  • is this the next ps5? will there be any shortages at launch?

    • +1

I want to say no since this isn’t a major upgrade. But….scalpers…

      • +32

Is there even a demand for this thing to be scalped though? I've yet to see a positive or excited reaction to this…side-grade-at-best model.

    • +6

It will depend how many they made. But i can't see anyone would be rushing to upgrade their Switch because:

      • there are no OLED model exclusive games
      • no spec bump besides the bigger OLED screen. It is not giving you better FPS, resolutions nor battery life.
      • the new model addresses several issues on the old one. Better kick stand, double the storages, and an ethernet port.

It is basically like the iPhone line up. They could have called the line up Switch "Mini", the Switch, and the Switch "Plus".

      • +4

Weirdly there was more hype for the Switch OG v2.0 even though all it added was a slightly more efficient processor which increased the battery life.

        • +12

It was a pretty massive battery improvement, and they didn't increase the RRP that time

          • +2

@Merlict: Yup my switch (V2) gets around an extra 2 hours compared to my friends (V1).

And I managed to get it just prior to all the shortages and nonsense so it was like $330-350.

      • +3

And they still haven't worked out how to include bluetooth in a $500 handheld game console in 2021..

        • +1

This, if they had given us a battery bump + BT audio at least, but its pretty pathetic when they want to charge more

  • +17

    RRP Bargain.

  • "Three modes in one: Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch (OLED model) systems are designed to fit your life, transforming from home console to portable system in a snap!"

  • Think I'd wait until it hits closer to $450

    • +18

      Which is also quite expensive.

  • Has the pre-order price guarantee

    • Yep, which was why I pre-order since they don't take payment until shipped out (so can cancel anytime).

  • +25

The same 6-year old CPU/GPU in this switch

    • & Nvidia shield…..

    • The same CPU/GPU that all of its games are designed for.

      • +30

The same CPU/GPU that barely runs some of the games "designed for it". I sure do enjoy games that can't even run at 30fps consistently with dynamic resolution dropping to 540p. It's a $500+ console, it's laughable with the hardware it has.

        • +2

Imagine if the Series S came with slow 64gb. To get people to pay even more than the 2017 launch price is even funnier for the same old hardware.

      • +8

I think if they have released the console with a better SoC, I don't think anyone would have said, "they should not have upgraded the internals, it's not the exact same internals that the games were designed for."

    • +2

It's also underclocked pretty significantly, so it's even worse.

  • +16

    Where's the bargain?

    • lol

  • +29

disgraceful upgrade. hope they don't sell at all.

    • +2

About as much chance of this not selling as there is a piano falling on your head.

While it might not by PS5 levels, this thing will sell and sell well.

    • +6

Agreed. Nintendo really is taking the piss with their fans. No Tegra (or other performance) upgrade is majorly disappointing.

Not that I play our Switch so doesn't really bother me either way.

    • Wouldn't an actual upgrade be more disgraceful? As people with the old models wouldn't be able to play the new games.

      • +4

Beautiful screen to play the 22-30fps games.

        • Is that on Nintendo or the game studios that release poor quality games?

          • +1

@Gehirn: that would be on Nintendo and the hardware limitations on the switch. Examples of this are the games that are on multiple platforms (e.g., DoS2, Diablo 3) that cap fps to 30 on the switch, but are playable at >60fps on other platforms.

            • @lafriel: I don't think so. The studios know what they are working with and choose to push games onto it that it can't handle.

            • +1

              @lafriel: Diablo 3 is 60fps on Switch

          • @Gehirn: It is on Nintendo if they publish the games. Hyrule Warriors and Links Awakenings are two games I am aware of with noticable frame rate issues and they were both published by Nintendo. If a few games have issues, you'd say it is the developers, if a lot have issues, then it is the platform.

            • +1

@FabMan: Frankly speaking, I think there is so much you can do with optimisation.

Hades I think is a wonderful example. That game runs smoothly until it starts struggling towards the end game. I doubt they could have done much with the end game boss fights.

Granted, Zelda Breath of the Wild is gorgeous, but even then, I would love to play the game in smooth 60fps (which in my opinion is another example of really good optimised game that does everything it can with what the studio was given to work with). Or Korok Forest without any lags.

              • +1

@iridiumstem: I didn't get a Switch at first as the games were primarily ports from the Wii U or indies on other platforms. Since I don't play portable games anymore I'd just be using it docked and I haven't gotten the Switch now as I am not impressed by the performance. I owned Gameboy, Gameboy Advanced, Gameboy DS, Gameboy 3DS, Wii, and Wii U, so I'd class myself as a fan of Nintendo.

                • +1

@FabMan: I get the feeling that performance wasn't their main goal.

As a console that I could play indie games on the go, and with few other games here and there, it does fit the niche that a gaming PC can't fill. I think that's where it really excels in.

It's just that I think the performance of the console, as is, is to a point where it's hurting Switch's capacity to be even that. I doubt anyone would be able to fit a current gen console performance in a Switch (at the price they are offering), because of battery life, heat dissipation, price range you'd expect a console in, etc etc. That said, I genuinely would have gotten the new Switch if they improved the console so that things lag less.

      • They have done that with New 3DS XL though, already. Handful of exclusives and improvements for the performance.

        • I know they have, and it has a sad amount of support.

          • +1

@Gehirn: I think it gave people an option though, and from what I have heard it made many games play smoother. I opted to get one, because I wanted slightly better control scheme and slightly better performance for Monster Hunter.

I think with the indie developers as well, I think a better SoC would have been good.

Hades for example is wonderful on Switch, but I have found the game to become slightly laggy towards the end levels.

  • The best name for a console since "Xbox Series"

    • Yep. Why not just Nintendo Switch OLED?

    • You forgot the 3DS and New 3DS (& XL version).

  • +15

Another garbage “deal”. It’s high time we stop letting nintendo off the hook milking their fans of cash for rehashed garbage.

    • -1

Totally agree! Got a switch with pre-installed Mario kart for $350 2 years ago, this is a joke! Wasn't planning to upgrade but idiots need to boycott Nintendo, it the only way greedy Nintendo will learn.
When it come to pricing/upgrade/marketing Nintendo is exactly like Apple, which is never good for the consumers

  • +5

I remember back in 2018 when I thought I'll give it one more year then buy the switch cheaper, or buy a switch pro. I guess I'll end up skipping this gen of Nintendo hardware altogether.

    • +1

Switch has some excellent games. The ability to pause at will and take it anywhere is the best part. Highly recommend getting one. My first console since n64

      • +2

You are missing some awesome PS games then.

        • I find games like gta 5 too 'handholdy' and I really only play console games for nostalgia. I have a pc that plays most games that end up on ps. Switch is for Nintendo games

          • @belongsinforums: I'm a PS fan and I understand that feeling. Plenty of Nintendo 1st party games have very refined gameplay, lacking in many AAA games. AAA games typically compensate for the average gameplay with better graphics, story, and unique hooks. For example: Days Gone is a very average game in many ways, however it has a unique hook in Hordes of zombies, I don't think I've experienced anything like that in any other game and makes it fun to play just for that alone.

There are some PlayStation 4 / 5 exclusive games that would suit a Nintendo console and give their first party games a run on pure gameplay:
            LittleBigPlanet 3
            Sackboy: A Big Adventure
            Ratchet and Clank
            Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart
            Astro Bot Rescue Mission
            Astro's Playroom
            Bugsnax
            Knack II
            Dreams
            Journey
            Tearaway Unfolded
            Concrete Genie
            MediEvil
            Gravity Rush 2
            The Last Guardian
            Shadow of the Colossus
            Bloodborne
            Demon's Souls

Plus the story focused games and the cross platform games that run and look better on PS / XBox / PC. Though, not as portable of course.

  • +10

    Interesting bargain.

Too many of these popping up on OzB and really belong in the forums tbh.

  • -8

Not a deal! Cheaper with trade in deal at eb. Upvote if you will boycott this console.

    • you think everyone in the world already owns a switch?

  • +6

RIP BOTW 2 at a decent framerate ….

    • Not even cemu can help us out.

  • The most exciting part of the new model is that you can now buy one and not look like a clown - never understood the red/blue controllers (and for some reason, the grey/black one has never been on sale).

    • +1

I personally recommend Hori Split Pad Pro. It makes the controller feel so much better in the hand (it doesn't have HD Rumble, gyro/motion sensors, NFC, or IR camera, and cannot be used as a wireless controller though).

      • +1

Haha that's not much of a sell! I use the pro, love it.

        • They’re great in handheld mode for people with big hands.

  • Thanks OP. Good to have an option to pre-order without any desposit or payment. Found out on the other thread that my 2017 Switch is worth $400-500 second hand so thought I may as well put in for a pre-order now and then decide what to do at a later date.

    • Really? I didn't know that… tempting to upgrade if the changeover price is minimal!

      • It has to have a certain serial number - look online and it will tell you which ones are more valuable.

        • Is this due to mod-ability?

As tempting as the pricing goes, I'll prob hold off selling and see if we see another revision.

But, probably hold onto the one I got and mod it once I see a better upgrade option.

  • The white colouraway is so pretty…

  • Any cheap Nintendo switch og consoles for sale?

  • +1

Are people actually okay with preordering this without seeing it in person?

    • I mean, of course? See also the fifty billion iphones that folk order each year.

  • i want on… i want one…. i want one… not,

i haven't done anything else with the current switch then play mario kart every night with the kids or lets go pikachu,

  • +2

Well…. Not saying this is a deal but at least this deal is better (or less worse) than the other [pre-order] OLED Switch posts, as it is from Amazon where you don't pay a deposit up front. They usually charge only when they ship. And it's easy to return/cancel if you change your mind.

  • +1

Like I said, Nintendo milking their Nintendo fanboys…mooooo…

  • +4
    • 95% of the time dock & play on my 55" TV with external speakers > OLED screen, enhanced sound
    • I have bigger storage card, plenty of space still > 64GB
    • I have the case that has better stand >Upgraded stand
    • I use wireless > ethernet port

    • for $539 What did I miss? maybe I should get a PS4 instead

    • +3

Exactly same situation, plus unpatched switch.

  • Ozpreoder

  • I actually find it sad i barely even use my switch now and it just kinda sits there :(

    • -1

I'm the opposite, my PS4Pro sits unused and the Switch is used nearly every day. I never got into Nintendo as a kid, but love the Switch.

  • Thanks OP, grabbed 20.
Seriously though, hope this sells as badly as the special Mario edition did

  • +4

Ops avatar says it all…. Where is the bargain????

  • +1

At least we won't be scalped with this one

  • +3

    Agree no deal here

  • -1

Still cheaper than some wireless headphones that get madly pos voted

    • +5

That seems like a good comparison, it's also cheaper than the Tesla deals that get madly upvoted.

    • Those wireless headphones support BT in 2021, unlike nintendo ;-)

  • +1

Nintendo fan boys watcha gonna do, watcha gonna do when Nintendo puts out some more bull$hi+ to sucker you?

After this is released whats next?
an OLED Switch red & blue with an actual Mario logo this time?

  • -6

Wow! So much jelly hate in here for the new switch update. I know of people who purchased multiple switches in various colour ways, just because they liked them. I’m gonna bet this console will sell out and be wildly popular. Even the current model released in 2019 is still cracking it and what kind of upgrade was that compared to the 2017 model?

We can thank companies for that since they’ve groomed our insatiable appetites for tech device updates as quickly as we possibly can.

    • +1

I know of people who purchased multiple switches in various colour

These are the same type of people who buy $2000 PCs just to rant on Twitter. Doesn't show anything except their own lack of money sense.

  • +1

I imagine at this point (90+ million units sold) Nintendo just want to keep the ball rolling, a truly more powerful model would splinter sales, and with the chip shortage they most likely wouldn't be able to meet demand.

This model makes more sense for new buyers and casuals, who I imagine make up most of the current buying market.

    • Probably want to beat the Wii in sales before releasing a superior Switch. That’s why I’m pretty sure they’ll make a better Switch for late 2022 or 2023. Management is navigating around the worst of the upcoming chip shortages.

    • Exactly. If buying a second Switch for multiplayer, or buying your first Switch, this is a good update, bigger and better screen is really all I want out of this generation.
I'd personally prefer them not have a 'Switch Pro' and just bring out an entirely new model in another year or two that is a really big upgrade, like the jump from PS3 to PS4 or 360 to XB1.

  • I dunno, with Amazon’s price match and the launch supply shortages you come to expect with gaming these days, people should really evolve their interpretations of what a deal is here on Ozbargain. Some people just like to drop negative votes, sucks for you that you’re in the minority 🤷‍♂️

  • +2

If this new Switch (OLED) can get under $400, it is a bargain but not now is just pre-order RRP.

    • +1

Even when it flops and goes fast to below $400 its not a bargain .
I was `%ing looking forward to some pro advance features ( and quick finger Ps5 battles to get it ) and all they produced was crap .
Don't they want to compete with the other 2 ?
