  • Is this the one that only works with Galaxy phones?

  • +2

For those wondering, the battery is replaceable (Single CR2032).

Also the new Galaxy SmartTag+ was just announced, which has Ultrawide Band (UWB) support and AR visual guidance

Note: The new Galaxy SmartTag+ is only useful for phone with UWB technology, which are limited to Galaxy Note20 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold2, Galaxy S21+, Galaxy S21 Ultra.

    • Any idea for those families with a (regular) S21 and an S21 Ultra if the SmartTag+ will still work with both (obviously not using the UWB as it is not found in the S21).

      • Might as well go for the regular tag (this deal) as there's no point paying more for a feature you can't access.

PS: The Galaxy SmartTag+ is both BLE- and UWB-enabled, so will work with both device.

        • Thanks - the backward compatibility was the question.

The UWB can be used on the Ultra so would be worth the upgrade. Just wanted to make sure if it still works if the Ultra user is out of the house :)

Doesn't say anything about distance radius from the tag that it works on.

    • This tag uses BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) tracker, meaning it does not run on GPS but rather sends signals to nearby Galaxy devices to determine its location on the SmartThings Find app.

The tracker is limited to Bluetooth Range and nearby Galaxy devices, so not the best long distance tracker…

      • sends signals to nearby Galaxy devices

Is there any way to check this for a given area? Assuming I can't tell device details from a bluetooth list. And this would pickup Galaxy devices without needing to pair etc.

        • Sorry don't own a tag, so no idea on the app interface.

  • I'm trying to understand this..

So let's say I've lost my keys with one of these on it 100km away. How do these work? Can I locate my keys? It doesn't use GPS so it connects to a nearby galaxy device?

Or does this tag need to be within distance of your phone?

"What really puts the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag ahead of other portable trackers is the company’s current footprint in the industry. The SmartTag isn’t only being tracked by your smartphone, but also by any other Samsung device out there that has the SmartThings app installed. Other Samsung handsets will connect to the tracker in the background via Bluetooth LE. If a Samsung user walks by your tracker, the location will be updated. Having this feature is huge considering Samsung continues to dominate the smartphone market."

      • "Having this feature is huge"

Hugely scary to anyone concerned about privacy

        • this is how Tile works. Tile relies on a community that builds an invisible mesh system.

      • How many Samsung users actually have this SmartThings app installed? Seems like a deal breaker to me as the whole point is leveraging their existing customer base.

      • Eh that doesn't really compare to something like Telstra Locator which uses anyone with the Telstra app who hasn't opted out to find bluetooth devices

    • It has the location of the last place the app could connect via Bluetooth, so, you could find it anywhere on earth as long as you had your mobile with you when you lost it.

  • why do people need this? do people really lose their things that much?

I keep losing money with OzBargain deals posted.

      • The tag may help: "Thanks to Galaxy SmartTags, finding lost items is smart and simple" :-p

    • Sounds like criticism more than a question.

I mean, yeah. I have ADHD so I always accidentally put things down then forget that I have. For high value items like my keys, these are pretty invaluable.

  • how does this compare to something like Tile

    • If I remember it correctly, Tile cannot replace its own batteries but Samsung ones can. This might be better off in the long run.

      • Newer Tile Model now has replaceable battery.

The Samsung Tag requires you to have a Samsung Galaxy Device.

  • +2

Tile Mate 2018 & 2020 plus Tile pro have a replaceable battery, older models apparently don't vs.
Samsung SmartTag's battery is also replaceable

Sticker has a 150 ft or 46m range, Slim and Mate each have a range of 200 ft or 61m & Pro measuring 400 ft or 122 m vs.
Samsung SmartTag's range is up to 130 yards or about 118m

Tile requires the Tile app (iOS and Android) with an additional (optional) premium subscription available vs.
Samsung SmartTag which requires a Samsung Galaxy Phone running the SmartThings app

Both Tile and Smasung SmartTag don't have GPS inbuilt, instead rely on their own "network" when out of range of your linked device:
Tile = updated location when other phone's running the Tile app are in range
Samsung SmartTag = updated location when other Samsung Galaxy devices are in range
(both do so anonymously - or so we are told)
IMO, I know a lot more people (especially after the past few weeks) having a Samsung Galaxy phone than people running the Tile app on their phones

That's the best info I could find, which I used to pull the trigger on this deal.

  • Can someone explain why samsung doesn't sell this in their official store?

  • Anyone know if this would work for something like pet tracking? In a suburban metropolitan area with a lot of Samsung users. Not sure how many have the SmartThings app however…
