DODO Electricity Offer, $20 Credit for All. 20% off Kw Rate [VIC], 10% [NSW], 12 Month Contract

06

Hi All,
I recently ran a group electricity campaign to try and drive down the cost of residential electricity by identifying and negotiating a better group deal.

We’ve seen some pretty good results with people saving up to 30% on their bills.
Everyone’s welcome to the deal, if the saving stack up, switch, if not there’s no need to go any further.

Electricity Deal (November 2011)

After a week and a bit of conversations with a number of suppliers we believe we’ve finally landed a pretty good all round deal. It’s fair to say we had mixed results when talking to suppliers, some weren’t willing to engage at all while others tried but unfortunately just couldn’t match the deal we’ve summarised for you below.

The deal unique group deal we’ve negotiated is with Dodo Electricity. Dodo is an up and coming provide who now offers electricity across all of Victoria, NSW and is now spreading into Queensland. We found Dodo to be very helpful and keen to win our businesses. As mentioned a couple of times below our contact at Dodo is happy to help you compare our deal with your current electricity provide. This will make it a lot easier for you to decide whether this deal is right for you.
My savings

We’ve now switching to the below offer and based on my calculation I’m set to save 30% on my electricity bill. I don’t generally spend a lot on electricity because my place is quite small, so the dollar amount isn’t huge for me, but if my usage remains roughly the same it should equate to at least a $300 for the year.

If you want to work out how much you’re going to save, simply contact Tyrone, our Dodo contact and he will help you calculate your potential savings. Just make sure you have a previous bill on hand.
The Dodo offer in a nutshell

20% off the standard per kw rate for Victorians and 10% off standard rates for our New South Wales counterparts. My rates per kw dropped from 20 cents to 16.6 cents
A once off $20 worth of credit for each person who switches
The contract period is for 12 months, so you’re not locked in for a lengthy period.
A $20 cancellation fee will apply if you decide to terminate your contract prior to the end of 12 month
A 10 business days cooling off period applies when you switch
Solar panel rebates do apply, so if you have solar panels make sure you ask enquire about the rates

If you decide to switch, further details and Dodo’s Terms and Conditions will be provided to you by Dodo when you establish your account. Don’t forget to read the fine print when you receive your contract details.
Who do I contact and what to say

If you want to take advantage of this offer

Contact Tyrone or Karen

They work between 11am to 8pm Mon-Fri

You can phone them on 133636 Extension 8288. If you get another sales person make sure you ask for Tyrone or Karen they’re familiar with our deal.

It’s very important that you quote our unique number it’s called a CID number. Our CID number is 5154897. Also, make sure you mention the $20 credit.
Additional information

When you call have a previously bill ready. As mentioned above, Tyron will help you calculate the savings.
Check your current supplier to see if they have a contract cancellation fee. Make sure you factor that in when calculating any savings.
Allow approximately half an hour to go through the process. It takes some time to work out your savings and to step through the switching formalities.

Finally, Thankyou

We would like to thank everyone for joining the campaign. It’s been a real experience for us. We truly hope that this deal benefits you like it has us, if so we would love to hear how much you’ve saved ([email protected]).

You never know if we have the continued support we may just decide to take on another utility provider or extend Fazzam way beyond utilities?

Do you receive commission, or just a warm fuzzy feeling?

    • +2

      A warm Fazzam feeling, maybe?

      • Nope, that's why we're different. We get no commission or benefit apart from the deal itself. It was started as a community movement to highlight dodgy electricity prices and to see if group purchasing could make a difference.

How is it up to 30% off, when the best discount is 20% for Victorians?

    • +1

that would be the 'up to' bit, lol.

agree. 20% discount for Vic, 10% discount for NSW according to Dodo details.

no sign of 30% saving except for OP's personal opinion/experience.

    • Are you just reading that from the Dodo website? If so, then I guess you are comparing the general public offer to the one being advertised here.

      • +2

No, I am reading the offer from the OP website - which apart from a $20 sign-up bonus appears to be exactly the same as I can get from going to Dodo direct!

        • Yer, you're right.

Hey Fazzam, where does the 30% example come from?

    • The 30% factors in the initial $20 credit you receive on joining. E.g. $200 bill - 20% ($40) - $20 credit = $140 which is a 30% discount.

      • So then using your numbers it's 30% off the first bill, then 20% off each subsequent bill?

That's not quite how I read your title post.

And it's only % off usage, so $200 bill does not give you 20% off the whole bill = $40 off. It only gives 20% off the usage element of the bill.

  • they get commission from sales and they also want you to donate???

    • Hi there mattgal, not sure why you think we get a commission, but as we've said in reply to Steptoe and salem above, we have no affiliation with Dodo. We're just regular people who started this campaign to try and do better for our community. Please see our FAQ - www.fazzam.com.au/faqs .

  • OP, rather than trying to get people to subscribe to see the details, why not just list the deal here with its benefits.
    then us oz-bargainers will choose.
i am a little tired of these "deals" than you need to join up to.

BTW Dodo seems to be the best deal so far for Victorians at 20% discount (16.41 c/kWh), has anyone found a "catch" with them?
    https://connectto.dodo.com/electricity/Documents/SP-AusNet.p…

  • So this is Dodo Electricity. I wonder if TPG are going to get into electricity too? Maybe a monthly flat rate for unlimited supply? Dreaming ………

most OzBaragainers hate to subscribe to find out the details, so here they are….

    ♫DODO - DODO - electricity that dies - at 10 to 20% off - electrocute yourself with DODO♫

  • +2

It is a referrer program. I doubt there was any "Dealing" with the provider done.
    Check
    http://referrer.dodo.com.au/lead/?link_id=3427&stat_id=17441…

  • The only issue i see with the dodo plan is that you get billed monthly on what they think you will use and then that gets adjusted after every 3 month actual reading.
Personally I find it annoying to not know exactly what my cost was for the three months. I was previously on a similar thing and it was difficult to see if you had a good quarter with electricity (i.e some changes you made to your electricity usage habits actually reduced your bill) or not.
The 20% saving however is significant and still tempting.

    • Does that apply to smart meters? I have a smart meter and my company (neighbourhood) is just charging whatever is on the meter.

    • actually, they debit a set amount each month and then charge more or less after the reading. so you are not billed on estimate which some companies do. In which case depending if they estimate more or less you get charged different rate/steps.

  • Dodo's "Dodo Power & Gas Price and Product Information Statement"/"Dodo Power & Gas Residential Market Offer - 01 July 2011":

We may vary your tariffs and charges by providing you notice of that change
    :
The ETF for all Term contracts is $20.00.

If I have to pay a penalty (to Dodo) for breaking my part ("early termination") of the contract why isn't Dodo paying a penalty (to me) for any subsequent rate changes?

  • also note that it is only a discount against usage, not connection/supply.
people should check their bills to see what percentage is usage versus supply.

  • I am also with Dodo for the past 4 months. I find it confusing because they charge you a set amount, yet they have not sent me a bill yet so I do not know how much electricity I consumed. I also have Solar panels installed and found that the amount they credit you with solar is 4 cents less than what AGL electricity is crediting me.

    • Hw many kW are you exporting to the grid.
I have a 2kW solar system and rarely would be exporting (using about 43kW per day)so i still have my old meter.
I calculated that just the consumption from my panels i save about $1 per day….. but is it really worth it?

  • Looks a bit like 'Fazzam' might have just "Fizzled"

  • Hi OP, so what's the "the standard per kw rate for Victorians"?
if i'm with a company which provide a better rate then the standard do I still get 20% off that rate?

    • I think it's a bit more complicated as Victoria's electricity market is deregulated.

      http://www.switchwise.com.au/electricity/melbourne-vic/

Electric prices usually vary depending upon where you live. Each of the five distributors have different price structures meaning that you will pay different electricity rates even with the same supplier. These price structures are different to reflect differences in the cost of operating and maintaining the network. Size, age, population density and the like are all factors that contribute to different costs.

Power prices also vary depending upon the type of meter you have at your home. Many homes have single-rate meters, which means you pay the same price per kWh regardless of when you use electricity. Some households have off-peak meters tied to specific appliances such as hot water or storage heating that work only at night time; in such cases they pay a lower price for this type of usage. However, the Victorian Government has mandated that all existing meters be replaced by time-of-use meters (also known as smart meters) over the next four years. Smart meters would enable electricity providers to set prices on an hourly basis to encourage you to use less during peak times. However, it would in practice be very difficult for power companies to bill you in such small intervals.

      • Correct. In each of the five distribution areas in Victoria, each retailer publishes its standard rates in the Victorian Government Gazette.

It's misleading to refer to "the standard per kw rate for Victorians" without qualification - because there is no such thing. Besides the fact that it's per kWh not per kw.

If you look for eaxmple at https://connectto.dodo.com/electricity/Documents/CitiPower.p… you will see that what's being offered is a percent for pay on time off Dodo's own standard rate for usage - not off the fixed charge.

And 20% off Dodo's standard rate isn't the same as 20% off AGL's standard rate or Origin's standard rate etc.

The discounts are pay on time discounts. With most energy retailers, when you miss paying one bill on time, you lose the discount on that bill, but then get the discount on future bills as normal if you pay them on time.

    Not so with Dodo.

    Read http://www.dodo.com/media/3745/markettermsandconditions.pdf

    9.6(v) If a. You fail to pay the full amount of Your bill by the due date;
or b. Your payment is dishonoured or reversed and You
otherwise fail to pay the full amount of Your bill by the due
date, any Pay on Time Discount applicable to that bill will
be void and You must pay the non-discounted Standard
Usage Payment specified on Your bill. We may also reduce
Your Pay ornTime Discount if You fail to pay each regular
fixed payment amount on or by each regular payment
date occurring during the Billing Cycle.

Note that last sentence - they can reduce your Pay on Time Discount (to zero) in your contract if you miss one payment.

    Note also:

    http://www.dodo.com/electricity/electricity/electricty-faq/#…
How do I pay my Dodo Power & Gas account?
Dodo Power & Gas understands that paying your accounts in one payment can at times be a drain on finances. With this in mind, Dodo Power & Gas will make monthly instalment deductions from your bank account or credit card to minimise the balance you need to pay each time a bill is issued.

When you agree to a market contract with Dodo Power & Gas, you also agree to pay monthly instalments by direct debit from your bank account or credit card. We will estimate your instalments based on your previous bills or based on some simple questions if you do not have a billing history at your property.

You have to pay this way.

    Additional Charges:
Credit Card payments at no cost.
Direct Debit payments cost $1.10 per transaction
    (GST inclusive)
Posted Paper bills cost $$1.00 per transaction
    (GST inclusive)
Dishonoured Payment Fee of $9.50 (GST inclusive).

So you get a $9.50 fee if one of your payments fails - as well as also probably losing entitlement to all future discounts.

    Is this really a bargain?

    • I guess you should pay your bills on time then.
My understanding of that seems that they will just penalise you if you don't pay your bill on time, which sounds perfectly reasonable to me.
I am having difficulty in finding their rates on the website, without providing an address. Makes it difficult to compare to similar prices and hence work out whether it is a bargain or not.

      • If you can be sure you will always pay every bill on time, then maybe you could consider the deal.

You should just have to enter your postcode, not your full address.

Go to https://connectto.dodo.com/electricity/PlanSelection.aspx and Click here for general Price and Plan information. under the map.

You might then have to quote the OP's ID when you sign up to get the extra $20 if you actually want to sign up.

        • I live in NSW and was just curious because I work in the electricity industry.
When I entered a random postcode in Melbourne to compare prices it prompted me for an exact address and forms of usage, which I was too lazy to fill it all in just for interests sake.
It would be nicer to have a table or something of electricity prices for easy comparison.

      • What random postcode? Maybe the postcode didn't exist.

3000 for Melb CBD works fine, for example.

  • Dodo. Just the name gives me trouble. Dodos were a species that never learned to fear man. They apparently tasted terrible, but were so easy to hunt they became extinct within about 100 years after encountering their first white man. To quote Wikipedia, "ts name has subsequently become associated with the notion of extinction and obsolescence".

I don't want a company that thinks an association with that is a good thing to be signed up to keep my computer powered.

Oh, and the Internet company doesn't have a particularly good name.

    • They just do the billing anyway. Your electricity is still provided by your current provider (Origin for Sydney West). Incidentally, if you call your current billing provider and inform them you are transferring to Dodo because of the 10% discount, they will match the discount !! That's what happened to me with Integral Energy. I still went to Dodo because Integral increased my rates by 2 cents/kwh when I got solar panels installed and Dodo was already cheaper by 2 cents/kwh then.

      • Hi im thinkg to go with Dodo, could you please help me with some questions.
How long you have been with Dodo so far ?
What are the troubles that they 'give' you so far ?
I heard someone said their power was cut for couple hours.
