Any chance of pulling a holographic Charizard?

  • How do these card games work? Is it a random assortment? Or is it the same each pack?

    • +10

Each pack has 10 cards from a set of usually 200-300 cards. Like 95% the time of the sealed pack is worth more than the contents.

    • Box the trainer boxes and tins have booster packs which are random. Starter decks have a set deck which are good for a start. They cost around twenty bucks.

    • The only way you can get value is if you bring a scale and weigh the box. As holographics weigh 0.1 or 0.2 grams more. Some people think this is unethical, but nobody will tell you off at Target.

A normal card is going to weigh approximately 1.69 grams. One the other of the spectrum is the heaviest, which are the Ultrarare cards. They weigh about 1.98 grams. Finally, the Holofoil cards weigh close to the same around as the Ultrarare cards, weighing in at 1.93 grams. The extra décor on these cards makes a difference and the proof is in the weights.

If you are feeling super evil, you can weigh for EX's and sell the booster packs with garbage on eBay.

        Unbelievable

      • +1

        It is unethical.

Just because it's common, doesn't mean it's justified. It just means there's a lot of selfish douchebags in the world.

        • +3

          Ok, tough guy.
Do you really think you're going to get them to stop by calling them names and hurting their feelings?

      • +8

modern sets can't be weighed reliably.

      • is this set even worth anything?

      • That doesn't work anymore. They addressed this cheat awhile ago

  • Hoping I can manage to get one at lunch thanks OP.

Concerned that OzScalpers will already be on there way to clear them by then though :(

  • +2

well serves me right for pre-ordering .. LOL paid $10 more… i'll have to deduct it from my sons allowance hahaha

  • Anything online yet?

  • I am new into this…do I need anything else to start play with my boy other than this Shining Fates Elite Trainer Box? Thank you!

    • +5

You cant really play with this alone. It comes with cards but probably not enough to make a singular deck due to them all being different element types.
Your better off getting 2 of the 20-30 dollar theme decks, or the "battle academy" box which comes with 3 decks and a board/tokens instructions etc.

      • Thanks, I will go to get a battle academy box.

Is this game too hard for 5yo old? My boy is a big fan of Pokemon though.

        • +2

If he can work out the switch/3ds games or pokemon go, I'm sure he can work it out. Its one of those ones which is easy, but can scale up for the hardcore nerds.

You can actually play it online for free-kinda, has paid purchases etc (has tutorials too) with an app that i think is on most tablets/pc. Doesnt support phones though from what I can tell: https://www.pokemon.com/us/pokemon-tcg/play-online/ will give you an idea of what it is like too.

          • @RI4V4N: Very useful info, thank you!

            • +1

@ox518: Just to expand on the Pokemon tcg online game. It is free-kinda, with a currency you can earn by completing quests and then use towards buying sealed (digital) packs/ decks. Once you have a good stack of cards, you can really start customising decks. There is a online digital trade system too.

That said, every physical booster pack you open has a free code inside it which is a free digital booster packs. Very cheap to buy off eBay etc but really most people practically give these away for free as most just interested in opening the physical packs. Heck I have a stack that I don't play to use.

              Food for thought.

Battle academy box is pretty awesome, we've had another starter pack and didn't quite "get it" but this set orders the cards so you are literally walked through the first few turns step by step and then you can shuffle it up and get into it. My 7 yo gets most of the aspects of it, he has ADHD as well so if your kid has the ability to concentrate for more than 5 seconds they should be fine if we are haha.

It also has 3 decks that don't go into weakness/resistance stats against each other, and no effects like burn/poison etc but the rule book does explain them if you want to take the next step.

We have a huge box full of cards that the kids have picked up over the years, but I have no idea which are legit and which are bootlegs so I'm not sure which to incorporate now lol.

    • If you actually want to play the game you're better off finding a couple of theme decks to play against eachother. Theme decks are an introductory product that provide you with a full sized deck to get playing straight away.

Things like the elite trainer box just contain booster packs to pad out your collection. If you're just after a few specific cards, you're almost always better off buying them off ebay or a TCG marketplace to get the exact cards you want rather than buying booster packs.

      • Thanks mate, will definitely get some decks!

    • If you want to start playing then I would recommend buying a couple decks. They are made for new players and well tested to have a good game. However its not a gamble in the decks because you know all the cards you're getting.

i usually just buy cheap booster boxes from ebay, mean there fake but kids dont no the difference, there just happy to open packets, there like $23 - $25 for 36 pack box if anyones interested, again fake but kids have no idea :P

    • do they collect? or do they actually play the card game?

    • AliExpress?

    • +4

As a kid it is exciting, but when all your friends are getting real stuff and they start learning how to recognise fake from real, they're going to be very disappointed that their friends have real versions. Especially if their friends can tell the difference.

You'd be better off just buying the small, real themed desks imo

    • got links to listings? i want them for myself to scratch the cardboard crack itch without putting in the money cause its all worthless at the end of the day

    • I think it is a great idea. A lot of people collect without playing, but if the kids actually want to play what does it matter to them if it is fake or real.

  • How much would this cost in 20 years if I never open it?

    • +1

I wondered the same thing 😅

      Depends on RBA policy

  • Not a really good set in my opinion. A series pokemon. Higher chance of rares but they're not great. I had one vmax from one of these cartons.

    • +2

can't be weighed mate. tried and it is inconsistent due to the different weights used in the white code cards. for example, i've pulled 3 charizard vmax's from this set so far. 2 from light weight, and another from mid weight.

Same deal with Vivid voltage and most modern sets. don't bother weighing as its not reliable at all.

      • Damn how many boxes to pull three?

      • 3? I got a wingle dhelmise vmax only

      • Your luck is crazy bro, how many packs did you go through? I've opened 98 packs so far of SF and still no Charizard… lol

  • Could someone please help me out, are these just sets of tins with pokemon cards in them, with higher chances of special cards being in them?

Just bought a pack at Eastland Melbourne. They're out on the shelves at the registers. Maybe around 10 left

The lady at my local Target Warringah Mall told me "Pokemon Cards are sold out and not for reorder" when I didn't even tell her what Pokemon cards I was after. When I asked for other stores stock, not only did she not take time to check she also told me "All stores must be sold out Pokemon Cards are not returning hits on our system". Then she followed with "No, sorry Pokemon Cards will not be replenished". If you are not willing or don't know how to check for me just say so, don't pull this nonsense. Not only are you lying to my face, you expect to believe Pokemon cards are no longer being sold at Target. I can still see the Pokemon Cards listings on Target, and can see stock in Kotara and like 5 other stores.

    • I am so sorry…..

    • i hope you told her, at least.

    • Call the Copper's lol .
I find Kmart won't give all the stock in the store whilst others have no problems .
`^ ing online stock systems as BS .

    • +1

Maybe she recognised you as the guy bringing his scale and clearing out all the heavy packs in store

      • No, its was over the phone. The real reason is my local Target is turning into a Kmart in Mid 2021. She said its not being replenished, but not because they are turning into Kmart.

  • Wow, definitely a good price, I saw some poor guy bought it for $130 at Goodgames the other day…

    • A large reseller on Ebay can buy large amounts landed using 10 % off codes and gift cards @ $83 each .

  • Called all my local targets and they had all their stock/s bought up first thing, looks like scalpers are following the Americans way of doing things

  • It says "This item is click and collect only." Item is randomly selected.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Pokemon-TCG-Shining-Fates-Elite-…

    • this ebay one is out of stock :(

  • I bought a box and have instant regret, I'll think I'll sell it at the price I bought it.

    • +2

      Why?

      • I don't play Pokemon and my son doesn't care for the Battle Academy I got him. I just read posts about how good it all is and bought one, because that is what we do on OzBargain it seems, however I don't want or need it.

        • +2

People were right, as far as Pokemon product goes this is one of their premium sets. It's almost guaranteed to go up in price so if you're still not sure about it I would at least urge you to hold on to it for a few months.

  • Two Elite Trainer Boxes available at Knox City Target store!

    • Where abouts in the store did they have it? My cousin wants to buy one!

  • This is possibly the worst western set to collect. 70cards+150 shinys/secret rares.
