Best value premium router out there in my opinion, providing 4 LAN ports is enough for you.

    • 4 LAN ports is not uncommon
The 2.5 gigabit port is special but not uncommon with this price bracket

    • If 4 ports is not enough? Can I spend a bit more and avoid buying a 4 or 8 port switch to plug into this? Any routers to recommend?

      • +2

        ax88u then?

        • +1

          wow!
I didn't realise any routers came with 8 ports any more

        • Nice! Thanks.

  • +1

    Sweet. Thanks

  • +1

Bought one. Thanks OP. Finally can upgrade my ac68u (still going strong though).

  • +3

FYI this is better than the AX88U (even though the name suggests otherwise).

    • What is it better than AX88U?

      • +1

Wi-fi Speeds according to DongKnows / has a 2.5gigabit port instead of 1. It is also newer (2020 release) vs 2019 release.

        • +2

AX88U has 4x4 vs this 3x3 or something like that if I remember correctly.

          • +3

            @reactor-au: RT-AX86U
            2.4Ghz 3x3 Wi-Fi 6: up to 861 Mbps.
            5Ghz 4x4 Wi-Fi 6: up to 4804 Mbps.

            RT-AX88U
            2.4Ghz 4x4 Wi-Fi 6: up to 1148 Mbps.
            5Ghz 4x4 Wi-Fi 6: up to 4833 Mbps.

            • @Twix: RT-AX88U
              5Ghz 4x4 Wi-Fi 6: up to 4804 Mbps. Fixed.

          • +8

@reactor-au: That doesn't mean anything when real world tests show the 86U having better range and higher throughput.

            • +1

@brimmy11: It will depend on how many devices are sharing as well as whether you plan on doing any mesh type setup.

    • +3

Hands up if you think this router only have 3 antennas? There are 4 of them if you look closely. I always thought the AX88 was a better model until I read the review. The difference ain't much but the AX86 still came ahead with the speed and has a 2.5 Giga connection.

      • RT-AX86U has 3 external antenna and 1 antenna on the inside.

      • +1

Also, the RT-AX86U supports WAN aggregation. You could feed it two separate 50/25 connections which would aggregate to 100/50.

  • +1

    Is this AU stock?

  • I bought the one from wireless1 for $370 a few minutes back. Return or not!

    • +1

Message wireless1, they usually good with after sales otherwise just cancelled it if it hadn’t been dispatched.

      • Yes, I have ebayplus, so should be easy to return

  • -1

    Pitty it's only a single 2.5gbps port.

    • +1

Nothing has any more than that though. That's something you'll have to unfortunately need to wait a fair while for by the look of things.

  • +2

will this make me into a god gamer

    • +3

i think you need a gaming chair for that

      • +1

        Gaming Throne.

    • You need the latest GPU for that unfortunately.

    • How many RGB's do you have?

  • +1

    Got one. Thanks, OP.

  • These codes do not work for me? States the code cannot be applied to my order.

  • +2

Currently use nighthawk r7000, worth upgrade?

    • Same here. R7000 is fine but I'm moving to an aimesh setup

    • +1

Just replaced my R7000 to AX88U. Big upgrade in terms of wifi speed and coverage. But not sure if it is bcoz my R7000 too old and dropping the wifi performance.

The price is fairly reasonable for wifi6 at the moment even if wifi6e is on the way, first release will be in a rocket high price. As long as ASUS routers (some) has AIMesh, if you are upgrading to wifi6e, this one can using as a mesh node. So very good timing to upgrade now.

  • Hey guys, does anyone know if an NBN VOIP service will work with this?

    • Doesn't list voip support.

    • There is no VoIP port but there are ways to get VoIP. Who provides your VoIP service?

      • I have ABB now. Do you know if VOIP can be setup using my old handsets that used the telephone plug?

        • For Aussie BB and old handsets purchase a VoIP ATA and you plug Ethernet from it into the RT-AX86U LAN port. Just so you know TPG, Telstra, Optus and others lock you into using the ISP modem for VoIP. To avoid this you can use Crazytel or Siptalk with the VoIP ATA.

  • A bit regret after getting the AX88U instead of AX86U
but I dont have a NAS that can do 2.5Gbps port…. ah well….
maybe wait for a few years and get the next generation

    • I'm not too fussed, I'll probably get more out of the extra LAN ports on the AX88U than the 2.5G right now personally, plus it was a little cheaper.

And I guess the nice thing is when I upgrade in future I can probably take advantage of the mesh feature.

  • +1

any chance the AX86U would be around this price (or lower) in a few months? have spent way too much over the last few days lol.

    • +1

Same here, plus my internet speed is limited to 100 mbps, not sure what to do with this router.

    • If you're thinking a few months ??? Then Black Friday/Cyber Monday it is ;-)

      • Good point. Like many OzBargainers I’ve spent way too much recently, particularly on the Prime Days, buying questionable items - many will remain in their sealed boxes for a while. Have to resist and save up for the Black Friday.

        • Then more sealed boxes after black friday… 😅

      • you may be correct sir! I shall wait until then!

  • Is AX86U the best router at this price point? I always wanted a fancy router and this might go well with my fancy Embody chair ;)

    Edit: Sold out, damn!

  • Currrntly have an AC86U bridged with the Orbi RBK50. Will this be an upgrade over my current system?

  • Can someone please explain how a gaming router would be better than my TPG router? I connect via wifi over a 5ghz connection when pc gaming and connection over online games is fine, but when going to the 2.4ghz connection its laggy

    • +2

when they say "gaming" they just mean that it's designed for faster speeds, lower ping etc. your TPG router is probably a cheap router if it's supplied by the ISP, as far as i'm aware no ISP gives you a great router (even if they did you would probably still be paying full RRP over your plan).

your 2.4 ghz connection might be laggy because there are a lot of devices using that frequency like microwaves, appliances, neighbours who have their own 2.4 ghz wifi band being broadcasted, 5ghz is a lot faster because less devices use that frequency so there is less traffic, though i think it has a shorter range than 2.4 ghz.

you can check how many people are on the same band as you using an app, i think i used wifi analyzer a while ago, but i found out that i had a load of neighbours using wifi and none of the bands were free on 2.4 ghz frequency so i was screwed on that front.

    • +2

Can someone please explain how a gaming router would be better than…

Anything with 'gaming' in it usually means it looks like it came from the batcave to appeal to teenage boys and comes at a price premium for no reason.

  • Thanks OP! For anyone interested…the Asus RT-AX86U is now back in stock.

    • Damn I just missed out again. Hopefully they add some more units today!

  • Thanks OP! Managed to snap one up when they restocked this morning.

    • Me too! Thanks OP! Might be worth occasionally checking to see if any more stock pops up

  • Should I bother upgrading from my 68U?

  • This absolute beast of a router will cost you about $10 less :)
