I thought Nintendo had learnt their lesson with the Wii U but it seems they didn't.

No one asked for this. What's even more amusing is that the PS Vita (best handheld ever) originally came out with an OLED screen back in 2012 before switching to LCD for its later version.

Honestly, terrible price for just a screen upgrade.

    • Yes but later went the other way, downgrading to an LCD to cut cost. I'm not justifying the underwhelming Nintendo Switch upgrade, it should have originally had an OLED at launch.

‘Learnt their lesson’? The Vita sold just as poorly as the Wii U and the Switch has been the best selling console almost every year since its release. What’s anyone supposed to learn from that?

I didn't make it explicit in my original comment but the lesson learnt reference was due to the fact that Nintendo just releases products through internal feedback while ignoring what's happening in the gaming industry as a whole.

It's just how they do things. Because they're Nintendo.

It's a source of their inspiration - the creation of the Wii and implementing motion controls, 3DS, Switch functionality etc.

And also a source of frustration - shitty online services and netcode, trash 3rd party video game library and consistently high prices for their 1st party titles.

I know the Vita sold poorly. It's obvious when I'd go to EB Games 8 years ago and only see less than 10 games available for the handheld at any given time. Even Sony didn't know what to do with their product. But I just like to highlight it as the PS Vita deserved better treatment and investment overall.

      • Let's all laugh at an industry that never learns anything, tee hee hee.

Wow. Same cpu, same spec just oled… what have you done so far for next gen switch Nitendo??

Love the new Switch version !!! Saves so much money to not need to upgrade! Best deal ever!

    • One of the best bargains ever.

  • It's like they've looked at the state of the world and their previous sales hype and said "hey, I can milk this"

Can't imagine these being overly popular at $539.. It's directly competing with itself at this point.

    • Yep. Target is selling the Switch for $379. I can’t see why anyone would choose the (screen burn) OLED version for $160 more.

      • Not sure if screen burn would be much of an issue, I have none on my launch OLED Vita.. But yeah it is a poor upgrade regardless.

I'm just happy my OG switch stays current.

It never gets played in handheld mode either, so an OLED screen is very 'meh'

  • Deplorable by Nintendo.

They could have at the very least enabled Bluetooth audio support.. I understand bluetooth is still a new fangled thing in 2021 ;-) but hey if the PSP GO could have it in 2009 I don't see why Nintendo still can't work it out 12 years later..

P.S. I know there are 3rd party dongles, but why do you need a dongle for something so simple in 2021 in a > $500 handheld console..

  • held off buying a switch during the recent sales hoping the pro version would be an upgrade. very disappointed now.

Since this developed into a “is it worth it” discussion…

As someone who plays only in handheld and in 80% of the cases it’s 2D/platforming games (like Hades/Dead Cells/Hollow Knight etc.) and in the other 20% of the cases lightweight 3D games, I welcome this upgrade as I ALWAYS wanted a better screen. The current one is sh*t with washed out colours and poor contrast. I’ll trade in my current v2 Switch and get the OLED for extra $240. Is the OLED upgrade worth $240? I guess not for the majority of Switch users, but it is for me. If I didn’t have a Switch to trade in it would be a different story.

BTW I’m primarily a PC gamer, with a long history of PS gaming and Switch is my first ever Nintendo console so leave out the “Nintendo fanboy” in your comments. Bring on the hate! :)

    • Haha! Just realised that it's $299 + my old Switch, not $240. I think I'll skip that trade in and try my luck with selling on eBay! :)

      • Just be aware if you have the original revision of the Switch (with a certain serial number) it is worth more because it can be modded.

    • Yeah, the screen upgrade is worth it to me as well, as it has become by far my main console.
Also, the update to wired internet in the dock is useful for me.
I wish it cost less money, but it's worth it for me personally considering how much time I spend using it. Compared to a game library, the console cost of any of them is kind of irrelevant.

  • Better off getting a current switch for $100+ less with very minor downgrades.

  • That's a no from me boss

  • I'm just kinda low key stoked I don't need to upgrade…

  • That OLED screen is going to look amazing inside my switch dock collecting dust. Can't wait.

I play my switch docked 95% of the time , Switch TV players still get 1 amazing new feature built-in ethernet LAN input. definitely worth the upgrade

    • Just pick up a Wii/Wii U LAN adapter, works a treat.

      • I was being sarcastic

  • Nintendo missed a big opportunity to alter the dock of the Switch.
Put a groove in the front plastic for a big sticker (Nintendo ones for sale obviously)
Top quality, official Nintendo seal and holograph (authenticity).
New big game comes out, new large sticker for the fanboys to lap up.

  • Will be a ebay deal with ebay plus cheaper on day one, these are not deals
