  • Will this be able to run one of these Dell external monitors for WFH purposes? If so what would be the recommended input HDMI, USB-C or DVI?

    1. U2711
    2. s2721DFG
    3. AW3821DW
    • Yes to all 3 - USB-C to DisplayPort is the only one that will work at the full resolution/refresh rate.

  • I want a laptop, ut cant decide wheather this compact, tiny machine or a more powerful gaming laptop with 1650Ti in similar price :(

    • Hi, just wanted ask which gaming laptop with 1650Ti that has similar price did you find? I'm also looking for a good laptop with similar price for work.
      Thanks

  • I'm torn between getting this and the Macbook Air M1, any hot takes on the two to help me reach a decision? Seems like with the S540 you're getting more bang for your buck, but the Macbook gives you a better 'product service' and comes with the Apple brand backing… is there much more to it than this?

MacBook M1 is an excellent laptop. Only problem is it can’t run windows natively. If you are fine with using a Mac ecosystem go for it. The m1 is probably the most revolutionary MacBook in the past 2 decades. If you are like me and use Windows I would stay away. There is parallels but you are always going to have a performance and battery loss in virtualisation

For those interested, this just dropped to $1106 with EOFY coupon.

    • Do you still need to buy it through the Education Store?

      • yes

      • you can try to buy it from regular store and try to get the additional discount via a chat with sales.
I tried to do that already from the educational store, but they told me they couldn't do any further discount because the educationl store had the maximum discount

  • Just received the laptop today, it looks great. However, I had an issue connecting to the Dell monitors using USB C. The monitors just couldn't detect the laptop. In the display settings, I could see the three displays (Laptop, 2 x monitors), but the monitors were not showing anything.

Just wondering if anyone has the same issue and happy to shed some light.

Extend the displays in Windows Display settings.

    • +1

Hold windows key on your keyboard and press P then pick extend.

Seems lenovo does not allow change of mind returns. What crap service considering you can't even look at most of their model in any local shops. Was tempted to buy for a fussy relative but no way with this rubbish return policy in case they don't like it. Much easier to buy a surface with a 60 day return policy

I suppose there is a reason why it is so cheap - crap service

Good specs, only downside is the resolution. 2560*1600 is too much for a 13" display, better to find one with FHD screen so you don't have to mess around with display scaling which causes issues with a lot of apps. When putting display scaling to 200% as Windows recommends some of your apps will be blurry upscaled, others will show the bigger font size but don't re-adjust the UI for it and buttons and drop downs will be offscreen so you can't click on them at all.

    • I've owned this laptop for more than 6 months, no real issues with scaling. Love the 16:10 QHD display, looks so much better then my colleagues laptop with a FHD display.

      • What's your usecase scenario?

I'm looking for programming, web, netflix and usual uni shit. No scaling issues for those things?

        • I mainly use it with Affinity photo and designer in addition to Office, browsing and conferencing.

      • What else is out there comparable to the S540 but with a 14-14.5" screen?

        • Asus Zenbook 14 UM425UA which I really wanted but not at $1599 when this is $1106 on the education store.

          • @basketballfreak6: Do you have a link for the Zenbook? I am also weighing up between the 2. The Zenbook seems to have a bigger battery with a 400nit 1w screen. Also looks a bit sexier.

            • @ChickenDinner123: https://www.centrecom.com.au/asus-zenbook-14-um425ua-14-fhd-…

Pretty much the reason I was eyeing the Zenbook too. From what I've gathered there's nothing in it performance wise between the 5700U and 4800U but the Zenbook to me looks nicer overall, has the cool number pad, bigger battery and WiFi 6 BUT those things don't add up to $500 for me. The Lenovo technically has advantage screen wise though with QHD res and I feel 16:10 ratio screen would be nicer to look at for a small laptop such as this.

  • Hi All,
I bought this laptop (Lenovo IdeaPad S540) from a previous deal.
Can anybody please recommend a decent (yet not too expensive) powerbank for this laptop?
Minimum 65W PD enabled Powerbank would do?

  • 1 year depot warranty, can't even upgrade when buying through education site.

    • I had no issues when I got this laptop 6 months ago. Also upgraded the warranty after purchase when they had a discounted promotion.

      • Is it worth getting extra warrenty? Shouldnt the Non- Accidental issues be covered under statutory warrenty- ACCC?

  • I’m guessing with RAM soldered on-board, there’s no way of upgrading the memory?

    • +1

      Yes soldered

      • @shellshocked Thanks for your response on the RAM.

Any idea if the storage (SSD) can be upgraded? There are some eBay SSD deals floating around. Maybe will get one to increase from 512GB to 1TB if it does support the upgrade.

  • Im contemplating between this and

    Surface laptop 3 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/630690

    Lenovo yoga
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/631466

Any experts can provide some view? Mostly casual use with very very light non graphic intensive gaming.

    • I am the OP of this deal and have had the S540 for over 6 months.

Surface 3 is the previous generation AMD CPU from 2019 and is about 50 to 75% slower then the one in the S540 in certain workloads.

The Yoga has the current Intel 11th Gen CPU, however despites Intel's best marketing efforts, third party reviews indicate it can be 45 to 50% slower in certain workloads vs the one in the S540. The S540 is about 300g heavier but has much better cooling vs the Yoga. The Yoga will throttle the CPU, due to inadequate cooling, and you will notice a slow down. You would only look at the Yoga if you need Thunderbolt and need really light weight at the expense of performance loss.

  • +2

For those who can't get it via the EDU store, its on ebay for $1159.00 with code PEOFY22

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/234047933548?hash=item367e580c6c…

    • This actually works out cheaper for me unless cashback works with education store? Hmm….

      • don't forget you can get 5% off choice or swap GC for eBay as well.

        • Problem is I can only use 7 GC plus the voucher.
So… Cant really get that much discount. Still, already got discount from Coles MC

Works out cheaper in the end. Unless you have another suggestion?

  • Is it worth the extra money to get this Harvey Norman deal?

    https://www.harveynorman.com.au/lenovo-ideapad-s540-13-3-inc…

Or should I stick with this deal?

    • +1

The Intel 11th gen CPU in the laptop you posted is a alot slower in multi-core operations versus the Lenovo website AMD Ryzen deal. You would only get the Harvey Norman offer if you wanted to waste $300+ for another 512gb of ssd space, due to it's 1tb drive. Extended warranty would also be cheaper via the Lenovo site.

Fyi the i7 scores approximately 10,000, the AMD Ryzen 7 scores approximately 17000.

      https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/11th-Gen-Intel-i7-1165G…

      • Thanks for that, confirmed my thoughts.

  • Just got one with my assistant's student account. Hoping to use it as a portable photo editing machine.

  • @shellsshocked I have been using this laptop for few weeks now. I use it just for browing internet/ netflix/ youtube, and I use it mostly on my lap and it gets a bit warm , no fan noise or heavy use, any settings you would recommend to keep it cool. Thanks

  • Does cashreward cashback work for the education store?

    • You can try but there TnCs says it is not supposed to.

  • The Ryzen model seems to be out of stock on the Lenovo website at the moment but the Intel i5-1135G7 model with NVIDIA GeForce MX450 2GB GDDR6 and Thunderbolt is available for $1279.

    • That's too expensive for an i5 quad core. A GPU with only 2gb of VRAM is not enough in modern games. That's a downgrade over the Ryzen version.

    • I think there are two left now as I was checking for a friend. Get in there!

  • Looking to upgrade ssd . Anyone upgraded ssd in this laptop who can help.

  • Just got this. The thumbnail that ozbargain has shows it opening to 180 degrees. It doesn't. I need that for my use case.

On Lenovo website it doesn't show that in the photos. So I have no idea where ozbargain pulled that image from but it mislead me.

So now I have freshly opened one for sale 🤦‍♂️

    • How did you get this? It says OOS on Lenovo education store :(
