Better invest on wifi 6 routers. These older routers are not worth it anymore

    • Can I ask what is a wifi 6 router? Why do they need upgrading? What’s a good recommendation?

I have an old AC56U that will need upgrading soon

WiFi 6 is an "AX" router. This is an "AC" router.

For the record, I don't agree with paying more now for AX unless you have just bought a bunch of brand new devices that all support AX. I don't have a single AX device in my house (my newest device is a 3 year old iPhone X). I have a AC86U and it is pretty good. It delivers 265Mbps anywhere in my 5 bedroom house. It will be a few years before I need any more than that, by which time the current router will be dead and then I will replace with a newer tech device.

Some reasons to upgrade to Wi-Fi 6.

        1. if you have Gigabit HFC or FTTP.
        2. you own Wi-Fi 6 devices.
        3. you want 800Mbps-990Mbps speeds on Wi-Fi.

Wi-Fi 5 is still adequate for most Oz folks on 25Mbps-100Mbps and the Asus RT-AC86U has 512MB of RAM and a 1.8Ghz dual-core CPU.

    • Paying a premium that many devices won't take advantage of for a couple more years. Not to mention majority of the wifi 6 routers at the moment won't be meeting the full ax specs.

      • Wifi 6 isn't like 8k tv resolution. Totally useful now actually, if you have a lot of devices.

        • Only if those devices are compatible, which most are not. Only the iPhone 12 onwards have AX (iPhone 11 and earlier only had AC - not sure about Android devices), so probably only devices from 2020 onwards (in most cases) can use it.

I would guess that for most people this would be a fairly small minority of their devices, as well as the fact that AC (a decent router) is quite capable of pushing out wifi at speeds much faster than most people have (I have tested up to 265Mbps which is fast as mine goes) - all of which which makes AC not very useful at all to most.
