Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012 --- A $12.95 for Next 24 Hours

100

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012 is a powerful antivirus engine which aims to keep your PC free of malware.

The program supports multiple scan types. The Critical Areas Scan examines just the files that are loaded when Windows boots, for the best performance; a Full Scan checks everything; and the Vulnerability Scan reports on potential problems with your applications or Windows settings which could be exploited by attackers. Each of these can be launched manually, or scheduled to run whenever you like, and by default Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012 will also scan your PC whenever it's idle, so detecting threats more quickly while minimising any performance impact on your system.

You also get strong real-time protection, which eliminates malware before it can do any real harm. So the program will scan files as they're accessed, for instance, as well as all incoming and outgoing emails (POP3, SMTP, IMAP, MAPI and NNTP protocols are supported) and instant messaging attachments. While browsing protection sees Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012 check the sites you visit for signs of malware or phishing frauds, as well as preventing Internet Explorer from running dangerous scripts.

The program includes a host of useful bonus tools. There's a virtual keyboard, for instance, which allows you to enter user names, passwords or other confidential information without it being intercepted by keyloggers; a Privacy Cleaner clears away your recent Windows, internet and application histories; the Browser Configuration module reports on problems with your Internet Explorer settings; and the Windows Troubleshooting section will search for damaged settings that might have been caused by malware, and help you to repair them.

And a lengthy list of improvements in this version means the program is now more effective than ever. Cloud protection is enhanced, for instance, and rootkit detection more efficient; better self-protection makes it even more difficult for malware to disable antivirus detection; Anti-Virus 2012 is able to roll back even more application changes, reversing whatever damage malware might have caused; and various interface changes, including touch screen support, mean all the program's functions are very easy to access and use.

When people downvote or negatively comment on Internet Security packages because free AV exists, I generally disagree with them on the basis the paid software does a lot more than the free AV.

But this isn't an Internet Security package. It's just AV. Meh.

    • I agree with this but what I do at home is just use MSE + I scan my computer once a week with hijack this and then see if there is anything suss.

    • I wouldn't buy a solution because it "does more" unless there is very specific functionality thats needed. It's not hard to use two or three apps to cover most of what these suites would do.

Personally, its about whether the protection this offers is likely to be better than the free solutions.

      • At a personal level, sure. I personally don't use any AV because it's unnecessary for me as I know how to avoid getting viruses & malware. I do run regular scans to be on the safe side and unsurprisingly they never find anything (unless you count cookies, which you shouldn't in the majority of cases).

But not everyone can or should do that. Most people need a simple, single solution they don't have to worry about.

    • Freeware AV & Spyware apps are supposed to be a layer of protection in a complete defensive suite.

They are not designed to be the be-all and end-all of malicious code prevention.

People are placing too much emphasis on Anti-Virus anyway, which is a big false sense of security.

A properly-configured hardware firewall will render trojans redundant, prevent port scans for vulnerabilities, prevent denial of connectivity and prevent your PC from unwittingly becoming part of a botnet, thereby eliminating a huge percentage of the most common forms of attack.

I don't even count malicious e-mail attachments or Flash/Java-hijacking as valid threats to the average PC user since pretty much everyone should be smart enough to avoid these incredibly hackneyed means of delivery.

Is there any advantage over Free options such as MS Essentials?

    • +2

Microsoft Security Essentials is certainly a good product but is quite basic (there's no harm in that as long as you understand what limitations there are).

Why would you pay for something else?

      1. Paid packages have the AV signatures updated more frequently, several times intra-day (MSE doesn't do that)

      2. Paid packages will usually scan inbound/outbound e-mails in Outlook and other mail clients (MSE doesn't do that)

      3. Paid packages usually provide protection from dangerous code on websites - usually a site that is a mis-key of a popular one (MSE doesn't do that)

      4. Paid packages that are suites will have phishing protection, personal information protection et cetera but mostly (in my experience) they are bloatware. (MSE is lean and mean)

      5. Paid packages will often have the ability to create a boot disc or boot USB key that can be used without running the operating system. This allows better detection of things like root kits. Microsoft is getting there with a program they have in beta called "Windows Defender Offline". At this point it only checks for malware.

The upshot of all this is that if you are sensible and tech-savvy, then you can get by with MSE.

Not sure why people keep recommending MSE, I'm assuming either because it's free or they're too lazy to do some in-depth reading:
      http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/latest_comparative/index
Or they just like the fact there are virtually NO parameters to configure.

MSE scores well below other freeware alternatives like Lavasoft's Ad-Aware, AVG, Avira Free and Avast Free.

Me personally, I chose ESET for AV, MBAM for Spyware and Comodo for a Software Firewall. Couple that with a hardware firewall on a decent-brand router and you're bullet-proof.

Everything else is just a placebo and a false sense of security and I've run the gamut of AV/Spyware/Firewall apps.

how about posting something else that is not just copied pasted with minimum worth?
Eg. a better OP would post the subscription period, amount of machine included.
    Price in title is insufficient!

    Another free (promo) - http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/61390

He is better than you who just complain

Hmm, not sure if its much better than Microsoft Security Essentials which is pretty efficient & doesn't cause any slowdown/crashes
