction has been canceled and your credit was not charged.

        • Same here. Received that email a few hours ago. Purchased (well attempted) on Saturday night.

        • save for me as well

        • Yeah, I got the cancellation this morning as well. There was no problem with my 28Deg card going through.

          • @Alphaduck99: Has anyone called and asked them? My one is still pending.

  • Unobtainable. No issues with my credit card but got the following email similar to other users -

Your recent Choice Privileges® transaction could not be completed. The transaction has been canceled and your credit was not charged.

    • +1

I read this in the conditions. “Your primary loyalty earning preference should be set to Choice Privileges points in order to buy points.”

      • After change the preference to Point, shall we try again
        just give up this thing

      • It was already set to that option, still didn't work

  • Other interesting partners include Alaska & United (which might give some Star alliance transfer possibilities) - assuming these aren't limited to US customers.

    • …. except those don't have the double points offer (its only QFF & Velocity), so it wouldn't be worthwhile anyway.

  • +2

My points were in my account this morning and I was able to transfer to immediately.

    • How many points did you buy please?

    • Did you purchase Saturday night?

      • +2

        Monday night 32000 points

        • Ok cool thank you. I've just tried for 120K now, will see how it goes. (I did 180K previously).

        • Thanks, I've done 90k today, hopefully it goes through quickly.

          • @kingzac: Got my initial points from my purchase yesterday, bonus points yet to come through though

            • +1

@kingzac: That weird - mine came through in a single transaction

              • @digitalane: Not sure why it hasn't transaction summary is clear about the total.
I've sent them an email to ask why they didn't go through together

              • @digitalane: I just called them and their customer service line doesn't seem to know much about it. Tried to tell me I bought them through another website (looks like transaction is processed by points.com).
I had to walk them through the process and the terms and conditions and mentioned other people's points went through in one transaction.
They seemed a bity perplexed about what to do so they're chasing it up. We'll see what happens.

                • @kingzac: Just to update I called again yesterday and the man on the phone went through the website and checked the details, he genuinely seemed like he wanted to get it sorted. Said he would call back in 10-15 minutes after going through it, checked phone number a couple of times, then never called back.
Still no bonus points today. It's going well.

                  • @kingzac: Finally got there. Edward in the customer service department is the fixer. Had to call again today and Edward got it sorted in a couple of hours. Converted to Qantas points now and we're good to go!
