Simond 12cm Rock Climbing Quickdraw - $12 (C&C Only) @ Decathlon

160

Excellent price for quickdraws. These are UIAA rated so no different to other draws on the market. Solid gates as well so fine to use with carrot bolts.

  • The fastest draw in the west

    • but not without El Kabong

  • Great price for quickdraws. shame it's pickup only.

Probably not the sort of equipment you want to be cheap with 😬

If they have a Aus approved rating it doesn't matter. These would be good for beginners

This is reputable gear, with it being sold in europe as well. There are plenty of other brands other than petzl/black diamond.

  • Junk - up there with Aldi lockers. Not a bargain for me, as I value my life more.

Also, the dogbone is too short and stiff for me. I prefer something a bit longer and dynamic.

    • its fine, uaii rated. Sold throughout europe. You've just had to much black diamond/petzl koolaid.

As I said, I value my life more.

Just because they are UAII rated doesn't mean they're safer or good to use.

Agree, there are plenty of brands out there that have better reputations and fewer recalls than Simond. A quick google of 'Simond recalls' will inspire confidence in their climbing gear - just before you take a big whip/fall. It is possible they are made in the same factory as other brands, however, they are less transparent on their English website about their history of recalls than the other brands (you have to go to their parent French/German website). I don't know how much most people value this.

More experienced climbers buy longer draws because they are more versatile: safer for short people to clip, less drag, and safer for wandering/overhung routes. As a beginner, you're better off buying longer draws once than re-buying and chucking out short junk later.

        • Actually you shouldn't be reaching up high to clip anyway (unless its the first bolt). A straight route is fine for short draws. Good choice for beginners especially for someone who isn't sure they'll stick with the sport. Buy the expensive sports draws later, turn these into alpine draws or just keep to add on to supplement your rack.

Simond gear is made in france as well. I actually think its better made than some of the BD carabiners on the market. I've had a BD hoodwire biner fail on me mid route. (Had some wires racked on it - gate became stuck open and nuts jettisoned).

          • @mrjames: Your poor short seconder - particularly if you're beginners - they'll never get up the wall!

These are like $1 on ebay…

    • +1

Not ones rated for climbing that you'd be willing to hang off of. Massive difference between these and the ones sold as keyrings.

Not ones rated for climbing that you'd be willing to hang off of.

Might be out of the same factory though…

        • You can bend the cheapies with your bare hands mate, they also usually have “not rated for climbing” written in big letters down the side.

            Not all of them.

  • Been a long time since I did any sport climbing but I prefer the style with a "banana" gate (got some DMM ones that I mainly use) or alternatively a wire gate, much smoother to get into the bolt especially when you're doing a hard climb!

But this is a great price for highly rated quick draws.

    • +1

you'll pay $30+ for local stock of the banana style gate. Also wiregates can't really be used on carrots.

      • Yeah I remember the DMMs werent cheap and they only came in a 5 pack rather than a 6 pack (stingy brits…)

  • +1

Product can only be returned if proved faulty.
If you're still alive of course.

  • I picked up some cheapies of a brand called Clog years ago - terrible draws but they were cheap. Used them to rack my trad gear and threw the dogbone away. Now I've got a decent income, I'm all about the Petzl Spirits (admittedly 4x the price though)!

    • have a look at epictv and oliunid. Half the price as local sellers, ships from europe in a week.
