[VIC] NetGear Nighthawk MK63 AX1800 4 Stream Mesh Wi-Fi 6 System (3 Pack) $190 in-Store @ Officeworks (Selected Stores)

860

Spotted this at my local officeworks (Campbellfield Vic)

Seems a good price considering the 2 pack version went viral at $145, and 3 pack was posted at $269 just yesterday.

Edit: register guy said there was stock in Bundoora and Airport west. So probably not just Campbellfield

Spotted one too yesterday, thought about posting but only one left. Bought it, extremely happy so far. Tested my TPG NBN on speedtest.net, got 500 mbps download speed on my iPhone on wifi. Thought that must be an error of some sort!

Edit: Forgot to mention I picked it up in Weatherill Park, NSW

    • Hey mate, Were you able to connect straight ethernet cable from the wall to your router? Or you have a modem in between?

I have TPG FTTB and struggling to make it work as I keep getting no internet. I have followed instructions mentioned TPG community, they aren't helping as well.

By the way 500 mbps that is massive

      • +1

Do you use TPG VoIP phone to make calls?

        FTTB = Wall —— TPG VDSL2 modem —— Ethernet —— MK63 router.

        • -1

No, the MK63 has a modem. Thus it is NBN wall unit-> cable-> MK63 modem (which is MR63). Don’t use it for voice.

          • @Xizo: Nah the MK63 is a router only with Wi-Fi and has no VDSL2 modem built-in for FTTB and FTTN. The R in MR63 stands for router. Your setup example applies to FTTC, FTTP and HFC.

The Netgear Nighthawk MK63 is a three-piece mesh router system that supports Wi-Fi 6 and consists of a primary router and two secondary ‘satellites’.

            • +1

@Twix: Yeah I think this is right.

        • No.. just for internet

          • +1

@akstatic: Choice 1 - Plugin Ethernet from the WAN port of the TPG VDSL2 modem to the MK63 Internet labeled WAN port. Login to the TPG VDSL2 modem, enable bridge mode. Login to the MK63 router, put in your TPG username and password, go to advanced settings and set up a bridge for a VLAN tag group. TPG use the VLAN ID of 2.

Choice 2 - Plugin Ethernet from the LAN port of the TPG VDSL2 modem to the MK63 labeled Ethernet port. Don't change anything on the TPG VDSL2 modem. This is called a double NAT. For casual browsing and Netflix you can get away with double NAT. Double NAT can break access to Plex, cameras, remote access, servers, home automation and more.

Choice 3 - Plugin Ethernet from the LAN port of the TPG VDSL2 modem to the MK63 labeled Ethernet port. Don't change anything on the TPG VDSL2 modem. Configure MK63 as the access point. This method turns off guest Wi-Fi, QoS, UPnP and more.

@Twix: Thanks for the detailed response mate!

I have got Choice 2 enabled at the moment. I do not have other devices at the moment. I will worry about it when I need to :-)

              Cheers.

            • +1

@Twix: It’s a shame that setting these in AP mode means you lose all those features, especially Parental Mode.

You don’t with TP-Link mesh (or at least not with their VR1600v)

            • @Twix: Tried option 1 again. Didn't work. Put TPG modem in bridge mode, deleted ppoe setting in. and put username password in netgrear and added vlan group. It kept complaining about internet not available. I wish there was a definitive settings somwhere and TPG doesn't support this when I spoke with them.

              • @akstatic: Put the PPPoE login back to the TPG modem. ISPs only support their own equipment.

                • +1

@Twix: Ohh I was following TPG community and there was an image of disabled ppoe. Hence I deleted and I thought it makes sense to put TPG credentials in only one router. I will try that. Appreciate your help mate!

      • Same, I’m FTTB. The unit comes with three pieces, one is a modem, two are satellite units. When you set up the modem (using the iOS app), you can choose advanced setup then PPoE, that’ll enable you to put in your username and password. Should connect then.

        • +1

Okay. My understanding is that it doesn't have a modem, it is only router. Anyway glad it worked for you.

          • +2

@akstatic: Apologies, I definitely confused it. It is a Router. However, I still hooked it directly to the NBN wall unit via cable to the internet port on the router. The light was orange, had no internet and it asked me for my username and password in the app, then it worked.

And this is my speed test result

    • Only 500Mbps? I get 700Mbps+ on my iPhone with an AC router…

  • +1

Edit spelling: Interesting discount! Got my interest peaked in the product, so I looked up a few reviews. Apparently its got a good connection speed, until you move your device, which might cause significant drops until you disconnect/reconnect. Source CNET: https://www.cnet.com/news/best-wi-fi-router/

Personally I am looking for something to provide speed through my townhouse, including upstairs bedrooms. Currently have an old Netgear D6800 (?) sitting in the central open plan downstairs space. But with 4k streaming/gaming I am considering what options network wise provide wireless coverage without physical cabling throughout (old house, limited options).

Did you get one OP, or just community post due to discount?

    Good work either way!

    • +1

MK63 isn't listed in that CNET roundup.

    • Nope just posted it. My unit is tiny it will be a waste. Although I sent it to a few friends and 1 might go later if it’s still available.

    • .. interest piqued

    • +1

i returned mine next day exactly for this reason. Especially bad for two storey houses. Probably that's why heavily discounted, getting really bad reviews.

i got RBK752 much better system I get 900Mbps easily on PC, 600Mbps on the phone. but i wouldn't recommend if you have kids, no parental controls exist and Netgear has been promising an update for over a year now.

  • Does anyone see if it is available & in stock in WA? Thanks.

    • Saw one at office works cockburn on Wednesday

      • +2

        come again….what burn… ?

        • +1

It’s a euphemism for Red Rooster

        • +1

For some reason everyone in Perth insists on pronouncing it CO-Burn. But I refuse, it's clearly spelt Cockburn and I will die on Cockburn hill.

  • +2

Just checked with Bundoora Vic said they said the last one a few hours ago in case anyone was hoping they had stock.

Edit: also QV Russel St store just put their last one aside about 5 mins ago. Damn you ozbargainer who beat me to it!

    • +1

I've either called multiple stores or gone into officeworks 3 or 4 times this year chasing deals that don't have stock in my local/nearby stores.

  • +1

No stores in SEQ seem to be answering their phone. Must be getting smashed by enquiries!

  • CastleHill refusing to price match :(

    • +1

how did you find this product on their site for PM? When I search, I don't see it at all

      • Rang them

  • is it available in SA for the same price?

    • Call your local stores. MK63 router has been removed from OW site.

  • no stock in Hobart, only the MK2 which was full retail.

  • Complete noob at this, but can someone help me out? Technically savvy, and build my own pc's but clueless when it comes to networking (the internet kind)

Looking at upgrading the Optus modem (SAGECOM F@ST 3864V3 HP) I currently have, which is a modem+router. Been using this for the last couple years but the speeds at the extremities of the house are poor (5-Bed single storey, so quite long). I believe this would be a good fit, and not too fussed about getting the max speeds advertised but would like to not have massive drops in speed the further away I am (hence the mesh system). My only concern is being able to retain the landline (VoIP) as I have oldies, so guessing this would work?

NBN Cable -> NBN Box -> Optus Modem (turn off wifi function) -> Split into:
-> Ethernet Output to Netgear Router -> Connect via wifi/ethernet to mesh systems at end of house
->Phone cable (analog) to base receiver of landline handphone

Is this feasible, or would l lose out on the landline using this?
Also the modem would be in the middle of the house, so would effectively have 3 spheres of Wi-Fi, which I hope would keep devices under a strong signal at all times.
Been reading forums trying to resolve this doubt but have read terms that I cannot understand (Double NAT, Bridge issues) so thought I might ask the resident experts here.

    TIA

    • +1

That way keeps the Optus landline working. There are some compromises.

Choice 1 - Plugin Ethernet from the LAN port of the Optus modem to the MK63 labeled Ethernet port. Don't change anything on the Optus modem. This is called a double NAT. For casual browsing and Netflix you can get away with double NAT. Double NAT can break access to Plex, cameras, remote access, servers, home automation and more.

Choice 2 - Plugin Ethernet from the LAN port of the Optus modem to the MK63 labeled Ethernet port. Don't change anything on the Optus modem. Configure MK63 as the access point. This method turns off guest Wi-Fi, QoS, UPnP and more.

      • +1

Dont have any of these: Plex, cameras, remote access, servers, home automation atm (planning on getting camera soon) so I think ill be fine.
I'll read up the definitions of the ones in Choice 2 but think ill be fine nonetheless.

Thanks Twix for the advice, much appreciated and gives me confidence to buy.

        • You can test both. Most likely you want to go with choice 2 for cameras.

          • @Twix: can we just do the bridge mode on the modem? or just turn off NAT function on the modem?

            • @ntt: Bridge mode disables Optus VoIP. If you don't care about that you can use bridge mode for FTTN.

            • +1

@ntt: No bridge mode support on this router.

  • Sold out in Coburg, Airport West and Campbellfield.

I went to the Officeworks Garden City in Brisbane, it was out of stock, but still had the tag for $329. So just be aware that even if the store has stock, probably a good idea to check the actual price.

  • +1

Excellent device and great bang for buck.
I purchased the Orbi equivalent and can’t be happier.
Beware that they don’t play well with devices that are not stationary (mobile, laptop, etc).

    • +1

      Isn’t that a design fault?

    • Disable fast roaming.

Orbi Settings > Advanced > Advanced Setup > Wireless Settings (bottom of page)
Exception: Your home/space is greater than 5,000ft. In larger homes, it is less likely to have satellite signal overlap; overlap = devices rapidly switching.

Optimal Netgear Orbi Router Settings for Signal Strength and Speed

      • +1

Thanks for that, my orbi has problems with our phones, will try this out.

      • This is not an Orbi thus no Fast Roaming option.

  • Found at another store, but they wouldn’t drop from $219

    • That’s still a decent price!

  • I have the 2 pack for $135 in WA, last one thought.. just see if JB will pricematch so zip for $20 off ;)

Pricematched the 2 pack at JB

I just got the last one at midland for $190. No haggling, just scanned at 190

    • They said O’Connor may have one in stock

  • +1

Thanx OP managed to snag last one at williamstown.

  • Has anyone tested if this will get you the full 950Mbps from gigabit NBN on 5Ghz?

    • MK63 can do around 872Mbps with a 2x2 Wi-Fi 6 client.

      https://dongknows.com/amazon-eero-6-vs-netgear-mk62/

      • That’s disappointing, only slightly faster than my 3x3 AC router. What would you recommend for a budget AX router that will do the full 950Mbps?

        • Asus TUF-AX3000. In saying that Wi-Fi speed is not guaranteed and Gigabit plans are best effort.

          • @Twix: Any feedback with the Xiaomi AX routers?

            • @antik: Nah check the previous deal comments.

      • @Twix : I just bought this MK63 AX1800 3 pack . I am on NBN FTTP Superloop.

I want to get rid of my existing Huawei HG659 router and wants to use Primary cube for routing instead.
If you could help me with a query . Can I connect these with my existing hardwirring like : NBN NTD - MK63 AX1800 Main -> Switch -> NVR + MK63 AX1800 Sat -> Switch -> NVidia Shield

        • That should be fine.

  • +3

Thanks OP Price matched at Jb

    • Great effort!

    • +1

Can you please share the receipt?

    • That's great. Product doesn't show up on the OW site, how did you convince the rep to PM?

  • Not sure if they fixed the connection drop issue when mobile via any firmware update. Otherwise, it is an annoying issue.
