  • Think there is more value in the i7 version for the larger storage and RAM alone. In reality the i7’s in these aren’t cooled properly (along with most other ultralights) so after about 30 seconds the i7 quickly throttles to the range of i5 performance anyways.

Definitely a lightweight laptop but, I was strongly considering them but went with an XPS deal instead.

    • I think the reason is because the new Intel CPUs need 28w TDP and above to start performing at the expense of battery life. Unfortunately if the cooling is inadequate and designed for a lower TDP, like 15w, they throttle and performance can drop significantly.

      • So annoying how you can't undervolt 11th gen Intel chips. Heard this thing runs hot

    • can i have a link to the xps?

XPS deal long sold out unfortunately. I posted the deal about 4-5 months ago.

If you have an edu email, you can get the 13" Lenovo S540 from their education website for $1106. It has a faster 8 core AMD Ryzen processor,QHD screen,16gb Ram, 512 ssd and aluminium chassis.

    • Better thermals too. If you dont mind the extra 300g of weight get this

so.. this is about 900 grams? Amazing how light you can make an ultrabook when you don't care about cooling.

I'm kinda shocked how Lenovo removed a fan from this laptop to keep it under 1kg. If you open up the laptop there's literally a chunk of empty space where there should be a fan. But then again, 900g for a laptop is sooo light.

        • Is cooling an issue ? Will this overheat easily with no built-in fan?

  • Great price - I returned my i7. Erosion as the battery life was rubbish

  • Is the RAM upgradeable?

    • nope, like most ultrabooks

8gb ram in 2021 should be illegal..

Entirely incorrect. It's perfectly fine for web+email+office+video watching work, and if you're careful you could squeeze out some low res games with the iGPU too.

It's a cost thing. At $1k I'd like 16gb and only a FHD screen, but there is clearly a market for people that prefer the higher ppi screen and just don't need 16gb of ram.

Technically 4gb is viable, but that you do have to actively manage, and would only fly on a $400 laptop or some other super bargain price point.

@incipient: Yeah but imo on high end laptops such as these especially over 1k should always have over 8gb ram given the price. This laptop retails for over 1.5k and any laptop at this price point should have 16gb at a given. Just for future proofing purposes.
