  • 70g Biltong for $6.99

That works out at $99.86 /kg

    • Think ive seen biltong sold at market stalls at 100g for $20, so i guess thats a fair price?

      • +4

Hi folks, our 70g bag is typically sold for $11.95 in store. We use sustainable, organic beef sourced from OBE Organic and Provenir (Australia's first mobile on-farm abattoir). These suppliers produce beef that is best for the land, animal and people's health.

        OBE Organic - https://www.obeorganic.com/
        Provenir - https://provenir.com.au/

65-75-ish for kg is reasonable plus delivery, 100 is way too much

        • +3

@DainB we do have bulk rates on our website that are competitive with that rate eg. unsliced biltong steaks at $66.50 per Kg delivered if you buy more than 2Kg.

We are not able to offer such a low per KG rate for a single 70g quantity as packaging costs are higher relative to ingredient costs for such small bag sizes.

You won't find another 70g biltong at a $6.99 in store that uses the same quality meat we use. This is a great entry level price for anyone looking to test the waters.

I'd encourage people to look at our many 5-star product and Google reviews when considering the value of this deal.

          • @tom-barbellfoods: That's good to know, I find sliced packaged biltong always tastes a bit off and 66/kg for bulk unsliced from website is a really good price, so most certainly will give it a go.

Good luck with your Aldi promo.

            • @[Deactivated]: @tom-barbellfoods - what makes the pre packed biltong taste funny ?

Does the packed biltong have any fat ?

              • @Priester-Aus: I don't know, to me even biltong I sliced myself tastes different after few days, I can't explain, it's just a different taste, maybe raw meat oxidise or something.

          • @tom-barbellfoods: Good to see you guys are doing well from your humble beginnings at the canberra markets.

      • $200/kg for biltong is STUPIDLY expensive. I have NEVER seen it for that price except in those tiny bags you might get at a servo or something.

Around $70-85/kg is the general price I would see biltong at South African shops, butchers etc.

Anything more than $85/kg is getting pretty dear.

I hate it when they put Bilton and Jerky in the same sentence.. But yea this is expensive. I always buy this at $65/kg from any saffa shop

  • +2

every time there's a jerky/biltong post you're all focused on the price per kg, how about considering the taste? if you're that fussed just go chew on car tyres, they're free if you can sneak into a carpark after dark

    • +1

This is ozbargain of course price is a factor.

    • Are they free range tyres?

    • Organic beef doesn't make a huge difference just massive cost. You can have quality beef but no organic 'tag' which is very good value.

Only reason to use organic is the marketing factor and justify your price compared to average brands.

I agree, you can get good quality, nutritious beef that is farmed in a way that is good for the environment, the animal's welfare without an organic certification.

The problem is that without an organic certification or thorough research into the provenance of a meat source, it is very hard for the average consumer to distinguish quality beef from the mono-cropped grain-fed beef that is causing desertification of the Australian landscape.

In short, all our beef is densely grazed and moved frequently, which builds up top soil instead of removing it, resulting in more carbon being stored back in the soil instead of our atmosphere, and more water being captured/absorbed where it falls (making for a landscape more resilient to drought).

Provenir are also trailblazers when it comes to animal welfare in the cattle industry. Instead of the animal being transported in a truck for a number of days to an abattoir, Provenir come to the farm where the cattle are raised. This allows the animal to remain in a familiar, low stress environment up until slaughter.

As for the nutritional differences between grain-fed beef and grass-fed beef, existing research seems to suggest that grass-fed beef is marginally more nutrient dense than grain-fed beef. I'm not going to be a charlatan here and tell you they are miles apart when it comes to nutrition. If you can't afford grass-fed and finished beef, you are better off eating some grain-fed beef instead of no red meat at all.

Don't see why you have to buy in bulk to get a better price. Making this at home is around $30/kg and it is super easy. Buying it is at most $70/kg but I've also noticed some shops freezes them and then take it out when they need it. This makes it very greasy when you cut it and its out for a day.

You mention its organic etc.. what cut do you use to make the biltong and why call droewors meat sticks :)

  • I've gone through a few bags of meat sticks from their site. Highly recommend if you are keto or just keeping carbs down as a snack. Taste great and very satiating.

  • Took me a while to find these this morning. Was surprised to find them in the pet section. So Aldi clearly sees them as pet food. I then was not sure if they were for human consumption so had to read the package in detail and check their website. There were plenty left and this would most likely be because they have been placed in the wrong place as people would think that they would be a treat for their pets.

I would advise the OP to contact Aldi and get them moved ASAP to the correct place in the store.

    • that is super expensive pet food lol

    • @Rodo: thanks for this feedback. Really appreciate it. Do you know which store this was in. I'll follow up with the store ASAP and get it moved to a better location.

      • Menai but I'd expect this would be similarly placed in other stores.

        • Thanks mate. Yeah we've heard this feedback from a couple of other customers. About 10% of stores seem to have this issue. We are trying to get on top of it. Appreciate your help.

  • I could only find the coriander flavour meat sticks at ALDI. Is this the only one they are stocking?

  • Tried a pack (biltong) today, wouldn't recommend. Very tough and the flavor isn't that great either.
