  • Got 2.

  • Sold out =(

Now makes me wonder about the clowns that ordered more than 2.. if they only have 2000 drives to sell, and they've sold 2000 deals, clearly the maths doesn't work..

    • +1

im not sure, just a guess, but could 1x deal = 1x drive. So when people bought the max of two, they bought "two deals"?

      • Didnt it say you can order as many as you like for gifts?

      • Didnt it say you can order as many as you like for gifts?

  • +8

Somewhere deep inside me, I hope all the naysayers in this thread didn't buy one until it's too late, and have now missed this deal. Am I being naughty?

    • -5

I could be persuaded to part with the one I bought, at $130 :) Still not a bad deal, considering what's out there at the moment…

  • Damn it. I was waiting for too long.

    • next time don't sit on the fence too long!.

  • +3

I've been watching this all morning and held off.

It isn't possible for a profit margin to exist at this price. Even prior to the floods this price would get you a 500Gb drive. Its still in the shortage cycle and their selling these things at 35% RRP and offering free delivery on top?!

I'll rather just watch this thread to see if I gambled correctly :)

    • and if this supplier (which has been around for 15 years, yet no one in SA on these forum has ever heard of them) has the capacity to bulk order this many drives, then how have bulk ordered in the past and got rid of them?

Why do they have the ability to bulk order at this price and say MSY dont?

      • +2

Big sold these hard off for around $68 http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/53455

well MSY are trying to make more money… as normal

        • MSY are normally tight on their margins. Its their buying power that gives them that flexibility.

Are you saying MSY could buy these drives under $65 and mark them at $189?

        • Herp-a-derp. Pay attention to the date. 22/09/11 = Several weeks before floodwaters ruined all the industrial parks in Thailand and distribution channels dried up.

(Seagate's production wasn't as badly affected as WD but they are themselves suffering a shortage of critical components, so this directly impacts their bottom line. Plus they'll artificially go with the status quo anyway.)

    • same i held off as well.

but then read those posts about how they would honour the deal

now i dont know if my gamble was CORRECT !!!

      :(

    • +1

Doesn't matter if a profit margin exists for them. If the drive does not get delivered in a reasonable amount of time, call your credit card company, fill out a form online and the payment gets credited back to you, no harm done.

  • rats…. missed out. I tend to only check deals in the evening…. guess Id better check twice a day ;)

nice deal though. I look forward to future deals from Ourdeal ;)

    • +3

You're obsessing somewhat over this missed deal Tim, time to let it go mate! ;)

    • Big W was flogging them last year for less than the lowest (American) price recorded on Newegg there. Seagate drive production wasn't directly impacted by the Thai floods and this is only $3 cheaper than when I bought one from a major Aussie retailer pre-flood. Or OurDeal could be using this as an opportunity for marketing and reducing their cut or even subsidising it.

That said, I'm more concerned at the email posted elsewhere in these comments where they said that it was Chinese stock. I hope they mean made in China (which is normal) rather than sourced on the Chinese market, given the fact that fake external hard disks pop up in various parts of China. When mine arrives I'll be thoroughly checking it.

      • I suspect it's made in China stock. I had a look at a HDD (think it was a Seagate) and it sad Made in China.

  • Anyone wanna turn their external drive into a NAS box? :) hehe

    http://www.expresspcparts.com.au/Items/NET-111-ALT-NST-600-N…

    • If you have a spare computer you may just use FreeNAS(www.freenas.org) to turn it into a NAS box. The software is free, powerful and stable.

      • just don't forget that a whole computer will use up way, way more power than a small NAS device like that Vantec.

A spare computer would take up maybe 80 watts. At 22.759c/kWh (before the price rise on the 31st of May 2012), that would cost you 1.82c an hour, 43c a day, $39 a quarter, which equates to $156 a year.

A small NAS adaptor like the Vantec would use quite a fair bit less power.

        • you would also have to factor in the cost of running the external usb power adapator - not sure how much that would be…

        • freenas 7-8 is incredibly easy to set up

if you limit it to just CIFS its really a no brainer

      • Have you tried to set up freenas? I must've spent 2 whole days trying to get it to work properly, with a lot of the documentation that's on the net being out of date.

Whereas, a little box is plug in and go..

        • really? is it that hard? I have been meaning to get my freenas setup on the HP microservers i bought, i havent gotten around to it yet, was hoping it wouldnt be too difficult, sounds like it is?

        • There are a some really good tutorials floating about. Following them makes it easy to add your hdd, add mount points & share them. Using the tutorials it will take approx 30mins or less. Unless some of your hardware is not supported & you have to muck around with drivers (eg gigabit ethernet)

here are a couple I found quickly
          tute1 tute2 tute3

Ive been using freenas for 3 years or so & really like it. A big plus is that it all can be configured via a html page

      • I use unraid personally. I have a 40Tb server that runs like a dream. When putting it together I purchased premium parts (motherboard and RAM are server class mission critical grade stuff, as are the SAS cards and what not), however you can set up a 2-3 drive system in a tiny case with hardware specs of basically something you had sitting around in your cupboard for a lot less.

It's got data redundancy and after the hardware assembly (I took a lot of time to do this right, with correct cable management etc so that the airflow would be unimpeded and temp would stay way down. 20HDDs in one case, not one runs above 27 degrees) the actual UnRaid installation took minutes.

You need to preclear the drives which on a 2Tb drive takes a day but you just set it going and leave.

Love it, it's great, just in case anyone cares.

        • +1

          Are you…the 1%?

        • psst…I hope it's brazzer so that we can get a discount code

  • Ill be using this for my server (unraid)

They really should enforce the limit like a lot of other voucher companies do. They specifically said only 2 per person and yet it seems like people bought way above that.

    • very hard to enforce since you can use multiple accounts and multiple credit cards…

      • That is true, but then again its all about delivery address, i suppose if people want to go create multiple accounts and use multiple credit cards then thats fine but it will still stop a lot of people from doing it and only the really keen people would go over the limit. I just think its a shame when it looks like there were lots of other people who probably missed out on it.

Dont get me wrong, i was tempted of course but i decided to follow the rules and only get 2 as i knew this would get hammered and i figured others may miss out. Saying that i had no idea it would make it onto ozbargain, i bought mine ages ago. Lucky i did i suppose.

        • Its limit of 2 vouchers, each voucher limit to 2 HDDs. So its 4 HDDs limit.

        • -1

delivery address isn't a huge issue either

i have a PO BOX + home address + work addresses + any number of investment properties you can drop it off too

2,000 drives in 3-4hrs isn't too bad really for ozbb rape!

        • +4

Having more barriers will discourage people from doing it. Remember - not everyone has a PO Box or cna receive packages at their work address. Those with multiple investment properties usually have better things to do than scam a site for a few cheaper hard disks.

  • Amir - I dont get it, i am sure it states a limit of 2 vouchers. Each voucher is per hdd and hence a unique voucher code. So 2 hdds.

    • You were allowed to order 2 HDDs per voucher :) at least thats what I did.

      • Actually Amir, i think what you have done is ordered 4 vouchers. In lots of 2. You can order multiple vouchers per purchase / order on Ourdeal or any other voucher company. It just puts 2 vouchers / voucher codes onto 1 PDF document for you. So since you placed 2 separate orders and on each order you asked for 2 vouchers, you ended up with 4 vouchers even if they are on 2 separate PDF files. Each voucher is determined by the voucher code. There is only 1 voucher code per hdd.

        • I will email them and check :D

    • +1

      hehehehe

i just read this convo in the previous posts

      now its continuing

      good work! :)

  • if the enclosure is truly problematic, might put the drive into one of these http://www.umart.com.au/newindex28.phtml?id=10&bid=7&sid=410…

    • It only accepts drives up to 1.5TB in capacity.

      • strange, i already have one of these and am running a 2TB drive in it, all recognised.

  • +3

    Hi All,

I've just signed up to give a warning to some people in case they are not aware of this. Please don't use this HDD as the one and only drive to keep all of your important data. This particular brand has a very high rate of failure (any other brands have failed too I must say). Instead, use this drive as a secondary back up and in the future if it fails then you will still have your data in the other drives. I just wish that someone could have told me this. I wouldn't then have lost 800GB of my data. I bought this 2TB Seagate from Office Works for $99 and I thought that it was a bargain.4 months later, I lost everything. I've spent many days on Google of how to recover the data and I've tried everything that anyone suggested. I had 2 choices, either return for a new one or crack the case open. I decided to do the later, unfortunately I've voided the warranty and still didn't get my data back.

I'm sorry if this story is boring to some people, but I do hope that it might help others as a warning.

    • +1. Learn all you can from the mistakes of others. You won't have time to make them all yourself. ~Alfred Sheinwold

      • I'm sorry if this story is boring to some people, but I do hope that it might help others as a warning. - Skowrid

        • -1

my question would be… why put 800gb on a $99 drive?

if the data is that valuable you need to be putting it on a 2nd drive of different brand etc.

    • Good on you for posting.
Seems everyone is so hot for the price that they are blind to the fail-ness of this shirty drive.
      Data loss aint no fun…

Try the freezer method if all else fails. Hope you get your data back.

      • @King Tightarse. Tried that as well. I even called the data recovery company who will charge a minimum $90 per hour to have a look at it and still couldn't promise if the data can be recovered at all or at least it won't be cheap. After spending a few days on Google I believe that I've done pretty much everything I could.

@tonyjzx, that's the exact point I was trying to make. Sadly for me, I only learned my lesson through mistakes, but other people don't have to go through the same thing like me. That's all.

        • Did you try TestDisk? It helped me recover my corrupted partition.

      • I presume you've taken out the drive and connected it via SATA/IDE, and that your not trying to data recover via USB. I presume you've not just attempted to access it via my computer to make your final decision…

So does the drive click when running? What sound does it make, if any? Is it spinning?

If it clicks, the best way is to leave it cool, take some frozen goods out of your freezer, wrap them in 4 plastic bags to minimise condensation, put one under the hard drive, one above it. Wait 5 minutes so the drive is chilled and the components internally contract. Launch a tool like Acronis True Image and do a sector-by-sector duplication to image file of the drive.

If you can get this far, your laughing. Its a case of mounting the image and working out what damage has been done. If the file systems not readable, theres a ton of free tools out there for recovering the MFT, recovering files and even the windows based CHKDSK can do wonders.

    • haha

      you're 2000 to late

    • Sorry but I learnt a long time ago keep all important data in 3 different HD :D

    • +4

      @Skowrid

"This particular brand has a very high rate of failure"

Stopped reading right there. You know absolutely jack all about HDDs. Thanks for nothing.

The average failure rate amongst all the major manufacturers is near as makes no difference. Seagate's firmware problems from 2007 with the 7200.11 Barracuda's have seriously stained their image and this continuing mass hysteria about the "Click of Death" and other assorted buzz words is being perpetuated by either clueless fanboys or just computer illiterates.

      Stop embarrassing yourselves.

      • +4

@Amar89, please correct me if I'm wrong. I got a feeling that you get offended by my comments and your reply seemed like an insulting to me. If you're working for this company in anyway, then I have no further comments for you as I'm not here to debate about which brand is good or what's not.

I merely made this comment as a "warning" to people not to store all data in one hdd regardless of what brand. I even said "any other brands have failed too I must say". I made a bad comment about this particular brand because I had a bad experience from it and it seems that I'm not the only one. Have a search on the Internet or read the comments/links above me about the feedbacks.

I didn't try to stop people from buying, as a matter of fact I made my comments when the deal was done.

I believe that this is a community site, everyone is here to help each other. Any good thing please pass it on, any bad thing please let others know. Please don't call others as "clueless or computer illiterates". Even if you are smarter than them or know more than them, it doesn't make yourself look good by looking down on others.

        • -4

Please, don't try and weasel your way out of what you said with gushing, sentimental overtones. It's not working.

The fact that you went so low as to accuse me of being some kind of paid "shill" is evidence enough you're just dumbfounded that someone called you out on your blatant ignorance.

You said in NO uncertain terms that Seagate has a higher rate of failure than other HDD manufacturers. Period.

Whatever else you wrote doesn't really interest me and is of no relevance to my reply. That's what I took issue with. That statistic that you plucked out of thin air which holds no weight.

The percentage of RMAs in the amount of units shipped annually by every major manufacturer is as follows:

More specifically, here are the failure rates for 2TB HDDs:

If you really want to get into a pissing contest with link spam upon link spam of verified studies, by all means just ask.

Like I said before, Seagate is realistically no worse or better than the other 3 powerhouses of magnetic drive manufacturing. It's the firmware troubles in 2007 (which were patched I might add, and in a timely fashion, I should know I've had several 7200.11's) that have left an unshakable blemish upon their brand which to this day, is still being carried around like a disease by people who refused to be informed otherwise, regardless of what the actual metrics say.

I really don't have the patience to argue over semantics with people who in the first instance talked out of their rear end and then turn around and try accuse people who rightfully correct them of either being A) rude (well boo hoo) or B) disinformation agents.

"I made a bad comment about this particular brand because I had a bad experience from it and it seems that I'm not the only one. Have a search on the Internet or read the comments/links above me about the feedbacks."

Out of the millions of hard drives shipped annually, some one has to the get the duds. It's a mathematical certainty and not an indication of brand unreliability.

You were unlucky, and so were the majority of the people who one-star a hard drive on Amazon or Newegg with despair-laden, one paragraph reviews.

        • +6

Amar89 - you could be more polite when correcting others. Arrogance wins you no friends.

        • Wow, your taking all this a bit seriously Amar… why?

The main point here is that this is sold as an external hard drive package, not an individual Seagate hard drive. I also see no one mentioning the old firmware issue. Let it go… breath…
If you need to consider all factors when assessing it as such. There are multiple possible failure points. The HDD is only one link in the chain.
Enclosure design re heat build up, control board, power supply even the quality of the cable and connectors add together to make the unit. Only a few people crack them open and take out the HDD alone.
A poorly designed enclosure allowing excessive heat build up is plenty enough to kill the finest disk.
This units bad reputation could be due to any of those factors. Its as strong as its weakest link.

Having a go at Skowrid is ridiculous. He/she simply related their personal experience in the spirit of the a community forum.

          Ozbargain not 4chan old boy…

      • +3

        Your quote is super mate.

This bloke is telling his personal experience.
Hard drive statistic "opinions" are one thing and branded hard drives packages another. A poorly designed (overheating) enclosures with 'whatever' control board, cable and power supply are another. Most people buy this as a complete package, not just for the drive. There's more factors than just the drive alone.
Read some reviews of this particular model. It consistently does badly.

His input is entirely valid, as is yours but when you write things such as "thanks for nothing" and "stop embarrassing yourselves" you come over with a horrible attitude, just straight up rude. BTW as to your "statistics": no source = meaningless

Happy New Year 2012 and all the best for the years to come.

      Here's your help:

      www.grc.com/spinrite.htm

  • yeah, the drive is known for its issues for long term use, but a quick snapshot backup, once, is great, and yes i occasionally buy the cheap nasty ones for 1 snap shot job, and use them maybe once or twice again in 6-12 months, they are fine.

65 bucks for 2 tb is hard to beat.

  • Hey, anyone know if the pdf voucher must be attached to the email order? Axeze only ask for "OurDeal voucher ID" and not the voucher itself.

  • just read this :
    http://www.productreview.com.au/p/our-deal/2.html

hopefully they deliver it within the timeframe, but not too sure after reading this

    • -1

even group on or spreets just got 1.x stars…
This place is designed for complaint…

    • Well it's up to the individual companies who offer the deal. OurDeal themselves have nothing to do with the delivery, they just organise the offer.

      • +2

If you bought a ticket from ticketek and the concert got cancelled, who would you chase up for a refund?

    • I think the first comment is hilarious:

"We purchased a deal for an air guitar for our son for Christmas"

Um, Ma'am, we totally delivered that, it's an air guitar so it's a little hard to see but if your sun assumes the post and starts making guitar sounds with his mouth you will see that the air guitar has not only been delivered to you a week ago (it's invisible remember) but also that it is in perfect working order.

      Regards,

      OurDeal :-)

In all seriousness though, all those complaints except for one or two that I saw were for non shipped items. OurDeal doesn't ship the items and neither are they responsible for said shipping. If it was prompt I would say that a good customer service experience would be if they got right back to you and said they would forward your details on to the supplier.

Our Deal's product (and all the other ones) is to put you in touch with a heavily discounted deal from a company and process payment for it. If they do that and the vouchers are issued, unless the voucher is specifically no honoured (i.e. the place says "Nope, won't take the voucher") then people really need to follow it up with the company.

They should, however, immediately forward all contact details for the company to be contacted on. In addition, they should probably vet the companys for their ability to deliver. If you have 2000 Hard Drives advertised, please send us a photo of the stock, with you and today's newspaper in the picture :-)

That might be a good idea for someone, start up one of these deal companies and then only offer deals that have been vetted for being able to deliver. Customer confidence = lots of deals sold if the others keep up the game the same way they have been :-)

    Just received this:-

Thank you for your purchase of 2TB Hard Drives.

Whilst we cannot guarantee these are Seagate Drives, we have been told they are, and they are branded Seagate.

Your order is being processed and we will let you know when we are shipping.

We will require the full 14 days to ship the goods, but if shipped earlier or delayed we will let you know.

    Axeze

Very unhappy about this, how can they advertise it as seagate and then pull this s***???

    • -1

Yeah got email too. Don't feel right. Let's see what happens. Don't mind if they deliver something better than Seagate as Seagate is already a lower quality stuff.

      • +2

Yeah, for 65 bucks it's sure to be something top-of-the-line. jks

    • +2

I too got this email. I have sent them a fairly hefty reply saying how dissatisfied I was to be hearing this, and that if they are prepared to ship 2000 drives (with a total value of $130,000 paid out by us) with only the word of the dodgy dropship company they are using for authenticity then had better be prepared for legal repercussions if something goes sour. Will wait to hear the reply.

  • +1

We are protected under consumer law if the good is not supplied as is in the advertising. I just carefully had a look over the description on ourdeal page and spotted nothing saying that this might be not Seagate. In another word, it clearly says that the hard drive is Seagate and even furthermore stated the model, which is expansion.
