Hyundai IONIQ 5 is due to go sale in Q3. Pricing will be interesting. Let's hope it not like the Mazda EV currently on sale.

  • I can see these being worth a monza in the future. If u have the $$$$ then buy one & put it in storage. I can't afford atm but good luck to those who can !!

Sorry, what is Tesla Corporate Program

  • I intend to buy Tesla, but it is expensive. I end up bought a Lexus RX350, a very comfortable, reliable, medium-size SUV at 85K, If I go with model X, that will be double.

    • +3

I would call the model X a large SUV. If you want a medium SUV the model Y might be what you want to look at. They should come in at more like 70-75k for base model.

      • +1

Would love to buy a standard range model y at that price but Elon thinks the range is too low and won’t even make SR+ available. It’s long range or performance so the pricing will be above 80k

        • Hmm interesting… you'd think ~230-240 mile range would still work for some (a lot?) of people

          • @snep: As long as you dont need regular interstate driving, 300kms is plenty. I guess Elon is factoring battery degradation over time and the fact that they recommend you only charge to 80%. Even at 200kms, that's more than a couple of days worth if not a week for the average commute

      • I would say, X is medium size equals to RX 350, Y is compact size equals to RAV 4. The rear seat isn't comfortable in Y.

        • +3

You'd be wrong. The X is much bigger than the RX350. And you've never been in the Y, it's not out in Australia, and they haven't brought any for customers to try yet either.

The X is a large SUV and is 6 inches bigger than the RX350 (length wise), which is a lot, and a class size up. The X is actually bigger than the RX350L, which is the extended length model.

The Model X is actually longer than a full sized Landcruiser 200.

          • @[Deactivated]: I googled it, you are right. 2 years ago, Y still not in market. I can't afford X. RX350 will be suitable for me at that time.

            • +2

@paddywide: Still trying to work out how you know the rear seat in the Y isn't comfortable.

              • @[Deactivated]: My wife told me. I didn't notice that, from my blur memory, it is shorter than my rear seat.

                • @paddywide: Your blurry memory of never actually sitting in the car?

Can’t wait till the September. After the drive over the last weekend on a rented Tesla, I recommend everyone to drive it first before you see YouTube free shit.

The drive is the best, charging network which will surprise you, AI/ self driving is goosebump moment technology can every create

    • +7

This. I have let dozens of people take my Model 3 for a spin. Without fail everyone that has driven it has been gobsmaked by how well it drives. Almost without fail every one of them says their next car will be electric. From the young hoons to the 80yo retired lady next door (she really loved how smooth it was). Many countries have announced the phase out of petrol/diesel cars within the next 15-25 years. It really is game over.

The only people I find that are super negative about Teslas are people that have just never driven one.

      • I drove one and I wasn’t amazed. I ended up ordering a RAV4 hybrid and will put a comma two in it.

        • -1

          You didn't drive one.

          • @[Deactivated]: What do you mean? I test drove one in QLD. I took the kids who pretty much started cooking under the glass roof. I don’t know how Tesla owners put up with it tbh.

            • @DryScissors: Sure you did. You mean the double tinted roof glass with an IR reflective coating? In a car with cabin overheat protection, and always on air conditioning?

            • +1

@DryScissors: I have done two summers now carting the kids (8YO an 10YO) around in my Model 3 with the full glass roof. They can get pretty whiny about long car trips, but never once in two years have they every even once said that they were getting hot from the glass roof. Not once.

              • @dtpearson: Not sure what part of Australia you’re from but even the Tesla sales rep who came with us (and who’s also an ex work colleague) acknowledged it. Anyway, I’m not sure why Tesla owners get so tribal about the brand and their cars. It’s just a mediocre car with some nice tech. Just smile and be happy with your purchase. I was simply sharing my experience.

                • +2

@DryScissors: I drove from Sydney to Cairns and back in my Model 3. Long hours in the car. What I noticed was it was hotter driving north with the sun shining through the windscreen onto your body. When driving back, with the sun behind, not a problem.
So it's not really the roof, which has a quite extreme tint, but just the windscreen.
Turn up the AC and it's not an issue.
Plus, if it's hot while parked, the car will automatically keep the cabin temp below 40. And then when you do go back to your car, you can remotely turn on the AC and have it down to 21 degrees before you get there.

              • @dtpearson: What state are you in?

            • @DryScissors: Never happened. I live in Central QLD where the sun will roast you in two seconds flat and throughout summer it has never been a problem for myself or any of the myriad of passengers I've had in the car.

Unless your kids are 7 foot tall and their heads touched the warm roof this is a fabrication.

              • @apiecost: All good. I’m honestly glad you’re enjoying your car. I didn’t…. And that’s okay.

Edit: After reading about the heat issues on the Tesla motors club forums, I see that you can get shades and put the fan up to 8+ to counter the affect. So at least there’s a solution.

These are worse for the environment than bitcoin! Screw Elon and his cronies.
Give me a Porsche Taycan any day over one of these.

    • +2

How are they bad for the environment? But agreed, if I had an extra $150k lying around, on top of the $65k for this, I'd be considering the Taycan too.

    • id rather drive a Kia then this crap

      • +1

I'd rather a than, than a then, but maybe that's just me?

    • +3

How is a Taycan not as bad for the environment as a Tesla?

      • -6

They are both bad for the environment, they mostly still run on coal and the batteries use rare earth like a mofo which is killing rual China and many other places. (It’s not just ev cars it’s everything from phones to solar batteries) coal is actually better in the long run compared to the devastation of rare earth mining.

        • +2

That's totally up to the owner. If you have solar or pay for Greenpower then not really. Even if it was totally powered by coal, it's still better than using fossil fuels, though obviously not as much.

          • +1

            @bradenpd:

Even if it was totally powered by coal, it's still better than using fossil fuels

            Coal is a fossil fuel

            • @Baysew: Sorry, better than using a petrol I should've said.

        • -2

Specifically which rare earth metals do the batteries use? Because I certainly can't think of any?

          • @[Deactivated]: Not sure why I'm getting downvoted. Lithium Ion cells absolutely do not have rare earth metals. Maybe throwing around catch phrases without actually understanding them isn't the best idea?

    • Me too. Can I get one for 60 odd k's?

    • Tesla fanbois drinking Elon’s kool-aid.

      • I feel Tesla is going through their Iphone 4/5 phase where they were still ahead of the competition and could justify their costs.
the next couple of years are going to be their Iphone 6/7 phase where they're good, but the competition has caught up and now is a viable option cost wise.

The final straw will be in 5 years when the Chinese/Korean/Japanese alternatives undercut Tesla in features and performance but aren't quite as polished as Tesla is.

        Much like Android.

      • +1

They are happy to just hold my order until 1st September to get the benefit. In fact Tesla sent all the NSW people who had orders in a text this morning to opt in. Great customer service to be honest

  • Completely support the EV movement, sick of breathing in car exhaust fumes in the city, however I'll be waiting till 2030 before I consider one. I'm not a fan of paying more to be a beta tester.

    • You're in luck. This car is a 4th generation car from Tesla, and it just had an update. It's way past beta. Take it for a drive, you'll see. Fantastic car, even the base model. Blows a 320i/330i or C300 out of the water in every way.

      • I have taken it for a drive, my mate owns the long range performance version. I personally want to wait till it's more mature though. I still think they have quite a bit of room to improve.

        • There's a long range, and then there is a performance. Two different models.

Not sure what you mean by more mature, it bests the best of the Germans in the same class, and they ruled the roost for the last 30 years.

Specifically what do you think needs maturation?

  • +1

can i get the LONG RANGE edition and still qualify !?

    • Haven’t seen details of how the price is measured, but it will go close with the stamp duty exemption.

  • How's the battery in retaining charge? I do about a lil less than 400km/month. A tank of fuel usually last me over a month.

    • They loose about 1% per day sitting around. But if you are only doing 400k/month there is not much savings over a IC car, just nicer to drive and never have to visit a petrol station again :-)

      • +2

1% per day is not correct. Assuming you don't check the app often or have sentry mode on, it's less than that.

        • That is what I have experienced in my M3P, but only over a 1-2 week period with sentry off, at a high state of charge. No idea if it goes into a deeper sleep at low battery % or over longer time periods.

    • +1

  • +2

Not going through 4 pages of comments to see if this has already been pointed out, but read this:

But this extra support will be counterbalanced by new fees to be paid by electric vehicle drivers, with the NSW government becoming the latest jurisdiction to introduce a road user fee for electric vehicles, similar to a new per-kilometre tax introduced in Victoria. It is understood that the introduction of a per-kilometre tax on electric vehicles in New South Wales has been ‘deferred’ and will commence in 2027.

  • +1

How long do people who spend $60,000 on a new car normally keep their cars?

2027 could be a couple of owners away.

    • There's actually a further clause, don't know which will occur first

or when EVs make up at least 30% of new car sales

2027 is only just over 5 years away when this is introduced. If you're doing that well you can spend $60,000 on a car every 2-3 years I'd argue the tax wouldn't be that much of an issue.
I'm not a car owner, but I couldn't imagine losing that much on depreciation so often.

      • If you're doing that well you can spend $60,000 on a car every 2-3 years I'd argue the tax wouldn't be that much of an issue

        That’s a fair call.

        • A lot of those ppl really aren't that well off, they may be able to afford it but not really that easily, many if not most are just being conned by the nature of recycled lease plans where the salesman gets to say "look at this great deal, you can get a newer dearer car at the same monthly repayment you're already paying!!!". Conveniently this is after they deduct the trade in value of the existing car and forget to mention that if you just kept the bloody car you wouldn't be paying those same monthly repayments much longer.

          • @Joku:

A lot of those ppl really aren't that well off

It's true that a lot of people buy on credit to appear/feel that they're doing better than they are, either way they're still folks who are unlikely to be put off by the road tax.

The lastest ones are made in China, the initial batches were from Fremont USA.

          • @Grok: I'm no sympathiser with some communist dictatorship, buuut when u think about it the chineeese ones are probably made by a better skilled / more careful workforce. If you look at USA car factories some of the workers look like tattooed meth addicts … Just sayin
