  • Any upgrades from discovery avaliable?

    • +3

Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer.

You can actually contact AMEX and ask if they can offer an upgrade bonus
Usually not as good as new card offer, but not too bad if you don't want to wait for 18 months

    • I have an Amex Discovery credit card and when I called Amex they said I’m not eligible for this offer. Then a day or so later I got an email letting me know I could upgrade my card with this offer. 😋

The spend criteria is too high for me though - I’m passing this one.

      • 90k+fee wiped?

        • It is a similar offer.

The $450 annual fee is not wiped but it can be offset with the $450 annual travel credit.

And they are offering $200 back (not $250) along with 90k Qantas points as long as $3000 is spent in the first 90 days.

So NO NEED to make 10 transactions of $25 with the mobile wallet to get the $200 back.

          Hope this helps.

Is woolworths niche in your neck of the woods?

      • Haha.. 😂

    • +21

I connected my AMEX to my paypal, so then anyone that accepts Paypal will accept your AMEX without knowing it. Even ordered pizza the other day from my local joint down the road and paid with AMEX via my PayPal account
I also paid a bill the other day using 'Sniip', it does cost extra but paying for a bill with a credit card usually costs extra so didn't faze me.
Completely agree that most brick and mortar stores wont accept it but I haven't found it to be too much of a hassle for me.

      • -2

just wondering how do you use paypal to pay (physically) in store?

      • -2

Transactions through PayPal often don’t count towards the spend criteria though. Not sure about Amex, but that’s the case for ANZ.

        • My transactions via PayPal qualified for spend criteria for ANZ. Never tried for Amex.

        • Orly, will have to keep an eye out next time I churn credit cards.
I just checked my Amex app and it looks like my PayPal stuff has counted towards my points count.
Also just churned off my NAB one and used PayPal to pay for accommodation and that 100% counted as it was like $2k and I remember it put me over my minimum spend to get my bonus points.

        • I have the ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum and my PayPal purchases have counted. I use it to pay my bills.

    • +2

Have a look at the map here, you might be surprised how many places do actually take it.

Most of the major retailers and fuel stations do, so may well cover the bulk of your shopping, and as @sc00terMcTav has said, you can connect it through Paypal and use it through there.

    • I got a qantas amex card on a similar (better ;)) deal and have had no issues whatsoever. I had one retailer who didn't accept it, I forget who it was. Fast food I think.
      So…

    • +2

I would say that it was hard to find merchants willing to accept AMEX some 4-5 years ago, but not anymore. During AMEX's shop small campaign, they reached out to a tonne of merchants and offered reduced fees etc, so a lot of them accept it now. Also, vendors like Square etc who a lot of merchants now use accept AMEX, so I don't think your statement is necessarily true, at least in the CBDs and metro areas anyway.

      • Also Commbank a couple of years back started including Amex acceptance with new EFTPOS plans at the same rate as Visa and Mastercard, while most if not all the other banks require you to go to Amex yourself, negotiate the usually higher fee and then have the codes added to your merchant account to accept them.

If a store has a Commbank machine, I always double check if the screen displays an Amex icon when I go to pay and whip it out instead.

    • I was actually impressed when i took this card out last time (about 4/5 months ago) and the number of places accepting AMEX has increased dramatically. I'd say 75-80% of the places i visited accepted it. many were small businesses as well.

    • It's frustrating how many merchants don't accept amex, so you still have to carry an alternative payment method, but it's not correct to say it's hard to find one that does.

I just don't want to search, and I don't want to choose my merchant based on what payment methods are accepted.

So I agree, Amex is a pain.

  • +1

Only a year to go till I'm back on an AMEX….

    See you in 12 months.

    • In the same boat. Cya in 12 months

      • why a year?

        • +9

Presumably they cancelled 6 months ago, since Amex requires you to wait 18 months before signing up to offers again.

  • That's a pretty decent offer.

  • +2

There hasn't been a card in ages with free annual fee and points bundle!

  • Has anyone had experience with getting bonus points when they hold an Amex Corporate card? My employer makes me use one for expenses, just wondering if there's any way to find out if that excludes me other than reading the T's & C's (which indicate it's a no). I closed my previous personal Amex 2 years ago.

    • its fine if you have a corporate card

    • should be ok, as the account wouldn't be under your name. It would be the company's account, even though the card may have your name on it.

      • check the Ts&Cs of your "corporate" card. You are responsible for the debt. If your company misses a payment it will affect your credit rating

    • Just confirmed on AMEX live chat and they said Corporate Card holders are still eligible. Applied online and was instantly approved.

    • just got off chat with online and they said i wasn't eligible since my business amex card has my name on it.

      ah well.

  • +7

    18 months Amex is killer

    • Agreed.. i'm only a few months off

    • same here, just over 1 month off based on the end availability date

    • are you talking about any particular deal or that 18 months wait time ?

  • so I currently hold Amex Essential, looks like I am still ineligible for this offer?

    • +1

Same, don't want to close Essential ever. Have got phone screen replaced few times.

      • +1

did you use your essential card to purchase phone?

        • yes last 3 phones

          • @go2force: damn, i always look at 5% savings via GC and purchase using gc

            • +2

@JohnyEnglish: The way i see it, is that extra 5% you pay by paying full price, you get as an insurance… so $50 to replace your phone screen is not bad

              • @burgermaniac: I agree! next purchase will be direct!

              • @burgermaniac: Pretty good deal, but looks like you can also get covered if you only have your monthly bill on the card… can still save the 5% in some cases.

  • Will this be eligible for the AMEX app cashback offers that keep coming up from time to time?

    • +3

Yes, this is AMEX issued card so all AMEX offers are available
Tho recent years quite a few good AMEX offers that are targeted

  • Also, would ATO, Council and utility bill payments count towards the 3k spend requirement?

    • +2

Yes, they all counted towards 3k
just that the points per earning for gov charges are lower

      • And you pay hefty surcharge too

        • Depends on the policy of whom you are paying the bill to. There are sometimes ways to avoid these (use PayPal, postbillpay e.t.c.)

  • So basically $0 annual fee? Now to decide between this and the Qantas Ultimate..

  • +1

Great deal, I just closed my Qantas AMEX card. Which means will have to miss these deals for 18 months :)

  • Damn I applied for a Citi rewards yesterday. Would have gone with this over Citi for sure.
    Oh well

  • Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer

Does this mean if I currently hold a DJ Amex card I am excluded from this offer?

    • i think dj amex or westpac amex are all not counted… so you can apply…

      • I thought Westpac Amex has been issued by Amex for at least three years now. I had an Amex + Mastercard card combo from Westpac and they handed it over to Amex proper.

  • Is the $249 annual fee waived every year ?

    • +3

      Haha definitely not.

    • Nope

    • +1

Good question. I don't know whether comments above don't realise this, or they're happy to take some points now then pay for them forever.

      • +1

Nah, many here would cancel at or before 12 months to avoid being charged for another year, and sign up to another CC offer at the time. Rinse and repeat.

You could ask their retention team to waive the next years fee but YMMV.

    • if I read it correctly… looks like got to spend it…

  • +1

Do these kind of offers stack with referrals from friends?

  • "Make a minimum of 10 transactions using your mobile wallet where each transaction is $25 or more within the first 3 months."

    Is a killer!!!

Easier if I'm paying bulk like bills and groceries. In hindsight, does it count as 1 transaction if you split payment?

    • +1

Hey! I'm confused why I got negged! It's pretty hard to do minimum $25 ten times in 3 months

      • I do a hundred transactions a month on my credit card. How is it hard?

        • Because in this case you have to use your mobile wallet, not just the credit card number, which cuts out most online transactions.

          • +3

@stingypants: Yes I understand probably most of my transactions are not going to count but even fuel once a week would be more than enough.

Groceries is a better example for people who don't drive much. And you can split a groceries purchase if need be at self serve checkouts.

I don't carry a wallet so any purchase not at home is a tap and pay situation. Is this not normalised yet?I think my banks phone app allowed tap payments 7 or 8 years ago at least, though now I use apple/Google pay

            • @SgtBatten: Most of the groceries I buy accepts cash only - still in this day and age. Would be great for opal top ups but because groceries are out of the equation, that's going to be tricky. Still factoring in bills.

            • @SgtBatten: I always get groceries delivered online from woolies, which allows paypal payments but not googlepay or samsungpay. It's annoying their mobile wallet payment condition excludes paypal.

      • You are going to have to spend $3000 in 3 months anyway to get the bonus points, so I think you would not have a problem spending $250 out of the $3000 using your wallet as required.

        • +1

I would spend the $3000 towards annual car insurance renewal, payments to kids' daycare and woolworths gift card purchases. Most of these wouldn't be possible with Googlepay or Samsungpay I think?

Is there a way to purchase wish egift cards using googlepay or samsungpay?

          • @makemeonewithnothing: I guess you would need to buy the gift cards at the store. I think if I buy fuel, groceries and some dinners I could cover it.

      • just buy a gift voucher and you are done with it

      • Reporting back - I already used the digital wallet 4 times since getting my card last week for purchases over $25. I think it's doable!

        • Did you end up getting the $249 back? If so, how long did it take to refund after you hit the 10 transactions?

          • @mc85: Heya, I think it'll happen after the 90 day period. I found live chat super helpful if you want to confirm with them.

          • +1

@mc85: Hey i got it back now! Not sure about the timing.

            • @doughnuthouse: Good to hear - thanks and well done!

I might be a few days behind you compared to when I got my card/hit the $3k limit. Just today I noticed in the app that the 90k points is due.

Did you end up getting the 10 digital payments via NFC with a mobile or via online spend?

AmEx via chat were useless for me sadly.

              • @mc85: I just checked my app. I got the $249 refunded the other day

    • Is there any way to track when mobile wallet transactions have been recognised by AmEx?

      • I just got the card last week and have been using Google Pay. Google Pay tracks the transactions made through it. In my Amex account under wallets, it says Google Pay is linked and gives the virtual card ID. I think another way to check is to check the transactions once they go through to see if it's the same virtual ID. I know that's how you can tell with Commbank. I can report back if you like.

        • Cheers :). I'm using Google Pay too. I can see two transactions via eBay in there, so that side is all linked up happily.

But whereabouts is the section with wallets in the AmEx account (online or in app)?

          • @mc85: It's online - go to Account Management > Card Management > Manage Digital Wallets.

How do you pay on eBay with Google Pay? Can you use Google Pay on other sites?

            • +1

@doughnuthouse: Legend - thanks! Yep, I see it linked in there.

It comes up as an option during checkout (where credit card, or Paypal come up). Seeing as my earlier purchases worked, I'm thinking of using it to buy up some Wish gift cards via eBay through individual transactions instead of directly via Woolworths to chock up this 10 transaction total (don't have a NFC mobile, so that limits things a bit for things like fuel, etc).

If I add my partner onto my card, does she then need to wait 18 months after cancellation until applying for her own card?

    • Also in the same boat, would like to find out if anyone knows

      • +2

no she will be eligible for the offer

    • i dont think an additional card holder is counted…
unless she also own it as prime holder herself

  • +2

Just waiting for my 18 month wait to end… feels similar to waiting for lockdown to end…

    • +2

Your 18 months will probably come around quicker

  • I used to hold on to one amex card at all times, to take advantage of their many offers e.g shop small. But their offerings have become thin these last few years (even before covid). Maybe it is time to cancel and be eligible for these new signup promotions.

    • You can cycle between the 'normal' Amex range and the David Jones cards, if that's of any help. 12 month wait for promo on the David Jones cards, 18 months on the regular range.
