  • I really wish the Greens would tackle the bigger issues like over population (that is the root cause of all the other dire issues we face from pandemics to climate change to world fisheries collapse etc).

Other than Dick Smith, no one seems to get it!

Don't worry Elon Musk is taking care of that issue.

      • -2

You can guarantee the numbnuts in the liberal party won't lol

        • That's why there's Elon Musk.

    • The Greens like any mainstream political party are all about growth at any cost. Growth means more tax revenue.

No party will argue against population growth.

Just checked the Greens population principles:
The current level of population, population growth and the way we produce and consume are outstripping environmental capacity. Australia must contribute to achieving a globally sustainable population and encourage and support other nations to do the same…

"Greens like any mainstream political party are all about growth at any cost."

Greens are hardly a mainstream political party (shown by number of votes they attract & number of elected representatives), probably because they don't support growth at all costs.

I'd argue that Australia is doing well in reducing population. Our current Total Fertility Rate is 1.7 (140th from 189 nations - source https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/total-fer…). According to the UN, 2.1 is "repopulation" - this means each generation is replacing itself.

Our population growth is only coming from 1 place, immigration (which is fine).

Are the greens suggesting we should lower our TFR further - prioritising other countries citizens over our own citizens when it comes to having children - or are they saying we should cut immigration?

I'd suggest they wouldn't admit to wanting either…

@Matt P: To answer your questions - ask the Greens or read their sustainable population principles I linked to. Making simplistic guesses in a complex policy area isn't useful.
(I have nothing to do with the Party, just did a quick search.)

There has been a population debate - people such as Dick Smith wants a halt to the population growth. Take your pick of sources for his views Basically we are a dry country - water & other resources may not support continued population growth, especially in the main cities.

Population matters have been central to Australian politics almost from the first occupation by the British.

"Populate or Perish" was 1 slogan used. Fear of someone else coming in like the Brits did has been a great fear here. Populating the land was seen as the solution. We still have policies & funding to populate The North!

Now economic development & house prices are tied to the need for population always to rise. We fear any imagined decline.

For that, we have always believed we are dependent on immigration.

So it's good to discuss these underlying "truths" / beliefs, central to our future.
To find other options to the perceived need for continual growth, expansion, surpluses at any cost. That seems the only solution provided by the major parties.

But we just get populist 3 word slogans from the major parties, and having no discernable policies is a vote winner…

Ha! Like they argue that in parliament.

I would argue they are a mainstream party as they have representation in parliament.

And for the Greens supporters here. Australia does not have an effective climate change policy as "The Greens" voted against it when Labor put it on the table as it "didn't go far enough" and they wanted 100% renewable energy in an instant.

If The Greens were in government there would be instant mass unemployment as they would implement "cut and run" policies rather than incremental legislation.

@abc: Seems you have very little understanding of the Greens Party or our political systems.

Like most protest parties, they don't expect to form Government themselves, but hope to have an influence.

These parties are born out of protest, generally to support 1 issue. Over time, other issues are added - to gain wider support. They usually don't last long or have a large membership.

As the long dead Democrats used to say - they were there "to keep the bastards (in power) honest".

They attract votes from those who consider they are disenfranchised by the mainstream parties. As such, loyalty to the Party is rarely strong.

That the Greens voted to abide by their principles as you showed - is very rare. Some might think that following the wishes of their Party members is commendable. My understanding is members decide these issues - very democratic.

But you are critical of that? Most parties mainly do what is best for their own survival - doing deals.

As for your hysterical claim of "instant mass unemployment"… that is not what the Party stands for or wants. That is a claim made by major parties to discredit them.

Long ago I worked for the AEC to provide impartial advice on these matters.

Any news on the Dan Andrews Bag. I understand the prototype is full of holes and unable to contain anything of substance.

I once got a similar free bag from a local candidate.. never before in my life have i received so many unsolicited political opinions. Really rustled some jimmies.

  • The crazy political world we live in invented the mathematically stupid and false concept of sustainable growth. As a physicist and mathematician, I can tell you ever increasing growth can only lead to infinity eventually. Even the greens buy into this absurdity. This false concept is what inevitably relies on population growth to fuel it. Greta and the ER kids get this but our political elites of any persuasion dont.
