Having said that, there are two models of the Smart Keyboard folio.

Fortunately, I have a 2018 iPad Pro so have ordered one to serve as the replacement for my current one (it's starting to get tired from 2.5 years of heavy use, so will swap it over later next year)

Is the older iPad a big enough downgrade compared to M1 or will it still be usable even in a few years?
It's be fine for quite a few years. You get 256GB of storage and a cellular modem (this is a way better unit than the current entry level iPad (better than the Air as well)).
Should qualify the above in case anyone takes it onboard - the newest Air has a newer processor that tops the 2018 Pro's.
It's not an easy win for the Air but in terms of raw power the Air's pretty well on top (single core anyway, multicore the 2018 comes out ahead).
