Herman Miller - Embody ($1630) & Aeron ($1590) @ LivingEdge

2470

Hi all,

Noticed there was a 'deal' on the HM Aeron but got taken down yesterday. Looks like the deal is back up?

Aeron - $1590 (https://livingedge.com.au/shop-in-stock/herman_miller-aeron_…)
Embody - $1630 (https://livingedge.com.au/chairs/office-chairs/herman_miller…)

If you are familiar with the Embody's pricing, you'll know this is a crazy discount (quick glance, sees pricing at $2K min for the Embody).

I just visited my local Living Edge and put a deposit on the Embody, ETA end of June/early July.

I was informed that the sale will end on June 30.

Good luck, sorry this is my first post - hope it comes out OK!

UPDATE 16/06/2021

I received the below update from Living Edge. Not ideal, but I'll probably just keep my order in. Keep this in mind if you are considering ordering.

We have recently been advised of another COVID-19 outbreak in the Guangdong district. This has shut down the shipping line without notice and our containers never left.

All our Embody stock that was due to arrive in mid-July has now been pushed back to mid-September.

  • Is embody the better veresion of the aeron?

I find chair with big bottom bits annoying/like seat cushions.

    • Not really a fair comparison as one is mesh (aeron) whilst the other is cushion (embody). I think it comes down to personal preference. Best to test out in person if you can

  • I love my Embody so much there's 3 in the house. Meanwhile there's only 2 Aeron's (…3 if you count the 20 year old one with broken mesh).

  • I wish the deal included the black colour option. Not a fan of graphite

    • You can’t get the frame or base in black, graphite is the closest you’re going to get. It looks black in person anyways. The fabric, however, is black black.

      • I havent seen the embody, but the photo of Aeron is black but what you get is graphite. Aeron black is custom and more expensive

  • +3

I paid well over $2k 15 years ago for my current Embody (had to import it at the at the time), best investment I ever made for my office space. Starting to look a little worn but the mechanism and chair itself is still perfect and I am not a small person, 6 foot 4 and 120kg.

  • +2

I love Ozbargain, on one hand you have 'bargain' deals saving 25 cents on stationary getting 200 upvotes

    Then you have this…

    Never change OZB!

    • +1

Those 25 cent savings add up!

    • Yeah then you have this, super comfortable chairs and people concerned about their comfort levels and posture on a chair they could and likely will be sitting in for many hours at a time over many years of use.

    • +2

You forgot all the pitchforks were out in force against Living Edge yesterday then all of a sudden 150+ likes.

      • +1

After yesterdays screw up i had a feeling to come back the next day and see the price

  • Shout out when they have the Eames recliners back in stock.

  • Is there a luxury tax incurred?!

  • +5

Wow what a turn around from their 10% off sale yesterday

    • +4

They took the comments to heart.

  • -3

I can’t picture many people purchasing, even if you took the 1 off the start of the price.

    • You'd be surprised. Lead time on the Embody is now 3months.. Thats a few container load.

    • That’s madness

  • If I dont need it now, will price drop to pre-covid level in the next few years?

    • Price has been creeping up over the years even pre-covid i think?

  • Gee that is a good price. I got an Aeron just over 12 months ago and love it. Tempted to sell and grab an Embody..

  • -2

Just buy a secret labs chair, really good, especially for the larger gent.

    • +6

      Yeah no, apples and oranges.

    • These are proper ergonomic chairs, not for esports streaming cred.

      • +1

Had an aeron at work for years, have the secret labs at home, its a better / more sturdy chair that doesnt subtly destroy suit pants.

Used both extensively, not trying to work on 'esports streaming cred'

      • yes most of the SL chairs are racer boi trash, they do also supply this one

        https://secretlabchairs.com.au/collections/neue#neuechair-ob…

        • +2

          looks like an aeron copy

    • i've got a secret lab titan, it's dogshit, can't sit on it for extended periods of time without back/tailbone pain.

Absolute waste of $630 i paid for it at the start of the year

  • Which would you recommend (Embody or Aeron) if it was a shared office chair in our study?

    • +2

That depends on a lot of different factors with the people sharing the chair. Always go and sit on these chairs yourself and make your own choice.

People can be (and should be!) extremely fussy about what they sit in.

  • Looks like a lot of places have matched these prices? Or is it a Herman miller special

    • +1

Would think it’s a supplier discount to everyone

    • It's a Herman Miller EOFY sale lasting till end of month :)

  • +1

Is this one the same as Logitech one without the branding?

    • Slightly different , reviews say this is more relaxed position. Logitech version is for gamers so sits you upright more . Some say Logitech is better, some say this is :) hard to tell when Logitech isn't in Australia yet (to my knowledge)

  • literally bought Aeron last week at full price…

    • what was full price?

      • 1690 usually

        • so all these votes because of $100?

          • +2

@MrBillions: I think it might be more for the Embody, regular price for those are usually 2k+

            • @buckethat: thanks, i want the high chair/stool version which is not avail :(

these are awesome if you have a standing desk

        • -1

The Aeron is now $1780, normal price is no longer $1690 unfortunately - year late.

          • -1

@exit: They were selling for $1690 up until literally 3 days ago

            • -1

@buckethat: Nah if you look at the previous LE deal on Aeron with 10% off and do the math, it goes to $1780. I also literally bought an Aeron there over an year ago where I was informed of a price increase from $1690 to $1740.

              Proof: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/627261

              • +1

@exit: The reason why that deal has 10 negative vote is because right before they brought out their 10% deal, they bumped up their price from $1690 to $1780.

I was on their website towards the end of May looking for a sale and it was $1690. They price jacked to offer a '10% discount'. A bunch of people, including myself called them to ask about the price hike, and hence why they removed the '10% eofy' and replaced it with a fixed 'special price'.

If you bought Aeron in store for $1740 one year ago, then they just ripped you off as its been available for $1690 all year up until 3-4 days ago.

  • -1

    i can afford $159 not $1590 lol

  • +3

    Thanks op. Bought 10

    • can i have 1?

  • +2

I used to sit in an officeworks chair for more than 5 yrs which fell apart, after getting the Aeron chair, it's just like night and day. I think this is the last chair I'll ever buy as it should last a lifetime. I bought at the peak of the pandemic so there's no discount - with tax claim and the durability of the chair, this is worth every cent.

The build quality and sturdiness of HM chairs are just 2nd to none. That said, try it if you can so you have no regrets especially considering the price. I didn't try the chair, but never regretted it at all.

    • How are you planning to do the tax claim? How much can you get back on it?

      • Consult your accountant, different depending on your circumstances- if you’re a sole trader, own your business or standard employee.

  • +2

Finally pulled the trigger for an Embody. Thanks OP! Hope it could be by my side for longer time.

  • thank you

  • Aeron is size B, would be better if size C is the same price, so i bought Embody, thanks op,

  • Question…. Cant decide between the Embody and Aeron.
Does the Embody come with arm rest? Because I know it can be an option in the States or is that only for the Aeron.

    • Both the Embody and the Aeron from LivingEdge come with the arm rests at no additional cost.

  • Excellent resell value until future floating chairs exist

Anyone here able to vouch for this guy's opinion?

Comfort: To me, the Embody is more comfortable than Aeron. The seat pan of Embody has two layers of coil springs with a layer of soft thin cushion that gives me a bouncy and softer feeling every time I sit in it. The Aeron on the other hand gives me a tougher feeling when sitting due to its mesh design. The mesh material does provide excellent coolness. The Aeron is still a really comfortable chair. The Embody gives me more of a lounge chair feeling whereas the Aeron gives me a real office chair feeling. However, I prefer Embody over Aeron on this one.

Adjustability: The Embody is fully adjustable but the armrests. You can set the armrests into a position and that’s it. You can’t shift the armrests in any other way. That’s really lame in my opinion. The Aeron offers more adjustability on the seat pan, backrest, and armrests (Depends on the spec of your Aeron). The armrests on the Aeron are fully adjustable. So, the Aeron wins this one.

Chair noise: This is something a lot of people complained about. The rubbery creaky noise on the Embody. My Embody has the same problem. The backrest will creak every time when I lean on it. I personally don’t care about it much but I know there are people that got headaches from it. The Aeron doesn’t have any noise when I move. So, Aeron wins this one.

Aesthetics: This is purely subjective. I personally love the futuristic skeleton design of the Embody. It catches my eyes every time I walk past it in my own house. Lol…. The Aeron has a really low-key look. It has a modern design but I personally think it looks just like every other office chair out there. The design of Aeron doesn’t appeal to me on a level that Embody does. I am giving this one to Embody for sure.

Optional headrest: If you’re a person that doesn’t recline that much on a chair or just hates headrest then you can choose either depends on which one you like more. However, if a headrest is essential for you for recline purposes. Then the Aeron is your only option if you’re buying from Herman Miller.

    • The only opinion here is the comfort, the other characteristics are pretty much agreed upon from what I see.

  • +2

    Damn you. Purchased it.

  • +1

Add $990 for polished aluminium base…

  • I have an aeron at home. 2004 Korean build. It's top quality but Honestly I don't feel much different from the cheap chair at work.. it's more for the look and feel.

  • Got an Aeron 3 years ago after a parade of ‘decent’ office chairs left me with a constant sore back and sciatica pains.

100% recommend the Aeron, haven’t had any issues since then, and I use it for about 8 hours a day (if not more sometimes), every day.

  • +3

Best chair i’ve owned is embody

  • +2

For those tossing up between the Aeron and the Embody - I would definitely encourage you to try them in person first in possible. Did so much research online and heard no shortage of opinions for one over the other.

Trying them in person I immediately understood the Aeron and with some adjustments it felt even better. However sitting on the Emobdy I had no idea what the fanfare was about, it felt just like an unremarkable office chair to me despite the higher price (perhaps I am far more partial to a mesh chair than cushion)

So ultimately it is very subjective and worthwhile trying first.

    • Yeah, 100% this. Personally I hate the Aeron, it cuts of circulation to my feet. The Embody however, <3. Best to try a chair in person first.

In saying that, even if you take advantage of this deal and decide to sell it, you'll highly likely be able to sell it on Gumtree/elsewhere for equal to or more than what you bought it for.

    • Yeah this was something I wish I could of done, but due to where I live the closest place to test each seat was 1600km away. So i've had to bite the bullet and go with the Embody. As much as it might be a risk I am comfortable in assuming if I don't like it I should be able to sell for a similar price to purchase, particularly due to my location (never seen a Herman Miller chair for sale in the area for the last 6 months.

      • +1

Totally fair mate. I also blind-buy. I blind-bought the Aeron and sold it a month later for exactly what I bought it for. I have also just blind-bought the Embody. The great thing about HM chairs is that they hold their value really well, so if you find out you don't like it there's a high chance you'll get at least what you paid for it back.

  • Whilst I really like the looks of Embody ,with the >2k price ,I had my mind set for Aeron and never bothered to do enough research on embody .Now that they are almost at the same price i am in a dilemma ..Aeron /Embody? Any suggestions? And I cannot try as i am overseas now.

    • +1

Think the bigger discount on the Embody makes it the best option, if you go to resell due to not liking it you should get a higher price for it so a little less risky.

  • how much do these normally cost? It doesn't seem to say on the website, just says "special pricing"…

    • Aeron, $1690 and Embody $2000.

    • -2

      Aeron normal price is $1780

      Proof: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/627261

      Dunno why people still say
ing its 1690, price has increased ages ago.

      Embody normal price around $2100

      • +1

I see you going around telling people that price has increased ages ago. It has not.

That post is 3 days old mate. And if you looked at the OP or the comments, you'll see a bunch of people saying that they jacked the price right before the sale.

        • +1

100% correct, price has been $1690 for at least a year, i check the price every few days hoping for any sort of price drop

        • Ok they might have attempted to scam me then because over an year ago they told me of a price increase of $1690 to $1740.

          • @exit: Perhaps mate, given my own experience with them on the phone, and the recent dodgy practice. I'm going to go with BadBacks as they're running the same promo. I've actually gone into one of their store not long ago and customer service was top notch.

  • 10/10 recommend got a herman miller mirra for $250, wouldn't baulk at paying full price given how good it is. Best to try before buy still to which style suits best.

  • considering the Embody as well.. but wait times have increased from 4 weeks… to 12 - 14 weeks…

    • Really? Still says 3-4 weeks for me.

  • +1

This is the chair equivalent of that Dyson Supersonic hair dryer. Totally unnecessary but I want it.

    • ironically i got both this week

      • How you finding the hair dryer?

        • Still waiting for it to be delivered, lock down here, but i went with refurbish one off Dyson ebay

  • Too bad there aren't other colour options available. They take the price up to 2.6k! Decided to go a Leap instead.

  • Trying to decide whether to cancel my leap V2 order and get the embody instead. Worth the extra $700?

    • If you are willing to wait 3 months sure haha :p (orders are now increased waiting time)

      • For the leap or embody?

        • Embody :)

    • +1

BTOD review has Leap v2 as best office chair you can get in 2021, and you know they test their chairs well.. imo Embody is priced higher because of the branding.

      • +1

I saw that review too but took it with a grain of salt considering they sell a lot of Leap v2's refurbished and seem to promote them heavily. Seems like there could be a bit of bias there.

Nonetheless, kept my leap v2 order, decided it probably isn't worth the extra $ and wait time.

        • +1

Aeron B is in stock, embody they told me mid-july so timewise similar to leap (sydney)

I cancelled my leap as I got to sit and test these out. Much more money but they do seem to hold value more.

  • +2

Thanks OP. I have the Aeron for nearly 10 years now, still going strong. Thinking of getting the Embody for the missus so will check it out once they are open after the lockdown.
Also considering the slab desk. Love the curvy design.

  • +1

I payed a whopping $2400 for my Herman miller embody a few years back. They last for ever but are super uncomfortable if you suffer from weak hamstrings and glutes or if you have chronic sciatica like symptoms.

Now if you don't have any of these I highly recommend this chair especially at this price point. I suffer from these and I can't handle more than 1 hour sitting at a time anymore. Before I could sit for 8 hours or so with breaks.

  • +2

Managed to score a Herman Miller Aeron Classic from work recently and loving it. I wish mine had the headrest though.
