Gaming Computer Frame Rates

Help……..! I purchased this gaming computer 18 months ago for my son

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/498587

He has been complaining that his frame rates have dropped off. He plays Fortnite about 95% of the time and this is where he is having issues.

Frame rates have dropped from 240 to 120 and sometimes 80 and below
Screen resolution is set at 1920x1080
CPU temps are around 50-60deg

He has made the following changes to the PC

1) Installed water cooling
2) Installed additional RGB cooling fans
Windows has been updated

Everything else is as delivered.

Im looking for suggestions as to what could cause his drop in frame rates, Is his current setup sufficient? does he need to upgrade anything?

Please advise if I need to supply further information?

TIA

Steve

    1) Installed water cooling

Have you monitored/check temps since to confirm a successful install?

    • Temps are on average 50-60 deg

      • Is this just in windows or while in the game?

  • Update the graphics card drivers from Nvidia or AMD.

    • This has been completed

      • Did you restart the computer after the update?

        • yes

Frame rates dropped, from what to what?
    What resolution on what screen?

Make sure your monitor isn't plugged into the wrong port, i.e into the motherboard IO.

the Displayport or HDMI cable should go into your 5700XT video card. Otherwise you'd be using Intel integrated graphics as opposed to discrete GPU.

    • Plugged into correct ports and double checked

Had to update Nvidia drivers last night for sons computer as known issues causing frame rate drops on latest Fortnite patch and Windows OS

    • will get him to check those drivers are latest.

some good advice already. You should check task manager for activities that might be throttling the system.

He has been complaining that his frame rates have dropped off.

Are you sure it's happening and it's not a bad tradesman blaming his tools?

Please advise if I need to supply further information?

What were the frame rates? What are they now?

    1) Installed water cooling
    2) Installed additional RGB cooling fans

What was the purpose of installing those? Decent cooling is important if the system is overheating and/or causing throttling. RGB fans/water cooling sounds good, but performance wise, you're better off going with a higher end Noctua CPU heatsink and Noctua case fans. They look like a dogs turd, but they perform great…. but can't cry over past mistakes.

But like Godric said, it'd be worth determing if the right items were purchased and installed correctly.

I've played fortnite once, so I had to do some searching..

"And Fortnite is a CPU intensive game. So when there is a lot of building and fighting your CPU usage is very high. In a lot of cases, your performance in Fortnite is actually CPU bound and not GPU bound like a lot of other games"

His CPU: Specs: Intel i5-8500 (6 Cores, 4.6GHz)

If it's still a CPU intensive game, it's possible that the CPU (this one is a mid range CPU, but not horrible) causing the issues, but unlikely.

That being said, epic says: Recommended System Requirements
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 or AMD Radeon HD 7870 or equivalent DX11 GPU
    Video Memory: 2 GB VRAM
    Processor: Core i5-7300U 3.5 GHz
    Memory: 8 GB RAM
OS: Windows 7/8/10 64-bit or Mac OS Mojave 10.14.6

and you're beyond those specs. Perhaps there's a virus/trojan/bad driver/crappy game update or some hardware may be fritzing….. or back to the original thought of blaming their tools.

What resolution is the game being played at? If you can, try lowering the resolution. Not sure if you can lower the graphics quality. From memory, it's pretty low by default.

the Displayport or HDMI cable should go into your 5700XT video card. Otherwise you'd be using Intel integrated graphics as opposed to discrete GPU.

    This would cause performance issues.

    • Frame rates according to him were around the 200-240…..they now average about 120 and sometimes drop to 80 and below. His screen resolution is 1920x1080

It sounds like thermal throttling. Make sure the CPU waterblock is mounted correctly, and that before actually mounting it, that the coldplate has thermal paste pre-applied. Check water pump operation.

If the CPU is thermal throttling, it means its reducing it's speeds to prevent overheating and that will cause large framerate drops. CPU temp close to 100 degrees is a dead giveaway that heatsink is not properly making contact.

Other things to beware of is power cabling, ensure PCIE power cables are in tight and not simply "plugged in but not making contact". RAM should be installed correctly in alternating DIMM slots for dual channel operation and XMP profile set correctly.

Is he a competitive player? As in, one of the few earning a living playing Fortnite?

Does he have a monitor that can handle frame rates beyond 120?

The framerate goal is usually 60. Anything beyond that is a waste for most people. Unless he has a gaming monitor, he's not going to be able to display faster than 60fps anyway. If I were you, I'd check it out if there's an actual problem with the computer and fix those issues. If he's fishing for an upgrade, I'd make him wait until he gets himself a job. To put it into real world analogy. You bought him a car, and he's complaining that it's maximum speed is no longer 210kph and he can now only hit 150kph. It ain't a problem unless you have a broken car or you're a professional racecar driver…. otherwise, if he wants a Ferrari, he can finance it himself.

You haven't told us anything specific apart from "My son says frames have dropped"

What were they before? What are they now?

Have you compared current frame rates to similar pc spec benchmarks to see if it is indeed below what it should be?

    • As above….., don't have another similar computer to compare to and I am only basing this on what he tells me.

Install MSI afterburner, have is display frame rate and thermals for GPU and CPU when playing games. Probably hitting thermal cut

  • +3

If none of the above works, turn a few of the graphics settings in the game down.

Do you know if he is playing on ultra/high settings at the moment?

Also a new season came out recently (maybe 2 weeks ago I think) so there might have been some changes there that are affecting things.

If you chose the Nvidia GPU, go to your Nvidia settings (via right click desktop) and turn DSR off and see if that helps. A while ago there was an update that upscaled game resolutions to 4K.

If that doesn't work, do a RAM and GPU (separately) stress test and see how that goes.

Just reinstall windows it's probably full of shit.
    What processes start at boot?

    Installed additional RGB cooling fans

Do you mean they have lights? Is this a troll?

    • A Troll? pull ya head in.

  • When FPS drops suddenly, it is usually either temperature throttling, or RAM hitting capacity.

I wouldn't always trust the % given in task manager. Last time I upgraded was because certain games was dropping from 60 FPS to 5 FPS. Ram showed 5gb usage out of 8gb. The moment I upgraded to 16gb, ram usage jumped to 12gb and all the FPS drops stopped

  • Go the temp files for fortnite (have the Show Hidden Files checked) and delete the FortniteGame folder. The game will load just fine, it will just reset everything else and you can set the graphics settings and resolution slider to how you like and restart the game again. This helps immensely after any update for me.

Also, have they changed from performance mode to dx11/12 after the recent update? Or vice-versa?

  • In the games video settings you haven't changed frames and set them to 120fpc etc .
