7 days free VPN service @ Oeck - NextGen VPN

101

Hi OzBargain,

We spent the last two years building a VPN with features we wanted to exist. We did this for Victoria and now it is NSW's turn. Due to the lockdown we are giving everyone 7 days free access to our service. We work differently to other VPNs on the market, so please read our manual and test out the service during lockdown. Simply sign up and you will have 7 days access.

Some of our unique features include;

Streaming Automation - Connect to the VPN region nearest to your location and still access content from overseas streaming services. We take away the need for you to jump around VPN regions. You can also set regions for specific streaming services. For example you can set your Netflix region independently - similar to how a smartDNS service works. This means no more searching for the "right" server to connect to. Just connect to the VPN and we take care of the rest.

Device Profiles - You can have up to 100. Each profile allows you to have unique settings for when you log in. For example, you can have one for your computer, another for your iPad, another for your partner, another for your child, etc.

Advanced Port Forwarding - You no longer need to keep track of IP addresses or configure your software to work with the VPN ports you are given. Just tell us which port to forward to and which device profile and it's done.

For example, if you set up a web server on your computer and enable port forwarding, regardless of which VPN server you ever connect to ( any server, any region ), to access your web server you would go to username-mydevice.oeck.me:portNumber - It stays the same :)

Also great for torrenting.

Ad, Malware, Social Network and Adult blocker - You can pick and choose which ( if any ) of the blockers you want enabled for each device profile. This allows you to turn on Adult blocking for children's devices but keep yours open. It is also very extensive and does a good job of blocking most ad, tracker and malware domains.

Custom filter - You can take the blockers even further by adding your own domain block-list on a per-device level. This gives you complete control over each and every device. This is very powerful and is easily built on.

Custom DNS - You can set your DNS on a per-device level. You can choose for the VPN to give you complete control to your DNS, or set your DNS and still allow the VPN to take control over certain domains in order for the channels and blocking to still work. This means you can even use your own DNS if you wanted to.

Automated server selection - When a user connects to a region they will always connect to a server with the most resources available. This completely removes the need to server-surf on the users end. They just connect to a region and they will be sure to jump on the server within that region that has the most resources available at that point in time.

All of our VPN servers run without ANY hard drives at all. We have gone to great lengths to make sure our users get the best service and the most secure one. As a VPN service - forgetting the bells and whistles - it is fast and secure with fantastic privacy.

Question: Is your VPN anonymous or do you log user traffic and data to produce for the govt if requested?

I realise majority of VPNs do log this, just wanted to see where your service stands. Thanks.

    • I think mullvad is good for anonymity because you can pay with crypto even cash and no signing up process. Also open source and independently audited. Otherwise you are just placing your trust on the provider that they don't keep logs without any proof

        Hi Throwaway843517629,

We also allow crypto and cash payments to our service. The independent audit is a little bit irrelevant as it just means that after an audit, should a company wish to do harm to their users, they are free to do so. It also is something that is very costly and the trust users may put in the audit prevent small companies ( such as Oeck ) from entering the market.

Having said that, Mullvad is a good VPN which actually respects your privacy - but so do we.

        Regards,
        Peter @ Oeck.

      Hi hanger7,

We absolutely do not log. We have gone to great lengths to ensure our system can not be compromised and is not logging user activity. You can read about exactly what we don't log and what we monitor in our privacy policy - https://www.oeck.com/privacy-policy/

If a government agency were to contact us, there is literally nothing we can hand over aside from the server. However, not only do the servers not log anything, but they run off RAM only. It will just mean we are handing over a useless machine. We also have guards in place to ensure a server can not be connected to the network or tampered with.

      Regards,
      Peter @ Oeck.

Thanks Peter, very impressed! Will be checking you out now.

Of course I don't do anything "suss" but the prime reason to have a VPN is privacy and getting tired of all the 'false' advertising by many VPNs…

          You're welcome!

Yeah, tell me about it. The whole industry is pretty crappy really. We are having a hard time getting reviewed because we don't have an affiliate programme running. Any feedback helps :)

Let me know how you find out service :)

          Regards,
          Peter @ Oeck.

  • I have some questions. Has there been any security audits done? Which vpn protocols is used (wireguard)? Is it p2p friendly for torrenting?

    • +2

      Hi Throwaway843517692,

We have not had security audits done as far as putting a badge on our website to have a security company confirm we are not logging, etc. This was an extremely costly thing to do and ultimately does not mean a VPN company won't do the wrong thing if they wished to do so. We have a Whirlpool thread ( https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/9p8qxvl9 ) where you can read about us and what we have been doing over the last 12 months.

We are not supporting Wireguard yet as we don't fully trust the protocol at this point in time. We are waiting to see what happens with it and we will ultimately end up supporting it - but there is no ETA on this. At the moment we only support OpenVPN.

      Regards,
      Peter @ Oeck.

Many VPN providers claim they don't log anything, when they get raided users find out that wasn't the case. DoubleVPN is the most high profile recent example.

Just because a server doesn't have local disk doesn't mean something else can't be installed on it. Just because a server doesn't have local disk doesn't mean it isn't logging.

It is really hard to trust the claims of VPN providers.

Correct, I just wanted to get the official statement from this service…

VPNs are great for protecting you on Public Networks (Free WIFI etc) from other users but it's becoming clearer that VPNs are not good at keeping your activity private - only because of the admin side of things… Unfortunately they are marketed as secure…

Edit: haha and someone negged my earlier honest question. Good job, stick your head back in the sand…

        Hi hanger7,

I upvoted your post as it is a very good question you asked and something consumers should be asking.

It is also important to remember that a VPN is a privacy service and not an anonymity service. There is only so much a VPN can do when it comes to your privacy online and a VPN is not a single solution to everything.

        Regards,
        Peter @ Oeck.

      Hi skwashd,

This statement is absolutely true. A VPN can ultimately do whatever it likes regardless of things like running RAM only, being audited, etc. The fact that there are absolute crap VPN companies out there who betray the trust of their users makes it difficult for a consumer to pick the right company. Oeck being a new service has a big uphill battle on its hands as far as gaining trust goes.

Having said that, we are transparent. We have a FAQ section on our website which explains how the system works. Aside from our servers only being RAM, we also own the routers in the datacentre. On top of that, we also have put measures in place to ensure no servers can be tampered with. We have been online for 12 months now, and thus far we have had happy customers. You can see our Whirlpool thread at https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/9p8qxvl9

To give you an idea of how our network works, please take a look at the following diagram - https://imgur.com/jOpjIcO

EDIT: Just as a note, those "top VPN services" sites, for the most part, also have their role to play in betraying consumer trust.

      Regards,
      Peter @ Oeck.

  • I have noticed that VPN providers can sometimes Drastically improve gaming latency.

I would love to test gaming performance to various regions. Thanks for posting.

    • Hi kev88au,

      Hey, you're welcome!

As a side note, our upstream provider for Seattle, Melbourne, Sydney and London peers with major gaming networks. Our gaming customers have reported either better or just as good ping times to the servers with the VPN on. Please feel free to give it a shot and see how it goes. Let us know your results!

      Regards,
      Peter @ Oeck.

      • I’m in Sydney, for some reason Telstra routes my traffic to Digital Pacific’s Sydney server via Melbourne.

Oeck traffic drastically helped this halving my latency from 22 down to about 10. Fortnite was also very playable via Oeck no North American servers.

However, I’ve just received an email saying my 3 day trial is almost over. I thought it was 7 days?

        • Hi kev88au,

Thanks for letting me know the results :)

Ignore the email, it is an automated step made for normal conditions. You will get 7 days free.

          Regards,
          Peter @ Oeck.

  • Tried this to access some Brazilian websites that are geolocked, didn't help at all, especially since it doesn't give me the option to choose my IP location.

    • Hi Juggernauto,

Did you read our FAQ and features? Our VPN does not work the way a traditional VPN works. If you request services you want automatically unblocked, we can help.

      Regards,
      Peter @ Oeck.

  • Can I access South Korea using Oeck?? Anyone know the list of supported regions?

    • Hi Enjoyer,

Our VPN works differently to what you're probably use to, in that we automate things. If you give me a list of services you would like to access in SK we should be able to help :)

      Regards,
      Peter @ Oeck.

      • mainly Netflix in SK. Thanks.

        • No worries! We have SK Netflix ready to go. Simply set your device profile to SK Netflix and connect to any VPN region :)

          Regards,
          Peter @ Oeck.
