  • What's the use of this card like - as in, don't most places not accept AMEX it charge a premium?

Currently looking for a better value card than my POS CommBank deal.

  • To receive the $249 back:

    1. Add your new card to your Mobile Wallet (Apple Pay / Google Pay / Samsung Pay)
    2. Make a minimum of 10 transactions using your mobile wallet where each transaction is $25 or more within the first 3 months.
    3. Mobile wallet spend counts towards the $3,000 minimum spend criteria to receive the 90,000 Bonus Qantas Points.
    4. You're done!

Note: This includes transactions made both in store, and digitally using your mobile wallet. You must use your mobile wallet, linked to your New Card, and meet the minimum spend threshold in order for it to be an eligible transaction.

Can anyone clarify how one 'digitally' spends using their mobile wallet (vs just using your phone to pay in store) - how is this dfferent to just buying something online using your Amex card?

    • I think it’s referring to when you use Apple Pay or google pay directly from your iPhone as an “online” purchase.

Eg paying for your maccas meal in the app using Apple Pay

      • Cheers, that may explain my confusion - I've only ever used Samsung Pay and it doesn't appear to have the ability to make purchases from directly within the app.

      • apple pay via apple watch is also considered? or we need to use phone only?

    • There's a comment in this thread of someone using Google Pay as a payment option on eBay. So i think some sites accept Google/Apple pay.

Anyone obtained the $249 statement credit yet?

    • +3

With regard to the fee reimbursement: I was live chatting customer service for a different reason, but asked when the fee would be credited to the account - The lady said that the credit would apply only after the first three months have passed, for that is when the check for the required number of paywave/mobile wallet payments is done. From there it should be another 2-4 weeks apparently.

She confirmed that I had fulfilled the requirements but that I would have to wait for the credit :/

Yep got my 249 back about 6 weeks after getting the card.

Thanks heaps for opening my eyes to the wonderful world of FF points hacks!

Applied for this card halfway through last month. They never asked for documents to confirm salary requirements but approved the card with my requested $10k limit. I have a small remaining mortgage and a secured car loan. My wife has a small credit card where I am a secondary card holder. We've never defaulted or missed payments on anything.

We received the card after about a week. My wife is a secondary cardholder and we've moved all our expenses to AMEX. Therefore it took no time (two weeks?) to fulfill both reward requirements and after the recent statement was received I now have 96000 extra Qantas points in my account…

Now, my question is: Could I apply for this card again, in my wife's name, or would that be pointless? I'd obviously churn the card and only use it as far as accessing the Qantas points and lounge tickets…

What do you think? give it a go? :)

    • You should have signed up individually. One as your wife and one as yourself. That way you have have had 180K.

    • According to this post, it appears that you can

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/496333

Although now you need to wait another 2 weeks to get your new card.

        We did, it worked! :D

This time, for my wife, we asked for half the credit limit and were approved straight from the application form on the website. No phone call required ("you will receive your new card int the mail within 5-7 business days")

        Man, that's an easy 180.000 points :)

Churning seems fun… ANZ is the next target - Let's see how long it will be before we start getting rejected :/

signed up my wife with me as the supplementary card holder.

Am I supposed to see AMEX offers on my supplementary card via the AMEX app?

And I'm assuming the spend on the supplementary card goes towards earning the points via mobile wallet and 3k spend.

    • +1

Man, I got tired of this supplementary card business… And I've been with AMEX for just a couple of weeks now :) Sup cards are inferior in every way, and you don't need one. I signed up for one for my wife, but it's a mess.

Firstly, offers applied to the main card does NOT apply to the supplementary card. My wife downloaded the AMEX app and logged in with her provided credentials. Some of the offers I had on the primary card were available to her on the sup (and of course needed to be activated separately from the primary card), but not all. Shop small, for example, will never be available for a supplementary card holder. In my opinion, Shop small is the most valuable offer available, so not having it is kind of meh.

Regarding the required spend and the ten mobile wallet payments, fortunately the transactions made by the supplementary card holder DOES count toward the number required for the credit to apply. This was confirmed by AMEX support - excellent in-app support by the way, 5/5 stars for that.

This is not really useful though, as the primary card could simply be added to up to ten different mobile devices and WILL include all the premium offers activated on the main card (such as Shop Small). If churning cards and trying to simply get the best out of the offers, then there is no reason what-so-ever to apply for a supplementary card.

My wife's card has now been relegated to the office drawer where it will stay until we cancel the primary. I added my card to her mobile wallet and off we went…

Oh, and after fulfilling all the requirements for my card, we applied for another one for her and were approved, 180.000 points and four Qantas lounge vouchers here we go :)

      • +1

thanks for the detailed write up. Might do the same and relegate the supplementary card to the draw and only use the primary going forward

      • With the mobile wallet, is it 10 transactions where you tap your mobile? Is there a way to check how many times I've done this?

When I go into my Google pay wallet it just tells me all of the transactions I've made on the card. I can't tell which ones I completed with my phone.

Not sure if that made sense.

        Thanks

        • +1

Exactly, tap and pay transactions over $25.

You can check by contacting customer service through the chat function in the amex app, very simple to use and 24/7 availability.

They can also check what your status is on any activated offers and such. It's very helpful to see how you're tracking with Shop Small :)

          • @Talix: Thanks for this. Thought I just was blind and couldn't see the mobile wallet transaction tab. Chat seems to be down in the mornings. Will try later. Cheers!

  • Hi guys,
So I applied for the AMEX explorer card from the other deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/637529) and got denied (sounds like a lot of people got a deny!). Never been denied for a credit card before.

Is it a bad idea to apply for this given I've just been denied?

    • Really ? I find Amex the quickest and easiest credit card to be approved.

Reading a page or two of comments, seem like most people are in that boat

      • yeah i find it a bit weird. in the past i had that experience, just not this time.
anyway still deciding whether i apply for this card or not

        • +2

anyway if anyone cares…i applied for this card (after getting rejected for the other one)…and, i got approved….
exactly the same credit limit that i requested for the other one..
          i dont get it…

  • The 90k points went into “points club” not into my Qantas points balance. What’s the difference ?

    • NM. The points now have also gone into my normal Qantas points balance

      • How long did it take for the 90k points to be transferred from when you hit the 3k spend?

        • After the monthly billing cycle

  • Anyone had the $249 refunded yet?

    • Few people have, including myself

      • I’ve just been doing over $25 at woolies/coles. They qualify I assume?

        • Yah. Most mine was done at coles.

    • Card issued late July - $249 welcome credit posted today

  • Yep got mine now as well. Cheers!

  • Received 90,000 bonus points and $249 statement credit within 5 working days of meeting the 3,000 spend. Gotta love AMEX!

Hey everyone - I've stumbled upon an awesome hack that allows you to get back most of the $249 annual fee! When you go to cancel the card via chat, ask them to change the account to a fee-free account, and they'll send you a new card in the mail and refund the annual fee pro-rata (instead of cancelling). They will change your account, send out a new card AND refund the Annual fee pro-rata. I ended up with 90k points + $249 cash back for 10+ Apple Wallet transactions + $240 back from the annual fee that was originally charged.
I got the idea from the Amex Chat when I first tired to cancel and the rep suggested the option to move to a fee-free card with the annual fee refunded pro-rata. Took about 2 days for the pro-rata annual fee to be returned as credit, and I fully cancelled the account after that.
