also note that the card comes with Complimentary Travel Insurance
but it doesn't have Rental Vehicle Excess Cover (which is a catch for me as I only recently found this in my last trip)

But overall, been using this card for 4 years + and still happy to keep it
Don't forget to use the referral link to help out your fellow OZBers!

  • +4

Is a $450 annual fee, not $495 (Almost had a little panic attack, as this is my go to card).

Edit: Please use REFERRAL links as it's the same benefit but someone else also get a bonus too.

    • +8

      Panic attack? Over $45?

      • +11

You are currently posting on Ozbargain :)

        • I pinch pennies but I don't lose sleep over it

  • +4

Bit high annual fee for such points :/

    • +3

But you do get a $450 Qantas Travel Credit, which I have found to be very useful. Despite what some other people say, I have always been able to get the same price flights as Qantas.com.au

      • +3

I found that AMEX Travel has the same standard rate price as Qantas website
but sometimes not able to get the promotional price (eg. Red Deal etc.)

But I do agree that AMEX Travel isn't overpricing the tickets

        • +1

I managed to use mine recently on the half price flights so came in pretty handy!

          • +1

@magicpies: Did the amex booking site show qantas flights at half price, if qantas is running a promo on its own site?

      • I think qantas also opened this up to be valid for purchases at the qantas store during covid, not sure if ongoing though

        • Not ongoing I don't think - I got the card new a few months ago and didn't have this option

      • As long as you use the credit…sadly last year was no chance,…

And this year my travel credit has to be used / booked by August….hence I best go somewhere in AU … not much choice outside at the moment,.

    • The $450 Travel credit pays off the annual fee
But it doesn't rollover and only limited to Qantas flight
Good for those who travel at least once a year

      • +5

Yeah, that is one thing to consider. If you do fly a bit (and with Qantas), then the annual fee pays for itself.

One advantage of Amex compared to other cards is the cashback offers which can also save you a bit. Take for example the recent liquorland $10 back on $100 spend, which I used to buy a Coles and myer gift card which I then used at Coles for a 10% saving on my groceries.

I'd save at least $200 a year through various Amex promotions.

        • Buying giftcards works? I'll need to give it a go!

          • +3

@puka: Yeah you can save heaps from Buying Gift Cards at places that have the cashback (ie: Coles group liquor store; Liquorland, First Choice and Vintage Cellars) and then using those gift cards like cash at the stores of your choice (ie Coles, Officeworks, Kmart, etc)

            • +1

@Pcoder: So many missed opportunities :-(. Thank you for the information!

          • +1

@puka: You need to double-check the terms and conditions of the individual offer, because some offers specifically exclude gift card purchases. However, in my experience, I have found that nearly all offers do not exclude gift card purchases.

Also, keep in mind that you will not receive all the offers you will see on OzBargain. For example, I have missed out on the last two rounds of First Choice Liquor offers.

            • @WookieMonster: They are usually unable to tell what you brought with the transactions anyway. I don't know of any one that has had issues with amex cards, cashbacks and gift cards.

      • +1

Also, you have to spend the $450 in one transaction

  • +9

You get tired of asking if they accept Amex

    • +2

Don't even ask now - just swipe - I'd say less than 10% of the places I shop don't take it

    • +4

      Maybe 5 years ago.

If you’ve bothered to use Amex at all recently you’d realize that acceptance rates these days are much better and Amex customer service and perks are good too.

If you like to travel (at the moment domestically) Amex cards are pretty good, way better than something like CBA cards which have high annual fees for basically nothing in return.

      • How about the surcharge. Do most places have one and do they have to tell you ?

        • +1

In my experience if there’s a surcharge it’s just a credit card surcharge these days, not higher specifically for Amex.

    • My go-to question now is - is there surcharge on using AMEX? Most of the places accept AMEX now.

  • +4

Great card! I love cycling this one.

Don't forget to use the refferal tab to help out your fellow OZBers!

  • +1

The 120,000 bonus QFF points will also add towards the Qantas Points Club progress
so will be pretty easy to reach the 150,000 tier

    https://www.qantas.com/au/en/frequent-flyer/status-and-clubs…

  • Do you still need to wait 18 months to be eligible from last amex cancelation? I'm about 15 months I reckon!

    • +2

Yes, 18 months between closing and applying

  • +5

haven't seen anything like it for a while.

Exact same thing was offered a month ago

    • +2

I think the difference is that this offer can use the Referral Link (see above), where a fellow ozbargainer gets points too.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/api/referral/112

      • Does the referee get any extra points or just referer?

        • The person who signs up gets 120k and 120 status credits. The referee gets 40k

    • +1

There was one in January 100k points, $249 fee and included the $450 credit. I want that to come back.

  • +3

6 months down, 12 months to go!! :'(

    • I'm 15 months down.. 3 more months ughhh the wait is killing me!

      • Same here! Closed 05.02.20.

      • Jealous!!

    • Bloody amex and their ridiculous cool off period

  • +1

You can also get consider this.

    • +6

Its actually 100,000 bonus QFF points tho
the 25,000 only comes after renewal (with $395 annual fee)

      • Good point

    • need free annual fee so then can apply lol

    • I got knocked back for this. First card I've ever been knocked back for. They cited income :/

      • Is the minimum income 65k?

  • +1

How much is 120000 bonus points worth in dollar value?

    • +2

Around $600 if you use to redeem all Gift Cards (19730 per $100)
If you use to redeem classic rewards ticket or seats upgrade
will be 1c or more / point, so around $1200+

    • I just booked a business class flight to London (via Doha) for 159,000 points

      • +2

        How much were the taxes?

Any issues with leaving Australia? Or Exemption requirements?

        • Taxes on that are around $500, and note this is 159,000 points + $500 each way, assuming you want to come back

          • +1

@TimOfEastBNE: Of course that is true, but the cash price for that ticket as I've today is $5,563, thus my 159,000 points was worth somewhere in the region fo $5k. I've also booked on the way back though the taxes are a little higher departing London. (Admitedly if you book a return Biz ticket its more like $8300, but taxes/fees aside I've got about $7k value from 318,000 points)

  • Can you pay using BPAY in AMEX like the Anz credit cards?

    • +1

      use Sniip

      • Any surcharge while using this platform?

        • +2

Response from the developer in the Review:

Paying with the Sniip app is completely free when using a debit card. When using a credit card (Amex, Mastercard and Visa) you will incur a 1.5% surcharge but you’ll get full points on any rewards card (this is not the case with the other payment options you have referenced).

  • Is there any fee free deals on right now? havent seen one in ages :(

    • ANZ Rewards Black
      First year free annual fee
      180,000 ANZ points = 90,000 Velocity points

      Its not QF tho :)

      https://www.pointhacks.com.au/credit-cards/anz-rewards-black…

      • oh thank you I need QF though. My points are expiring soon and need earn some QF points.

        • +5

Download the Qantas Health App and you can earn (small amounts of) points for walking etc.

Free way to earn points to keep your Qantas points active. Otherwise I think there's a fee free Amex that you can still earn Qantas points with

          • +1

@Woodyg22: Omg. I have a Fitbit. I would have never known about this. Thank you so much!

        • +3

Get petrol from BP, scan your QFF

          • @[Deactivated]: I always refill at my local BP. Thank you so much!

            • @ChatCPT: No worries! Happy points hunting!

            • @ChatCPT: Careful with this one, not all BPs take part in this… Sadly none of the one's around me do

    • 60K points fee free for st george / Banksa / bank of Melbourne customers. Apply from within the internet banking app.

  • +1

Got this card in the last deal.
Has been fine I guess but Amex has been shitty to deal with. App and website all feel outdated and don't work great and phone support was weak. Just my opinion
    Otherwise all good

  • My last AMEX was closed on November 5 2019. Cutting it pretty close for the 18 month period. Any ideas if I can ask AMEX to confirm I'd be eligible for the points?

    • +2

it's either 18 months or it isn't, there's no such thing as 'cutting it close.' You closed your account more than 18 months ago so are entitled to the points. If they don't automatically credit you, then you can call them and explain

  • I never had the 120 status points applied. Anyone know how to get it added?

  • +2

Just be aware that you have to use all the travel credits in one go.

  • -1

    $450 fee tho

    • $450 travel credit each year

  • Never pulled the trigger as happy with current amex discovery so never tried this, but can the travel credit be used for hotels booking via qantas or must be flight tickets?

    • You won’t be eligible for the sign up bonus as you currently hold an AMEX card.

      • Yep hence im still deciding, if cant use for hotels then i keep my old one instead of waiting 18m

        • +1

No hotels with the travel credit. Qantas flights only.

        • +1

It can in a way from my experience in May 2020. I used the credit to pay for a bundle (Air + Hotel) on the AMEX Travel website, so it can be used for accommodation as long as a qualifying flight is included in the purchase.

    • I am also keen to know if the credit can be used for accomodation!

      • +1

No. Only Qantas flights booked through the amex website.

        • Thank you!

Recently qantas store has some discounts. I bought a TV RRP1099, for $190.00 used 129000 points. So paying up $450 annual fee for almost $900 of so called value I reckon is worth it. Can’t travel recently so might as well use it somewhere lol.

  • If I have a planinum edge card would I still be eligible

  • If I have amex corporate card but not personal card, am I still eligible as a "new card member"?

    • +1

      Yes

    • I managed to confirm this with Amex directly. Corporate cards are treated differently to personal cards.

I also found the number for the "new card application team". A lot of questions asked here can be answered by Amex if people wants responses from the source.

      1300 557 743
      02 9271 7870
Open 7.30AM to 6PM Mon to Fri

      • Do you check the box that asks if “ Please check this box if you have another American Express Issued Card”

  • Once I book my $450 flight, can I cancel the card before travel commences?

    • +1

Yes, i did the same and flight got cancelled so got full refund of the flight to my bank account so essentially $0 AF

      • What if you want to keep the flight? Does it automatically get cancelled or can you keep it?

        • Flight is not affected if you cancel your card. In my case, the flight got auto cancelled due to covid restrictions.

  • Is there a CC that offers QFF status that is not an amex? (I already have one)

    • +1

The Qantas Premier Platinum also offers status credits if you're desperate for them, but the sign-up bonus is not particularly attractive at the moment.

      • I will have a look thanks!
