$5 Monthly Incentive Payout (was $2.50, Free Membership Required) @ Nielsen Broadband Panel

480

The Nielsen Broadband Panel has changed their incentive from $2.5 per month to $5 per month.

I reckon that's a fair deal for participating in their panel.

I joined last week so I'm waiting to see how it goes.

See previous deal if you require a deeper explanation of what this deal is. You will need to take up / have taken up the previous deal in order to receive monthly incentive payouts.

Mod note: OP is associated with the deal and has sockpuppeted.

  • Better incentive. Thumbs up

  • I think it's pretty good right now, I was one of the last properties to receive nbn.

    • Don’t give that away for free

  • +9

    $4000 FTTP upgrade quote / $5 per month = 800 months and I get FTTP! woot! :)

  • $5 is more like it. $2.50 was too little.

  • What are our obligations to join their panel?

  • mods: isn't it's time to add Nielsen referrals to OzB?

    • Nielsen Panel has been added to our referral system now.

Note that the referral program only gives the referrer credit, there's no additional bonus given to the referee.

The email you received has been worded to give the impression that the new signups must be referred to get a $30 bonus after the 4th week but that's actually just the standard payout.

  • "Thank you for interest. Registration to Nielsen Broadband Panel is currently limited to only by invitation."

    What am I missing?

    • +1

Damn I kept getting calls from Nielsen and I just hung up on them. Maybe was an invite

  • Left the referral box empty and successfully signed up. It even detected the SamKnows box I have plugged in. They say they'll contact me at some stage to verify the phone number, but otherwise good to go.

    • +4

Phone call? Human interaction? No way

  • Sign up controversy aside, I read the linked deal on data security fears. It appears this just needs internet access. Anyone tried running it in a separate wireless network with no IP routes to the in-home 'real' network? I believe it is possible with my router, but $5 a month isn't worth data breach risks in loose T&C wording

    • +2

it needs ethernet and doesn't use WiFi at all

Their setup diagrams have it positioned "man in the middle" style, but you can plug it in at the end of the chain and have nothing plugged into it.

I did try putting it on a VLAN with interweb access but isolated from everything else, but it broke the speed checking function from my PC, strangely even with my PC added into the same VLAN. I assume that's operator error on my part screwing up the 802.1Q VLAN setup somehow

      • Thanks. I might give this a try and will post if I find a good solution

I’m more interested in understanding how they recoup that $60a year they pay. You know the old saying, if you’re not sure what the product is you are probably the product.

    Can someone explain?

    • For the TV ratings we're funded by the networks and that is who ultimately pays for the incentives there.
Whoever is wanting the speed info, NBN presumably, would be doing likewise.

      • Whoever is wanting the speed info, NBN presumably, would be doing likewise.

This is available on the ACCC report, which is why I am all the more baffled, and skeptical.

  • Is a referral required to obtain this deal?

    • No "Referrer Code" is optional in the form.

  • Does it require nbn connection? Currently with TPG's non-nbn FTTP.

    • Who is eligible to join?

Anyone in Australia can sign up. All you need is:

      • subscription to fixed Internet service
      • Some space next to your router for a Whitebox

      Source: https://nbn-nielsenpanel.com/faq

  • In short… We selling our privacy for $5. They wjll keep eyes on what you watch, what you buy… And what you do online.

    • Read their policies. It isn't a MITM device.

      • On their home page

Nielsen is a professional research company and the world's leading provider of media and marketing information. Our mission is to learn about what people watch, listen to, and buy, as well as what they do online.

    • What you watch is a handled by a separate department.

  • Would the $5 even cover the electricity usage?

    • $5 is a lot of electricity…

      It’s about .25 x 20kwh =$5.

20kwh is a lot per month for a small device.

      • The black one is just a TP link router with custom f/w

  • I signed up for the deal when it was last posted, setup and entire process was easy. Got my $30 first month bonus and going to continue having it connected :)

    Doesn't affect internet speeds.

    • Do you have the power consumption specs from the power adapter of the whitebox?

      • +2

        Samknows Whitebox 8.0
        Model: SK-WB8+
        DC: 12V 2A

Not sure if that’s what you’re looking for but hopefully it helps

  • I've been on this panel for a few months now, and I can say that it is quite alright. Didn't require an invite or anything.

I think you can just directly sign up without a code or anything like that, as long as ur using an AU IP address.

Anyways, I feel it's quite a reasonable deal to just plug a device in and do some speed tests.

  • mod's: as Nielsen is not listed under "Merchants included in System"
that wouldn't mean that posting referrals or invitations for PM is encouraged, true?
    Like 3 above?

I assume they record all the Internet sites you browse. I like how they call it a white box, when really it's a Black Box!

    • You assumed wrong. Not a MITM device.

    • The black TP Link has been added as an alternative to. the white box

  • Looking at the installation instructions, it appears I have to disconnect my existing wired devices from my existing router and run them through this box. Is that the case?

I know they claim privacy but that effectively monitor my data.

That seems odd when they can't monitor WiFi devices.

    • +2

Thats how they recommend you install it (so it won't run tests while your internet is in use) however you do not have to run it like this.

    • People's wifi performance isn't really in the scope of NBN speeds I don't think. They'd only interested in the speed to(and from) the house.

      • Which is why I don't get the purpose of all the antenna on the white box. Especially when the box is no longer just a rebranded tplink router.

  • Running an OpenWrt router and use a LAN port to connect to "whitebox" (in reality, an Archer C7 or C9 or something). I keep my wired devices plugged directly into router.

  • Do you get to keep device?
What happened if you stop after 3 month, do you have to return it?

    • From what I was told over the phone, they do say the device belongs to Nielsen and if you wish to withdraw, you need to return it to them (No idea about the process on that)

      • They send you a prepaid Austpost satchel to return it. Did it with mine when I had a defective device.

  • does it have to be NBN or is TPG FTTB eligible?

  • Where do i find my referral code? Does it show it after you have the phone call or have the device fully installed?

  • Please be sceptical about this - attaching an unknown device to your network just for $5 a month is not a smart move.
Your privacy is not worth $5.
    Think twice ozbargainers.

    • +1

What privacy? Your internet speed is that private? There are ways to set the device up so it has no access to anything else on your network.

      • The intention of the company is to capture internet speed and all that basic jazz, sure. But what's to say those devices don't become compromised and are used for more nefarious purposes? And what's to say that the company itself isn't also capturing more data than they want you to know about like browsing history?

You can segment it away from your main network but at the end of the day it's still an unknown device in your internal LAN. And they mightn't pay you if they can't see other devices in your internal network.

  • will it work with a NBN in contact voice service only? if you turn off the modem and power before sleep and then back on in the morning matter ? or does the white box need to be powered on all the time consuming electricy?

  • I did my telephone interview late on Friday arvo and just got a shipping advice this morning.

    • Given I'm in Perth, I'm pleasantly surprised to see that my box is scheduled to be delivered today!

    • My box arrived and is installed. My account doesn't reflect that. It's still stuck on "Device Dispatched".

      • +1

I've now completed all the steps and have earned 160 points ($16) after the first week.

        • +1

Great. Mine's stuck to ‘Application Installed’ Step 7. Not sure what to do from here??

          • @kelasen: Same here, I have no idea what to do next. Don't quite understand what the 'application' is, either

            • @Last Seen: I have even downloaded the app and have done the speed test within the app and from browser as well but the status is still stuck at ‘Application Installed’.
When did you install the white box?

              • @kelasen: Hmm, that's weird. Maybe they like to confirm a few times before they advance you.
Tuesday night installation, in my case.
Notified of 70 bonus points, this morning.
Finally found the mobile app. Browser based test failed but the app's included test seemed to finish ok.
Nielsen portal still shows I'm up to the app stage so I think I'll just leave it awhile

                • +1

@Last Seen: It was Tuesday evening installation for me as well, still on 100 points and step 7. I guess let’s wait for sometime and see how we go.

          • @kelasen: I had to raise a support ticket to get past that stage. They replied and said they had an issue and manually advanced me.

            • @comphelp: Oh great. Thanks for letting me know. Will do the same.

              • @kelasen: Did you email them for support ticket as for me it's been 4 days and no response :(

                • @kelasen: Yes, email seems to be the only way to get a reply. No idea what happens to form submissions.

        • Got my message saying I've been in for 3 weeks and earned another 50 points.

          • +1

@comphelp: That’s great. Eventually they picked up the phone for me and explained that I am stuck on step 7. They asked me to send the screen shot and I hope it gets fixed soon. Still stuck on 130 points so far

          • +1

@comphelp: Finally got the application installed email. Total points 200 now.

            • @kelasen: Awesome. I'm on 250.

            • @kelasen: 300 Points. That completes my first month. Now I go back to earning 50 points per month.

  • +1

Something to note is that you don't get money, you get points. The points are then redeemed for various rewards. Most of which were no use to me. If you are signing up, make sure you actually want the rewards.

    • Their tv ratings redemptions are for various store gift cards of your choosing. Hopefully it's the same with this.

      • Once you sign up you can log in and see the gift cards. It's probably very similar.

  • Better be worth it, Just got the call then.. :D

  • Anyone have their phone number, received a text that they tried to call me for verification and the number on text doesn’t work 😕

    • Try (02) 8873 7000? They use a range of (02) 8873 7xxx.

      • Thanks a lot. I tried several numbers in that series but no luck. The number on the SMS was 0288737383 but the call doesn’t go through

        • +1

          (02) 8873 7391 is an exact number they use but probably only for outbound calls.

    • +1
  • So many antennas.

  • The white box keeps timing out my TV.
