Interested to hear what people think before I take the plunge :)

    Forum post?

Looks alright…not amazing. I've never bought an ASUS, what do people think of them?
Also, i just cant help thinking now isnt the best time to buy (dropping HDD's Prices, Ivy bridge in april, this has a pretty old and crappy graphics card)

    • I've posted this as a deal because:

      • Its easily the cheapest price for this laptop that I can find, by around $200.
      • It has free 8GB memory upgrade which is usually an extra $139.

I recently purchased an ASUS tablet and am really happy with it. Haven't tried their notebooks out.

I'm not that interested in graphics card as I'm not a gamer.

@basilv the graphic card is one of the most important things in a portable computer.

Even if you don't do gaming M$ sometimes soon will force pity computer users to upgrade their GPU because of something software or hardware minimum requirement.

They've already done this practice and they will do again for sure.
Then what will be your feeling, you made and expensive investment and maybe after a year you might have to sell it at Sunday market for less than $350 or you can opt to use your "powerful notebook" (your words) for word processing and e-mail.

And what a bout the hard disk, it's simply a bottleneck.
        Not your fault of course.

        • I must admit that I overlooked the HDD speed.

Your comments on graphics cards is new to me. Do you have any references for this?
I still use a couple of laptops that are 10 years old, so this laptop being made obsolete in 1 year due to MS requirements sounds strange.

I guess it depends what you're using it for. I'm a developer. Running a Web server, database server, IDE, browser, Photoshop and others simultaneously.

Wtf? Since when have you needed to upgrade your graphics card for something other than gaming? Only time I can think of that happening was for Vista Aero which didn't do well with old onboard graphics (ie, motherboards ~5 years old at the time). Even then, Aero was optional, not required. AFAIK Microsoft have never forced users to upgrade their graphics card.

    • They don't show the screen pixel parameters (unless you can work 'em our from the spec's of the graphics card…?

No, the screen could be less than that card's max HxV pixel counts… any clue?

      • I noticed this too, screen resolition is very important. Speed not so much as anything above Core i5 is enough for most usage. HDD's in laptop are never fast enough so I always upgrade, in fact I'd love them to ship a small slow HDD and knock off $100.

Grahpics card isn't so important as any new mobile GPU will be good enough for Windows 8, but only top end GPU's are really good enough for new games.

Got this laptop about a year ago with 6gb memory for $999 (40% at HN), great little beast, has a strong chasis, runs drafting software like a breeze, overall an awesome laptop compared to my dell which has fallen apart….

Only negative is that you could of gotten this laptop a year ago!!

  • Whats the screen res on this thing?

      I believe 1366x768

      edit:
Multimedia becomes complete with Video Magic image enhancement, boosting content to full, 72 frame 1080p HD and optimizing colors for vivid effect.
15.6" 16:9 HD (1366x768)/Full HD (1920x1080) LED backlit Asus Splendid Video Intelligent Technology

      • According to the ASUS website, it's 1920x1080. Full HD.

        • There is a HD and Full HD model.
The centrecom offering would be the HD (1366x768) version.

  • my comments:

I have one that is similar specs, the large memory is not going to help much as the bottleneck is at the HDD, you need do something about it or your windows rating will be 5.9

CPU and GPU will be 7.6
    Memory will be 7.1
    HDD will be 5.9

and the battery just dies out fast in half a hour after using for a year
microphone not working now but I hardly used it at all.

overall good specs but will have tiny issues here and there. that's why it beats the price

just saw ppl say it's 1920x1080, i think it's wonderful at this price

    • "you need do something about it or your windows rating will be 5.9"

Who cares? Seriously, what difference is the windows rating going to make to anything?

      • Agreed… I guess you could always plug-in a USB 3.0 HD to boost its HD perfomance, even if the MS toy takes a worst-case view (odd for MS, but I guess it helps its partners sell H/W).

        • that's exactly what I mean by "you need do something about it "

      • it means it will be slow … as simple as that

        • +3

Your comment suggests that there's a benefit to having a high Windows rating. My point is that there's no benefit at all. The Windows rating is irrelevant.

As for whether a slow HDD matters, it depends on how you'll use the system. Personally, I couldn't really care how fast the HDD is. Makes very little different to how I use my laptop.

    • I think people are forgetting Moore's law & its (inferred) effect on what we should be able to get, at what prices… :-/

  • This is a good deal and a great specced laptop. The only bottleneck is the 5400rpm hard drive. Replace it with an SSD and this should be a very fast machine.

I would go for it right now but I need to wait till July for my laptop replacement :(

    • +1 for bottleneck but ssd drives are still immature.

      • Solution then would be the fastest 2.5" HDD. However I think I'd plop for the Crucial 128Gb I've seen on OzBargain many times recently.

  • Generally a good laptop, but I wasn't extremely impressed with video playback and Asus' 'Video Magic' is just Cyberlink PowerDVD, which isn't the best media player out there.

    • +2

      media player classic..'nuff said

      • Yup. Any video playback issues you've had dowant will not be the fault of the laptop, just the software you're using.

      • Media player classic is great (although I prefer KMPlayer), but the machine itself doesn't play non-HD vids very well on ANY player, in terms of quality. There's no stuttering or lagging, but the images aren't as sharp as you'd expect.

HD vids are good, but again, not quite as good as other laptops I've tried out.

On the other hand, the sound quality is the best of any laptop I've used.

        • +1

Images not being sharp has nothing to do with the hardware. It's all controlled by software (players and codecs). Unless you're referring to resolution, but the quality will be the same as any 1366x768 laptop.

      • Or VLC, a much cleaner solution.

        • never had MPC crash on me ever. VLC crashes on my computer almost once every time I use it. I still use it sometimes because I can connect my android and control VLC from there, but if they made a remote for MPC, then I'd be a happy man.

  • hmm 16gb ram… 5400rpm hd.. ramdrive anyone? :p

  • Imagine it comes with 32-bit Windows 7 and 16GB ram then i will be laughing so hard…..

  • Ergonomic it is not.
