Good price for the CPU, but the Intel motherboards are soooo expensive. Also the motherboard compatibility is appalling.

    • motherboard compatibility is appalling.

      What you mean by this?

      Intel motherboards are soooo expensiv
      can you give some example
and how it compares to a similar AMD board + cpu?

      • I can run on my B450 Ryzen 1 to Ryzen 5, I do not need to change anything just update bios, pick up a CPU, drop it in. Even the first AMD boards can run Ryzen 1 to 3. Almost every time you buy an Intel CPU you have to buy a new MB (last 4 gens if I am not mistaken). Not all 8th gen boards could run gen 9th, none of the gen 9th could run gen 10, almost no gen 10 motherboards can run gen 11. So for me it is a hard pass…. Also this CPU is better and the same price with the Ryzen 5600x, but to take advantage of it you have to buy a $250+ motherboard, you can run the 5600x on a $60 refurbished MB (and it will not act as a heater either).

      • Even the cheapest AMD board allows full Memory OC, usage of PBO, also all B350/B450/B550 allows CPU OC as well.

Intel: if you want full OC you need to get Z490/Z590, if you want Memory OC only then B560

say getting a 11600k with b560, you are limited to all core turbo 4.6Ghz, and 1 core turbo 4.9Ghz, with Windows 10's default task scheduler which tends to let all core work evenly, you hardly see single core boost. With B560 which locked CPU frequency, you are basically stuck with 4.6Ghz.

On AMD side you can go to town with b450/b550, PBO for the best single core performance, or all core OC for best multicore performance, your call.

Even if you don't want to OC, you can buy cheap B550 with VRM heatsink as low as $120 (B550m S2H), intel you looking at around $160 to start with. Bare in mind Intel draws more power and offer slightly less performance than AMD equivalent even after considering CPU/mobo price (3300x vs 10100f, 5600x vs 11600k, 5800x vs 11700k, 5900x vs nothing, 5950x vs nothing) with little exception (3600 vs 10400f)

    • AMD's RAM compatibility has traditionally been worse than Intel's. That's one major thing not spoken about here yet. To the masses that don't overclock, and all the systems going out there to 'normal people', this makes a difference to system builders.

Each has their pluses and minuses.

  • Anyone know what the cheapest motherboard to go with this CPU that has 10gbe LAN?

    • +2

Gigabyte Z590 AORUS MASTER around $600-$650. Better to find a cheap $300~ Z590 or a $200~ B560 chipset motherboard if you ain't going to OC, then getting a PCI-E 10Gbit card.

      • Ahh good point. Can you recommend any good value ones that have 2.5gbe LAN instead?

        • +2

MSI MAG Z590 TOMAHAWK WIFI, around 350-400~, comes with a 2.5Gbit, and an Intel Wifi 6e AX210.

And just in time for winter πŸ™ƒ

  • +1

Ahh looks like it was a price error, it's coming up as $628.00 now unless others still see it heaps cheaper?

    • +1

      Yep they've just jacked it…

  • Is the 11th gen much better then the 10th

    • +1

11th gen i5 is good. Not that the 11th gen i7/i9 are not better they are just not very efficient but faster than this. 10th gen non-overclocked is good value if you must have intel. The k in this edition is a β€œmeh” upgrade, not worth it to most people.

I think this is on par with 9th gen Intel, really not much difference at all

looks like coles logo on the box
