    1 gram? That's bugger all…

    • Yes, I once bought one without noticing the size for a Threadripper build…. There is very little.

      • I also made the same mistake, I was like…what lol

They're really taking advantage of people. Can get way better value for money with Noctua NT-H1 paste if you know you'll need to do a few applications, the price per gram is much lower and the temperature difference is within 1-2 degrees.

      • This. Found the 10g one for $25 at Amazon US, the 3.5g (still 3.5x as much as this "Bargain") is $15 centrecom/pccasegear. I have 2 tubes of the 3.5g, it's good stuff it's not runny it's much more like a thick paste and haven't had it dry out in 2 years of use after I changed it not long ago. Noctua have great coolers and their paste doesn't let them down, I'm sure there are other high quality paste brands but this one is reasonably priced and very good.

    • Cheaper than a tinnie

    tastes nice on toast

    • Probs just right to cover one half of the crust.

    • +5

Yes, but it makes your toast go cold too quick

  • Anyone know how many applications this would cover for 8th gen? More than 2?

    • No way. I could only get 1 CPU heat spreader tinned. I had a tiny bit left but not enough and I really don’t like using a lot of thermal paste either.

      • Do you use the pea style application? Or line?

        • I spread a fine layer and then squish it down. I would work with the idea of 2 max if you are careful with the application.

      • how much are you using? I easily did 2.

    • about 2 applications. (I'm using 3600) and I'm using X style application.

  • thanks. just ordered another one

Youre better off paying ~$40 for the 11g version. Much better value.

    • Link?

      • +2

Few places have it around $40. eBay, ozgameshop

edit: btw if buying from ebay, make sure its from a reputable pc shop, as there are fakes out there apparently.

    • 11g shows as $83 for me (local stock) or imported from amazonUS for $75 (both free prime delivery)

tbh, just get the mx-4, 4g for $10 delivered for prime. if you notice the difference then great, but most wont.

      • thermal grizzly products are generally aimed at 'extreme' users, mx-4 is great value for the majority of users but if you're already paying over $700 for a CPU what's the loss in paying a bit extra for one of the best thermal compounds you can get?

personally have TG kryonaut on my delidded 8700k with a Gigabyte monoblock in custom waterloop

        • What sort of voltage/frequency/temp do you get running p95 small fft with avx?

Edit: just curious because I'm going to be delidding my 8700k this weekend

          • @DeToxin: ah sorry it's been super long since I established my OCs so dont have a ton of info at hand/ in memory BUT from a quick look at my reddit:

I've clocked it at 5.0 and it's definitely sub 1.3 voltage (iirc 1.29) and AVX I can't remember I think just default

As for temps idling is low 30s, low stress activities usually low 40s and then caps out mid 50s gaming I think

worth noting I had temp issues after my delid as I'm using a gigabyte monoblock and it wasnt seating properly but I got one of those replacement lids that is slightly fatter to accommodate for a better seat against the block

            • @Duplicity: Gotcha. I'm aiming to run 5.0 maybe with a -1avx offset. Would like to be able to run p95 and not exceed 85°.. not sure if that's reasonable on a 240mm AIO..

              Currently running 4.8 (-1avx) @ 1.18v I think (under load)

              • +1

                @DeToxin: sounds like good numbers!

Dont forget stress tests arent really comparable to real world use so doesn't really matter as long as your temps are reasonable for gaming etc :)

  • Is this good for the phat PS3 red light of death problem? If so how many will I need?

  • +4

Misread this as a ‘greasy kryonut’. I was like yes. I am in.

  • 7921 all the way, once for life. Warning: very hard to apply.

  • I was using this for a while on my CPU & GPU's and ended up swapping to Arctic MX-4 given it's 5x cheaper on average. I haven't noticed too much difference.

  • Good for laptops?

    • +4

In my experience, terrible for laptops. Kryonaut is a very thin paste and tends to suffer from "pump out" in low mounting pressure applications like laptops. I naively used it on my laptop and while temps were good in the beginning, it only lasted 3 months before my temps were hitting near 100c.

      EDIT:
Kryonaut also begins to dry out over 80c, which a high performance "gaming" laptop will usually constantly exceed under full load.

      • So what’s a better alternative?

        • 7921

        • Anything thick basically.

Personally I now use IC Diamond because it's ridiculously thick (application involves soaking the tube in hot water so you can actually squeeze it out, and even then it's more like a putty), but a lot of people would VERY strongly recommend against it because it has a nasty habit of scratching the CPU/GPU die due to the diamond dust in it (imo, this is only an issue if you try to wipe it off instead of dabbing with IPA/metho). I've been using it for over 6 months and have had absolutely zero degradation in temps, so I believe the claims I've read that it lasts years.

Alternatively, I've read a lot of recommendations for Gelid GC Extreme, Prolimatech PK3, and MasterGel Maker Nano as very thick pastes with good thermal performance without IC Diamond's scratching issues.

Unfortunately all the pastes mentioned tend to be a bit "boutique" (in Australia at least) and aren't as readily available as more popular pastes.

  • 1 gram enough for Ryzen 3700X CPU?
Want to upgrade my AMD stock Wraith cooler.

    • Yeah this is only recommended for one time application, some people have done it twice (see above).

AMD stock coolers although better than intel's, it's still nowhere as good as aftermarket coolers.

      • Yeah, I may go with water cooler.
Waiting for a deal on one of those.

  • "personally have TG kryonaut on my delidded 8700k with a Gigabyte monoblock in custom waterloop"
I had one of those but the wheels fell off….

  • Why is thermal paste so expensive? Why can't we buy a big tub for $5? Is it filled with diamonds?
