I'm not too sure what is with ASUS and all their Gundam themed products of late.

So far they have gone and Gundam themed:

    • Routers
    • Mobos
    • GPU
    • AIO water cooler
    • PSU
    • Case
    • Monitor
    • Headset
    • Mechanical keyboard
    • Mouse
    • Mouse pad

At this point I'm just hoping they don't ASUS theme a space colony and accidentally drop it on Sydney.

That would be one drastic way to get rid of Covid

What's the benefits for the RT-AX86U Zaku II (I've not seen/used it before) compared to the normal RT-AX86U that you can get over $100 cheaper?

Also any reason you would go for this over say the ASUS RT-AX88U that has 8x LAN ports (I think this does have a higher spec WAN port though right?) but then again you can get the RT-AX88U for $399 or under at the moment…

Updated: some links that might be of interest to some:
RT-AX88U: $399 (Believe there are deals on eBay that is better though)

If you prefer the AX86U this might be of interests possibly:

I don't think there are any technical differences—this is just a skin featuring a robot from the popular anime series "Gundam". Only Gundam fans would be interested in this, so it's a rather niche offer…

@fuzzybunn Gotchu, thanks for that, I could not find much difference either but understand just a skin.. fair enough… others that don't care can possibly use the links above for a better price in that case :-)

No technical difference between standard edition and the special ed, like I said, just the skin.

On the AX86U vs AX88U, the 86U has better performance https://www.mbreviews.com/asus-rt-ax88u-vs-rt-ax86u/2/ than the 88U, which also has a bigger footprint and power brick.

I went with the special edition only because it looks better and that red colour, goes faster :D

      • @supersaintly, Cheers for that!

I currently have the AX88U and it's great… I was thinking of possibly getting another one as my home PC is quite a distance from the main router and trying out the mesh function on the Asus units… I'm wondering is the second unit I get should be the AX86U now and put it in between my PC and the AX88U…

My PC is running the Intel AX200 that was mentioned below so it might possibly work well and then the mesh between the Asus I suspect should be good.

The RT-AX88U performs well and it offers a stable throughput (you also get far more ports for your wired clients, mostly gaming devices), but the RT-AX86U is simply better in almost every test, especially with an AX200 client.

Gundam joke: It's three times as fast!

But really no, there's no functional benefit.

  • Any good deal on the standard RT-AX86U?

Sorry, I feel strange with the title —- Reading "Zaku II (Gundam) Edition" is like "Venom (Spiderman) Edition"

Yeah, I got a standard RT-AX82U from Amazon last week for ~$260. Not sure the extra $230 really makes it a bargain..

Everyone knows that red goes faster :)

paid $311 (amazon black friday) for my AX86U late last year. i'd wait for that and not pay so much for a skin
    otherwise a nice router

  • No DSL version model around? hard time finding them (I need it in an awkward spot so dont want to run 2 devices there)

    • I don't think so. That's the only reason I am clinging to my Dlink DSL-4320L which is crap in terms of updates and support.
