  • Nice how did you come across this intel! ? :P

Sadly I don't have inside information, it's on the main page at BigW website. I've edited the post showing the link to the deal.

Great price, but this unit gets mixed reviews:
    Quoting DSE website reviews:

"The drive is easy to plug in and is in working order in a few minutes. No software is required unless you care to try the programmes included. The HDD is presentable in appearance & makes no noise.
However, this noiselessness proves to be a mixed blessing. No fan to cool it! It warms to around 52 degrees which is considered too hot for a long life
I have mine up on short "legs" with space all around it but to keep the temperature below 50 I have to turn it off.
I believe that it just is not designed for the Brisbane, Qld, climate"

    More here at Newegg:

    And Seagate forums:

    http://forums.seagate.com/t5/Other-External-products/Problem…

Thanks OP for a good find price wise, just want people to be aware this unit could be a mixed blessing.
    Data loss aint fun.

    • nothing is designed for brisbane climate.

      • +1

Apparently not designed for Canberra climate either. I bought one 6 months ago, copied all my smaller drives across to it. It died within 3 months.

        • I'd say not designed for any climate whatsoever …

    • +2

Then i cant complain for use down here in tassie :)
All computers down here are so cold they work at peak efficiency!

      • +5

You have computers in Tassie ???

        • I thought Tassie is the 1st to have NBN ?

    • It warms to around 52 degrees which is considered too hot for a long life

lol, and i used to feel bad when my desktop drives hit 30 on a hot summers day …

    • take out the drive from the casing, plug it in to pc. done.

it's cheaper than to buy 2TB Seagate hdd by itself.

  • Anyone know the drive model number?

  • -1

    Double post :(

  • +2

I can really do with another ext hd but reliability issues are putting ne off this one

    • +2

Exactly Was reading about the problems with this Seagate Expansion 2tb. From what I have read the problem relates the the crummy case that Seagate uses. The drive itself is fine. So if you buy, crack open the case and use the drive as internal in your pc and chuck out the case. Although doing this will obviously void your warranty.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2PB9gZ1br4&feature=related

  • +1

Does anyone know if the case can be cracked open? I need some 2TB drives but not USB connectivity. Should solve the overheating problems as well.

    • Same here… model number of the drive itself would be good as well.

    • +1

If you mean literally cracked open then yes. I think most of these cases are sealed (not screwed together) so there might be some breakage involved in getting the drive out.

Nice deal, but I think I'll skip it. I'd rather pay an extra $10 for a bare internal drive and have warranty, my place gets too hot in summer to risk it (it would be on 24/7)

  • Had one where after some time the internal motherboard broke loose. Returned it under warranty and specifically asked for it to be repaired. After a few month a replacement was given rather than repair. Thanks Seagate, I've just lost 1TB worth of data!

    • +7

The joy of backing up your backup….

  • Good price, but I hope it's a WD not Seagate. Bad experience with seagate HDD products (some serials number has an error in production). Just search "seagate harddrive error".

    • +4

Are you kidding! Seagate will use Seagate drives for all there external drives. Just exactly what model is yet to be determined or if they can be cracked open and installed internally.

    • +5

Oh, of course Seagate will be using WD for their external drives, just the same as Western Digital use Maxtor/IBM. They never use their own drives for their own branded and packaged externals.
No one will know what drive they get until they receive it and break it open, because all drive manufacturers use 3rd party drives picked out of a claw machine and even fake the firmware, you won't know until you physically look and when you do, too late, warranty gone 'cos you opened it.
      .
      .
      .
      .
      .
      .
It's a frigging Seagate drive, what drive do you expect to be in the bloody thing???

      • Dude, relax. Where he said 'hope', he meant to say 'wish'.
Similar words really, but makes the meaning of the sentence completely different!

    • +1

I gave you a positive vote for being funny.

  • USB Powered? Surely not!?

  • +2

    From Seagate's site

Now someone more technical tell me if I can crack it open for the drive?

    • Its case looks like the same as 1TB one that you can crack open.

  • -3

I have 130GB free of 450GB on the laptop, dont know what else i use for 2TB. Unless im turn into porno and illegal download.
    Good post thou. thank you.

    • +3

I have a bodyboard and I am quite happy with it. I don't know what would I do with a dinghy… Well unless I would want to smuggle drugs or people or something illegal like that…

  • +1

What the? I just bought one from OfficeWorks yesterday for $88.

  • For 2TB external drive, $68 delivered, reputable brand (who have fantastic warranty support) what more do you want???

    Tough cowd here at OB

    • +4

Price is good definitely, but lets see if you are so keen if you lose all your data.
There's more to it than price alone. I have seen people contemplate spending huge amounts to retrieve their data on failed drives.

    • -1

      http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/01/16/barracuda_failure_pl…

Paying Seagate under warranty, for a 2nd drive to store your data on, when your 7200.11 drive fails, does not sound like "fantastic warranty support" :S

Note: 7200.11 was about 2 years ago

      • Hmmm this is an external drive.. so this is where you back up your data isn't it?? So if this crashes you still have the original??

I have found seagate to have great Warranty support not like some others

I'm sorry foundit I don't understand what you are getting at ???

  • looking to grab two and fill them into my hp server, but really want to know the model and spec for the internal disk

  • Available in-store?

    • Clearly stated on website as online only.

  • Hmm so you void the warranty opening it? And I assume you couldn't use the serial on the drive itself? Suddenly lost all appeal :|

  • +2

Wouldn't touch Seagate hdd's with a 10 foot barge pole.. Already had 5 drives in a row die less than 2 years…

  • +1

I have been burnt twice having 2 Seagate external HDD in the past. Luckily still have back up data. Sigh …

No more Seagate external HDD for me.

  • awesome price.
    i have a 1.5T expansion.

has a little fan in back.
but slow transfers make it not fun.

use it for backup purposes, rather than online storage.

also couldnt get my ps3 to recognize even with fat32.

  • They basically copied the exact same deal as the dick smith deal last month- http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/51119

Except this is $11 cheaper :)

  • thought this would be a good buy, now hesitate after reading the comments above.

i just want an external drive to supplement my laptop. 1-2 tb, usb2 suffices. i want good value. any other options? 1tb for less 50bucks?

  • And I just bought it 3 days ago for $88 :(

    • -1

I just bought it for $88 too from Officeworks just yesterday and the packaging is different. I wonder if I buy this and return this one to Officeworks for refund, would they accept it? Would anybody who had previous experience comment on it?

  • Anyone have Big W voucher codes that are still active?

  • trust me, their server will be ozbargined at 1 o'clock.

    • interesting to see how good it is. It survived the itunes BDAY5 ozbargaining last time :D

      • just tried it - no workies!

    • Right on the buzzer.

  • -2

Do you think I can use it to expand my tivo?

I think this one is different to Dick smith deal
ST320005EXA101 has a rotational speed of 5900 rpm only

    • why neg voted my reply? any reason?

  • I happened to see this secret deal last night when checking BigW specials lol

  • last time i bought the exact same, 1 TB model, the HD casing got damaged for some unknown reason after 3 months n warranty was a b|#ch… had to spend another $30 to replace it myself.
a good deal (so gave a +), but otherwise not happy abt the possible inconvenience.

  • i need this to backup my crappy $99 2tb samsung story which is bout to die. FML

  • hmm already got one from the DSE deal a couple weeks back, been working fine - but now I'm afraid to get some more because of all the bad reviews here…hmm

    • hmm I said hmmm twice..

  • +2
