  • jump on the 32" deal the other day, realising it takes a month or so for delivery.

  • This or Samsung 49 ultrawide?

  • I prefer the height of the 32" compared to 34".
I think the height of this 38" is slightly shorter (0.8 inch) than the 32"?
So it is kind of like having a 32" but longer.

  • Nice monitor, my GTX 1080 cant run this and I cant afford a new 3080/6800XT now. Will wait for the GPU prices to drop first.

    • Hopefully someone can explain the gpu requirements being so high?

      • +3

Lots of pixels @ high settings = high end GPU. You can still use a low/mid tier card but will need to compromise on quality and/or FPS

      • High resolution and 144hz

      • +1

This monitor has a resolution that is higher than a 34" ultrawide. Approaching 4K territory - but not quite there. You need a decent GPU to drive higher FPS and settings.

        • Thanks all, I guess I was trying to get an idea of min requirements for general awareness.. 3060/70 onwards ? Or even higher 6800xt/3080

          • @IamaCam: 3060 noway, Though 3070/ti would be minimum depending on games, I would probably not pair it with anything less than the 3080/6800XT. You are compromising too much on a 3060.

          • @IamaCam: you need 3080 ti or higher and even they cant push this to 120 + hz
you are better of getting 240 hz, 32 inch monitor thats 1440 p - with a new gpu like 3080 it will last you ages

            • @botchie: Thanks man! This means I'll stick with my xiaomi 34 lol

              • @IamaCam: i would get Samsung g7 but up to you :)
                its glorious

            • +1

@botchie: Not entirely correct. It depends more on the games you play and the settings you have set.

I easily get 150FPS in the games I play on this with my 2080ti.

Games like LOL, overwatch, DOTA, CSS etc that are well optimised and don’t take much GPU power will easily run above refresh rate with a 1080 etc depending on in game settings.

              • @Pelicannn: Hey man, do you happen to have Rocket League installed? wondering what sort of frames you are getting on it. Thanks

          • @IamaCam: I mainly play apex legends on this with a 3070. Get about 100 fps during drop and 144 during game play.

  • Anyone know the difference between the audio specs? I understand a headphone out jack, but what is the audio line-out port used for?

    1X Audio line-out jack (rear)
    1 x Headphone-out jack (bottom)

    • External speakers.

    • I assume to run the HDMI / DP audio into an amp or powered external speaker. If something has a headphone out and another audio out the other one is usually relatively unamplified and not affected by the volume setting on the device, so it can be passed to a powered amp at a predictable volume level. Also called "line out".

  • +3

Don't install AWCC to control lighting as it will consume all your system resources

    • omg I know right? it would constantly eat 20% of my i9 9900K just because… the only way to stop is to open the Alien FX control panel, and click the FX tab across the top and it'll instantly stop.

a full uninstall of all of Dell's shitty software is a must

    • Seconded, it's appalling. But are you suggesting there's an alternative? The lighting effects can be kinda cool, I just disabled it all because of the shoddy software.

  • Really sad these alienware Dell monitors don't have the SRGB Clamp feature in them or I would be pulling the trigger!

    • Whats an Srgb clamp? is that like the srgb setting in the monitor controls??

      • +1

These monitors can display colours above and beyond the SRGB colour space (which most things digital are most commonly using, eg the internet), which is awesome in the right setting, however much of the digital world still only displays content in the SRGB colour space, eg the internet/web browser). With these high colour coverage monitors, they will have a tendency to over-saturate colours when displaying this type of content. Many HDR monitors have a mode known as 'SRGB Clamp' built in that tells the monitor to tone the colours down. And sadly, it's the one feature that Dell seems to have forgotten about with most of their current gaming line up. If you just game or don't care about colour accuracy then no worries, you might even like the over saturation, but if you're in a line of work for example that needs colour accuracy then I'd recommend doing a little more digging into this feature and colour calibration in general.

AMD have also released a similar feature for some of their Radeon cards too, however Nvidia have not yet done so (fingers crossed). Seems like in Windows 11 they have mentioned some HDR features are coming, which may help as well.

  • paid almost 2k for one of these, its a nice screen. And for anyone questioning AMD support, I have an RX6900 with Adaptive Sync on. (not that I notice much difference)

  • Ahhhh. Been trying really hard to hold off buying this monitor since building my PC, but might pull the trigger on this. My wallet is feeling really light with all these spending on PC parts.

  • oh yes…im sure that tax return will help

  • this an overkill for just general browsing / office work?
i feel upgrade to 34UW from the current 32 is not worth it so was looking at 38UW.

    • im getting mainly to WFH - not sure a 2070super will make gaming on 38" any fun.

    • Depends on how much you have open at the same time. I have both the 34 and 38 side by side, and its a good setup, I remote into work on the 38 and then have browsers etc etc open on the 34. If you are switching between Outlook/word/excel other stuff a lot, then I think its worth it. The thing that made me want it is it has more vertical realestate, so word docs or Outlook just works better then you can see more vertically.

  • +4

    wife will kill me.

    • +1

      RIP

    • +7

easier to buy and be forgiven than convincing to buy

      • Worth.

      • Same mentality I used when buying $2k wheels for my car.

    • Time for you to decide who you love more. Your wife or 38" glorious inches. Number of months of warranties your wife has : zero.

    • +2

If she does, can I have the screen?

  • Great price mate! I’m about to open mine I bought on the weekend. It stings a little bit, but I ended up paying pretty much the same price as this stacking 3 or 4 different coupons/vouchers.

Amazing negotiation skills you have - might need to try and get a kickback from them I reckon.

    • -1

No kickback from them unfortunately. That's what BAM is for…

  • I recently got the LG Ultragear 34", how does this one compare?

    • +1

is it a QHD? or a 1080p or a 4k monitor? remember the playstation 5 is not the Xbox series X it doesn't support QHD 2560x1440 resolution, so you choices are 1080p or 4k FPS can play a key role also but from what I can see there is no 4k monitor yet that supports 120hz over hdmi 2.1 because none have 2.1 ports.

at the moment I am deciding on whether to get a high frame rate QHD 1440p 165hz display or not because i need to decide if I want to run at 4k 60hz or 1080p 120hz. I don't want to fork out for a new 4K 120hz TV either lol.

      • It's a QHD, I struggled to find 4k monitors that were 34" so settled for the ultragear. I love it so far, but this one has an amazing price

  • +1

Worthwhile upgrade from the Xiaomi monitor?

    • Considered it, but didn't pull the trigger after looking at some reviews this arvo.

If you can sell the Xiaomi and you've got a 30 series Nvidia card to make use of G sync Ultimate and res/hz specs then it might be worth it - you're getting fairly close to 4K resolution with this bad boy, fantastic colours (if not a bit saturated), G-sync and HDR. The minor downsides seem to be that the local dimming implementation has fairly large 'local' zones which can look a bit sub par in super dark games/movies and the HDR is good but not great.

    • I upgrade from the Xiaomi and I would say no when you consider the price premium for what you get.

The main upgrades are the screen size, higher resolution, image clarity during gameplay (faster pixel response times), g-sync ultimate and better colors. A part from the obvious screen size and resolution the rest are not mind blowingly better to me. I'm still genuinely impressed with what you get from the Xiaomi monitor.

In saying all that it is an amazing monitor when you compare it to the direct competitors. At this price it easily comes out on top vs LGs Ultragear line.

The reason I upgraded, I do a bit of sim racing and wanted the extra real-estate from the 38inch and I consider this to be my end game monitor which I won't change for a very long time.

  • I bought this during the last sale, such a great monitor. Upgraded from a 34 and it is noticeably larger. Paired with a 3080 it runs great.

  • Paid $1700+ ahhhhhhhhh

  • Only if I didn’t buy the GL850 😛

  • +1

If only this had usb-c support

    • +1

Is this just like buying a car because it has cup holders?

  • -3

why not just get an oled, this isn't even 4K

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbXSM4VLoc4

all the console games will be designed for full 4K, why spend this much money and not even get the full experience, mind blowing.

i can see it coming now, a few years later they will release a full 4K monitor and force everybody to upgrade again gg wp.

    • +1

You are overselling 4k. This monitor is near 4k resolution. The resolution is different because of the aspect ratio. Some people like the ultrawide aspect.

This is a PC monitor first. For PC games. Consoles are primarily for TVs.

      • -4

if you are serious about gaming OLED has unparalleled pixel response time, which will blow IPS out the water

        • It's also more expensive, you have to deal with a highly reflective screen which is terrible for PC usage, aggressive ABL and supbar brightness. Essentially if you use your PC as something other than pure gaming, OLED really isn't the best choice at the moment

        • Depends on what you want. I game on my 55 inch LG C9 and it is amazing don't get me wrong, but I am going to buy this monitor for the immersion that ultrawide gives you. You cannot get the level of emersion on a tv that you can on ultrawide. The ultrawide nearly fills your full field of view.

  • oh man i got the aw3418dw, which has been absolutely fantastic.. but.. always wanted something more similar to the 32" 16x9 size i had before.. and this is basically it…
then there's the 48" oled to consider, and potentially the 42" later on.

primary use is monitor for work/ secondary is gaming.. is oled too vivid?, some youtube revieweres have gone back to UW monitors.

    • If it was me, I would not use an OLED for work. I know burn in reduction has come a long way but I would not be comfortable having static images on the screen for that longer periods.

      • yeh agreed, also the matt screen is a bonus vs oled glossy… I DONT NEEED IT! ARRGH.. must stop looking..

        • come on, you know you want to… Buy it! :-)

    • I got the same monitor and pulled the trigger. I tried contacting Dell for a special or coupon of some sort, but they wouldn't allow a swap or either. Going to try and sell it. Watching movies would look better, as well as gaming but now I need to upgrade my graphics card.

  • LG is preparing 42” OLED TV
I’m going to wait for that

    • Believe it when I see it.

  • Already bought the 4k 144hz Aorus fp43u should I get this?

  • Do you need a super powerful Video card for this?

I am still using one that is comparable to a 1060.

    • Yes, very powerful. I wouldnt be using this with anything below a 3080 or 6800 xt personally.

      • +1

A 3060ti is similar to a 3070 and would be good enough. The ultrawide resolution is 3840x1600 and not as demanding as 3840x2160.

        • I respectfully disagree. You MIGHT be able to get 60fps on some games by toning down the settings with a 3060 ti on this monitor. Kinda defeats the purpose of this monitor though, might as well just get a 3440x1440 instead. This is too much monitor for my 3090 even.

          • @drinkin-beer: All depends on what you're trying to achieve. Not everyone needs maxed out graphics or care about raytracing. Not everyone has a 3090 budget hence this monitor is a cheaper choice. Besides, the things their doing with unreal engine 5 with lumen outweighs what raytracing looks like now.

            • -1

@Gitgud: The whole point of this monitor it that it is higher resolution than a standard ultrawide. Anyone playing at this resolution would want the highest graphic settings possible otherwise you might was well just buy a 3440x1440. There are other IPS 3440X1440 in this price bracket that would be more suited to a 3060 ti.

  • Is the screen real estate of this similar to 2 x 24inch 1080p monitors?

  • Can 3080 run 144 hz on this monitor's res?

    • +3

Not on AAA titles but on Stardew Valley sure you'll get 144hz.

    • Yes.

    • maybe mine sweeper :)

  • just needs that usb - c pd and we have a goer

  • Newbie question but can someone tell me how one can acquire discounted eBay gift cards? Thank you :)

    • Check this: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/discounted_egift_cards

Cashrewards and Shopback usually offer a small percentage at the very least.

      • Awesome! Thanks for that :)
Also might sound like a silly question but how do I use the gift card with eBay and will it stack with this coupon code for the Dell sale? Thank you.

        • That combination has worked for me in the past.

  • are they worth for console gaming or over kill? i have XSX and PS5. Also for WFH? currently i have 32" 4k.

    • +1

correct me if i'm wrong, but i dont believe ps5 can do UW res.

    • +1

PS5 and XSX are made for TVs and don't support this aspect ratio. Your 32inch monitor likely has the same aspect ratio as a TV so it looks fine, but on this monitor you will have black bars on each side of the screen when playing a PS5 or XSX.

      • then i believe i am good with my 32"4k S3221QS!

  • i know this is likely a dumb question but is there a way to convert hdmi 2.1 to display port?

  • I am guessing, but I don't think this will work with xbox sx or PS5. I DOnt' see widescreen resolution advertised

    • +1

It'll work but you'll get black bars on the sides.

  • Would this work ok with a standard work laptop? Thinkpad with Intel HD graphics. I've been tempted by the U3821DW for working from home. While I don't need the gaming features this alienware is the same size, resolution and a fair amount cheaper

  • +1

For those unaware with Win 10, use Windows Key + Left or Right arrow to snap windows to your screen.

This monitor easily does 2 word documents side by side and is fantastic for multi tasking.

    • +2

Download windows powertoys (which contains the "Fancy Zones" utility). Allows you to customise the size / quantity of snappable windows positions, which completely transforms the UW experience.

  • I have GALAX GeForce GTX 1660 Super (1-Click OC) 6GB GDDR6 Graphics Card, should I even bother with this monitor? Planning to connect PS5 on it later when I can get one

    • PS5 will have black bars on this monitor. No point

      • oh i better wait for the Xiaomi then. Thanks

        • +1

Mate do some research on aspect ratio. You want a standard 4K monitor not an ultrawide.

        • As the previous commenter said, an ultrawide is not suitable for use with a PS5. You will need a monitor with the same aspect ratio as a TV. Ultrawide monitors have a 21:9 aspect ratio and regular monitors and TVs have a 16:9 ratio. This is why you will have the black bars on the sides.
