I can wait longer than 73 days to own a poorly built and engineered car with out of date technology.
Rather the Chinese BYDs when that arrive.

    • +3

      "out of date technology" lmao

      • Lack of LIDAR for cruise control/'notauto-pilot'. A $30k Volkswagen has it so why not an overpriced Scalextric?

        • I believe you mean radar not lidar, I'm not sure of any 30k Volkswagen with lidar.

Radar can provide conflicting information to what the cameras see, so what are you supposed to believe? A common one is radar gets confused by overpasses/bridges. Further radar just tells you there's an object ahead, whereas cameras can tell you exactly what that object is and have different behaviours for different objects.

Having radar doesn't automatically make a car better at automated driving, as long as the functionality is there why does it matter if it has radar or not?

          • +1

@DvApps: Also, these cars all have radar. Only US built cars have the radar delete. But blank 404 has no idea what he's talking about and no idea what out of date technology is.

        • Musk has laid his bets on a vision only system.

          • @xylarr: And that vision only system works wonders in Autopilot !

    • Interesting, what's the BYD have over the tesla?

      • A navigation system that's not confused by the moon?

        • What else? And how much would they cost compared to tesla?

  • +5

Jump on board guys ! You won't be disappointed with a car such as a tesla ! šŸ’™ #teamblue

  • +4

The only reason I can think of to buy Tesla over any other EV brand is there SC and DC network. Which is specific to Tesla.

Recycling batteries is possible. Both China and EU are regulating this.

Production emissions are higher for EVs but over the life of the cars, they are a third lower than ICE.

In any case, a step in the right direction. Stop trolling and lobbing Saudi agenda šŸ˜¹

    • +3

That and their cars are superior to all other EVs right now.

      • Bit debatable there - EV6, Ioniq 5 are catching up. Battery tech is by far top notch but the other cars are slightly better in aesthetics, and in some cases functionality (exc FSD ofc but not everyone wants that yet). SR+ is a gem right now with the incentives - nothing comes close atm. This will change in less than a year

        • +2

Catching up, sure, but still behind. Of all the EV manufacturers on the market, Hyundai have realised that making an EV is about efficiency, they are the market leader behind Tesla. The Europeans don't get it yet. Lucid and Rivian do, they're the real competition.

          • @[Deactivated]: Lucid and Rivian in Australia - I think will depend on price point. VW, Hyundai and Kia I reckon will be the biggest competitor for Tesla.

Mercedes, BMW and Audi are all playing catch-up in Aussieland.

            • +1

@Thy-San: Hyundai and Kia and VW are not in the same class as Tesla, they are not competitors. The Kia/Hyundai cars are definitely the most technologically evolved EVs after the Teslas though.

  • +3

When you factor in the fuel saving and maintenance cost over 5-10 years.
No brainer, if you shopping against BMW, Merc and Audi cars.
Euro cars will kill you on service and maintenance parts alone.

  • Curious how this will affect the current available stock of SR+ in NSW. Maybe be able to snag a showroom discount and skip the wait.

    • Donā€™t think Tesla does showroom discount

      • They did with S and X (seen a few invoices), but never been a thing with the 3 that I know of.

    • +1

There is no showroom discount. But you can pick up inventory and skip the wait. There are cars sitting in inventory right now, but they disappear quickly.

      • they do sell the demo stock for discounts but otherwise you are correct, no haggling

    • You can bet on September 1st there will be none left in the country and a long wait list.

  • Great timing. Suggested to my wife to upgrade our 2013 VW tiguan to a new car before this was announced. Most likely go with electric as we have solar and powerwall.

Vic gov has pretty much killed EV adoption due to the mileage tax

  • Hi

Does anyone know if Toyota Hybrids are included with this rebate as they still take petrol. I was going to buy a brand new one next week but not sure if I should wait if they are included with the rebate.

    Thanks in advance

    • No they are not unfortunately, full electric vehicles only.

    • The only concession you get for burning fuel, is the warm in a glow feeling from knowing you are supporting the National Party, the right wing Liberal Party and Rupert Murdock!

So hypothetically… How would a VIC resident buy one in NSW with NSW rego?

    Asking for a mate…

  • Is cashback capped on this?

  • +1

I like the 3 but waiting for the Ioniq 5 - Price looks like it will be about the same but it is expected to have V2G (Vehicle to Grid). This means it will also be giving me an equivalent to the Tesla Powerwall as well that will use my Solar. I know it will effect the battery life, but as a low km user it makes it a $12k better value at the same price. Charge network for non-Tesla is going to be a showstopper for me possibly.

V2G was the killer app I was hoping for on battery day [Tesla's or VWs]. It is the killer app for longer lasting/million mile batteries.

    K

    • You gonna love ford F-150 lightning :)

    • +1

I don't think it has V2G. It has V2L - vehicle to load. So you can power your laptop, or camping fridge, etc… but not feed into the grid. Very big difference and changes the equation around ROI.

  • been admiring and Waiting for KIA EV6 - hopefully, i can make my decision then

  • Did Tesla increase the prices of the Model 3? I am on their site and am getting a quote of $70,108 drive away for the Model 3 SRV. Was it supposed to be $67,798 previously?

    • Did you choose business use?

    • +2

When you switch to LR then switch back to SR+, the wheel selection remain 19". Need to change it back to the 18".

      • Ah this was the reason. Thanks mate

  • Would like to own one, specially if QLD government adds some incentive towards it. My only worry is charging at home. I have solar (7.2kW) but the car will be driven to work and parked there during the day, it will be charged over the night aka feeding in from the grid. That solution isn't that green/filling up with sunshine :\

I may get a powerwall, but even then I don't think a powerwall will be able to charge + keep the house powered at night.

    • +2

Just buy 2 and rotate them daily

    • +2

Any chance of your work allowing you to put up a solar charging carpark? Solar panels get dumped by the tonne and are easily obtainable for free. Put up a basic frame. Then you just need a Hybrid inverter with off grid / EPS support. Most inverters will need 5 panels as a minimum.
Every worksite should really have had this 10 years ago.

      • Where would you get free solar panels?

        • Anywhere at the moment. Anyone upgrading an old system. Look up a major installer, their skip bin and all around it will be full of them. Most would be glad if you take them off their hands.

    • Charge with solar during the day on the weekend

    • QLD offers reduced stamp duty of 2%. It's not much but something at least. I'm looking to order one and I'd be in the same situation as you. At least for half the year it could charge before and after work off my panels, but I'm not concerned about the green aspect of it. I just want it because it's a bloody brilliant car, that will require minimal ongoing servicing and I like the idea of never needing a petrol station again, have you driven one?

      • Nope, I plan to order one 1st September for the free stamp duty and 3k rebate. It's 5-6k saving. No brainer

        • Nope, I plan to order one 1st September for the free stamp duty and 3k rebate. It's 5-6k saving. No brainer

If you don't agree with the VIC Electric vehicle road use tax (ZLEV road-user charge) here is your chance to do something about it:

    https://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/council/petitions/electronā€¦

  • Has anyone been able to pre-order to secure the discount, and beat the delays this might cause? it's only for the first 25,000 EV sales, I wonder how long it will take to reach that number.

    • +1

Tesla rep told me to put the $150 deposit down now. This will get you a place in the queue. They note that you don't wish to register until September. They can't guarantee you'll receive the car before the 25,000 EV sales is up because this covers all EV sales not just Tesla.

      • All ev is all full electric cars. Not many but Tesla right now. 25k will last ages

  • How does the rebate work? Do I buy the car like normal then pay the reduced stamp duty when putting a rego plate on it? Also, the news has

"From 1 September 2021, electric cars priced below $78,000 will be exempt from stamp duty and buyers of the first 25,000 examples priced below $68,750 will receive a taxpayer-funded $3000 discount"
    https://www.drive.com.au/news/buyers-of-electric-cars-in-nswā€¦

That means, if I buy a Tesla with full self-drive option (cost $10,100), the entire car will be priced more than $68,750, therefore I must buy the care without the said option and later add that option on when finalised stamp duty, right?

    • +1

Yep, that's right. Otherwise like you said, it will be over the threshold.

    • FSD is a waste of money.
Tesla may never get there because of the side camera B pillar placement

  • Does this mean that the 2nd hand market for this model will drop considerably after the 1st of Sept?

  • +1

Some bad news, I have put in an order and got a message from Tesla that the NSW government hasn't been able to pass the Electric Vehicles Bill due to lockdowns.

    • This starts on September 1st though, or are you saying even after September 1st? If so, that's terrible news. I was so keen to order on the 1st. Did they mention another ETA? I assume a bunch of orders will now be cancelled too. (profanity) this COVID crap is annoying.

      • Yeah, Tesla said it will most likely be after September 1st. No mention of an ETA but the rep I spoke to mentioned that they are getting a shipment in September so when it does pass, there will be inventory and shorter waiting times depending on the model.

    • Looks like it will be delayed until after parliament re-sits 7th September: https://evcentral.com.au/nsw-ev-incentives-set-for-delay-dueā€¦

  • +3

It is just a short delay till it gets passed in the NSW parliament.
Not worth canceling orders and losing your guaranteed rebate placement.

As long as NSW is in Covid crisis lockdowns,
even if you paid in full right now it wouldn't be easy to collect / take delivery of your car nor enjoy weekend joyrides…

    • +2

My Tesla dealer is out of the 5km radius so I don't see it happening until the current restrictions are lifted.

  • +1

If anyone is thinking about buying early in case of missing out on the rebate, there has only been about 7200 vehicles sold in the first 6 months of 2021 across all of Australia:
    https://www.news.com.au/technology/motoring/motoring-news/teā€¦

    • The rebate is across all EV and Hybrid vehicles, not just Teslaā€¦ I took my delivery yesterday and can confirm they have hundreds of cars ready to be delivered !

  • +2

is it worth buying a Tesla if I don't have have a nearby charging station in around 3km (i live in Sydney)? Sounds like a hassle as i usually take my car to nearby areas.

    • How many kms would you drive a day?

    • +4

If you come home by 6pm and leave at 8am the next day, that's 14 hours of charging you can get.

With a normal 240V outlet you will get 9km of charge per hour.

      14 hours x 9km = 126km

So unless you are travelling more than 126 km a day you're fine to charge from home with the portable charger.

Alternatively get a Wall Charger installed at home (sparky required) and it'll only take 4-5 hours for a full charge.

    • If you don't have garage charging then it's not really worth the hassle. You miss the big advantage that you have a "full tank" every morning and only think about chargers for a long trip (which the nav planner takes care of for you).

Things will improve with parking garages having plugs/powerwall and a lot more fast charge points.

  • +1

so, is everyone waiting till the bill passes then ordering? My mate who ordered before he realised this bill thing delay and also free delivery with some professional subscription said Tesla wouldn't rewrite the invoice or re-date it?

    • +1

I bought mine and was told they wouldn't invoice me until after September 1st. Got a notification to choose a delivery day today in 2 week's time.
No invoice so far, so we will see.

    • How'd he get free delivery? Does he work for a company that's part of the corporate program? I've been trying to get free delivery. I spoke to Tesla Parramatta, they said they have been told the 7th, and he said I could order any time as it's just like a pre-order. The delivery date will be the date used for the invoice, and they won't be delivered before the 7th so people qualify. If the government delays it again then I'm not sure. I'll be calling them if it's delayed once again to make sure I don't get screwed by delivery date.

"Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, NSW Parliament has been unable to resume its normal operations this month. As a result, some legislation will unfortunately be delayed. This includes the Electric Vehicles (Revenue Arrangements) Bill 2021 (the Bill).

The Bill is a key component of the NSW Governmentā€™s Electric Vehicle Strategy, which includes a number of incentives that will reduce the cost of electric vehicles purchased in NSW.

To avoid potential delays to the uptake of EVs, the NSW Treasurer has announced that stamp duty exemptions and rebates will retrospectively be available from 1 September 2021.

However, the availability of any of these incentives is contingent on all aspects of the Electric Vehicles (Revenue Arrangements) Bill 2021 passing Parliament when it resumes."
