32GB easily chewed up in gaming.

      • Haven't seen that myself, can you give an example game?

        • +3

          Space Engineers, Star Citizen.

        • +1

Happened to me with Watchdogs 2

          • +1

@iDrownFish: Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 goes over 16GB but only just. That game is terribly optimised though.

Edit: Whoops wasn't meant to tag you.

            • +1

@Yuri Lowell: Yeah and ubisoft optimisation is also awful, I could kinda run it fine if i closed everything else running in background but was gettn annoying and another 16gb was on sale lol

              • +1

@iDrownFish: That's what I ended up doing when playing with 16GB in MFS2020. Honestly the 32GB does come in handy nowadays as you can leave Chrome open while gaming lol.

        • +11

          Chrome.exe

      • +6

I recently upgraded to 32gb… If you take a game, something easy like Warzone, it chows up 10gb of ram easily.. Then I have windows resources, I have several applications running, I have plex on my machine, I have some development tools, GitHub etc. Then Chrome which takes up to 100000GB of ram easily hahaha.. So for daily usage, my 16gb was fine but then when I play games I had to exit out of several things just to get some resources available and not run to 100% ram usage.

        • +1

yeah exactly, so dumb when people only take into account how much ram the game is using
no one wants to close everything in the background when they wna play for a bit

    • +2

ppl just wanna to saturated all 4 of their ram slots. thats the "need".

      • +1

You can easily use over 16GB of ram between a game and background tasks, so that is false.

My modded Skyrim uses well over 16GB by itself, many modern games also approach over 10GB, which, when you factor in Windows and other background tasks like Chrome, 16GB is again, not enough to use your PC while gaming and keeping frequently used programs open in the background.

    • +3

If you're a heavy PC user then 32GB will help but if you're just an average user and play the average game then 16GB is fine tbh.

I have 32gigs but I have 1-2 virtual machines running on Hyper-V, a couple of Docker containers, qBitTorrent (with a chunky disk cache) running at any given time. I had to stop these sometimes when I wanted to game since I kept running out of RAM when I just had 16gb.

My view is that if the RAM is cheap and is reasonably fast (considering both the frequency and cas latency) then just buy 32gb and live your best life. Also Windows automatically caches system files (or whatever it deems useful) to utilize your unused ram but I don't really know how much that helps.

    • I have gns3 windows ubuntu and debian VMs so I need every bit of my 64GBytes
Chrome alone seems to suck up 8GB lately

  • Cdie or bdie?

    • +4

if you think 3600 18-22-22-42 is b die you are crazy

  • +14

    It's a shame klarna went broke ;)

  • +6

Not dealing with PCCG until the early-end to the klarna offer stops being frustrating. Ie: never.

    • What do you mean by this?

      • +10

They falsely advertised a promotion by pulling it early without informing consumers

  • A stupid question, it says it is tailor-made for AMD, will it work with Z490 mobos?

    • +1

I believe "tailor made for AMD" is marketing/sales language used to make you feel good about your purchase. I'd be extremely surprised if this RAM doesn't work just as well on Intel systems as it does with AMD.

I remember one of the most well known problems with early versions of the Ryzen platform was it's RAM compatability / stability at higher speeds. So companies started advertising "for AMD" or "for Ryzen" when they thought their RAM was especially stable…

    • +3

      Not a stupid question.

It will work with pretty much any moptherboard that takes DDR4, but it may not run at it's listed speed with the XMP setting.
The only way to be sure if it will work is to look up the specific motherboard you've got/are looking at. Under the support section on the manufacturers page you'll find a section for Memory QVL. That lists every single make and model of memory that the manufacturer has guaranteed will run at the rated speed on their board.

    • +1

Thank you guys. I have checked the QVL list and this one is indeed compatible with both of my Z490 mobos. Bought one pair. $15 delivery is a bit too much for V1 area. Sadly, they don't offer pickup options now :(

This or the 2x Patriot Viper Steel (2x16) for $260 on Amazon?

    • depends on speed and timings patriot viper steel 4000-4400mhz is samsung b die so that should be 10x better than this, if its below 4000mhz just get this. i got 2x8 4400mhz viper steel for $135 and its running at 3933c14 at 1.59v

      • 4000-4400mhz is samsung b die so that should be 10x better than this

Patriot Viper Steel currently tops out at 3600 for 2 x 16gb kit on Amazon, so none of what you said applies. This is the kit referred to for $260 on Amazon:

        Capacity: 32GB(2x16GB) Voltage: 1.35V; tested frequency: PC4-28800 (3600MHz), tested timings: 18-22-22-42

        • damn, never checked out 2x16gb kit so didnt expect patriot to only have a 3600 kit, interesting.

          • @abjsdhasehasee: yeah can't figure out which is better

            • @Slut: They're both a gamble in terms of what ICs you get, so I'd just get whichever is cheaper.

            • @Slut: if your not planning on trying to oc, just get the cheapest and use xmp, if you are its a gamble still.

      • +1

        1.59v…wow

        • its not that crazy? it wont hurt the ram lol

    • +1

Patriot is a gamble … they sell kits that sometimes can't run at advertised speeds on XMP.
      My case was 64GB (2x32gb) 3600 kit on a 5950x + MSI Mag Tomahawk X570.

      • 2x32gb

Expensive gamble, wow. Did it work out in the end?

        • It was cheaper at the time ($370ish).

Couldn't post even close to 3600. Got a refund via Amazon. Went Crucial Ballistix instead for about $100 more.

Would've chosen this deal if it was available at the time.

          • @tkdbboy: or you coulda pumped 0.05 more volts and saved $100.

            • +1

@abjsdhasehasee: Or their RAM could just work at their advertised spec.

Tried pumping the voltage. They sent over like 6 different speed / timing / voltages to test and at best, it would boot but apps were unstable or BSOD

          • @tkdbboy: I'm looking for a 64GB kit myself to use on my X570 MB (I'm finding 32GB isn't enough for my usage). Could you give me a link to the Crucial Ballistix kit you bought? Did you get a 3600Mhz kit or 3200Mhz kit? I am also assuming the price has gone up on the Crucial kit since you bought it?

            • @Ice009: Here's the one I got (BL2K32G36C16U4B): https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B083TSLC72

              Its 3600Mhz.

Was $545 when I purchased it.

              • @tkdbboy: Hi Tkdbboy, thanks a lot. I think I will try and get that kit. I assume it's also a good thing for it to be 2 x 32GB rather than 4 x 16GB so that you can upgrade later on with another two sticks if more RAM is ever needed.

Does occupying all 4 RAM slots make any difference on the Ryzen 5xxx series CPUs. I thought I remember reading at launch they perform better with 4 sticks (can't remember if it was just marginal performance increase) compared to 2, but yeah, I'm still using a 3900X, so I guess that wouldn't apply to me.

                • @Ice009: Yeah that's the reason I went with 2 sticks. Unlikely I would ever need to go higher than 64gb but the option is there.

2 v 4 sticks 64gb performance difference is negligible in real life application. Unless you want to squeeze a few extra drops out for a benchmark score, then do what is more practical or cost effective depending on your budget.

                  • +1

@tkdbboy: Ahh right, yeah, I will definitely go with the 2 sticks then if the real world performance difference is negligible (I do plan to try and get a 5900X when I can get one for a decent price, but for now, happy with the 3900X). It will at least leave an upgrade path, but, like you, not sure if I'll ever need 128GB.

                    • @Ice009: Here's some benchmarks for single rank vs dual rank, 2 slots vs 4 slots

Skip down to the third set of graphs - Single rank vs dual rank

On average, dual-rank memory offered up to 7% more performance than single-rank memory in our application tests. In gaming, however, it made almost zero difference.

The 2x16GB setup presented 20.4% and 6.7% performance gains over the 2x8GB setup in Photoshop and Premiere, respectively. We saw similar improvement in performance in y-cruncher and 7-Zip's compression benchmark where the 2x16GB memory kit outperformed the 2x8GB memory kit by 15.6% and 25.2%, respectively.

Four memory ranks are definitely the way to go for Ryzen 5000. On an AM4 motherboard with four DDR4 memory slots, you can opt for a memory kit that's comprised of two dual-rank or four single-rank memory modules. The cumulative results showed a negligible difference between the two setups.

Note: sometimes you don't have the luxury of four slots - e.g. Mini-ITX. I have 2 x 16GB Dual Rank which fulfils the last point

                      • @pennypacker: Thanks. This is kind of what I was asking as I thought I read on launch that the 5xxx series CPUs perform much better with 4 sticks installed. Didn't know about the 4 ranks, though.

How do you find out if your memory kit has dual or single ranks?

Would a 64GB kit (2x32GB) of that Crucial Ballistix https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B083TSLC72 that I am looking at be single or dual rank?

This is a great price. It is also listed on their ebay page so if you have ebay plus you can get a further 5% off - the code should appear on the product page. Comes to ~$185 delivered.

    • +2

You got me excited for a second there. Unfortunately pccg do not use eBay plus so no discount.

      • I had a 5% off coupon popup at checkout for Plus Members. It worked for me on the item.

        • Was it a generic code or a targeted code?

          • @Slut: Ah I was just editing my comment but can't do so because of the reply haha.

Note: It seems its a targeted code which is unique to each member, the coupon redemption code starting with PLUS5M———

Others may have the $5 ebay plus membership coupon that may work as well.

            • +1

@exc3113nce: no ebay PLUS for PCG on anything….weird stuff here these days…

        • Worked for me too.

          • @theBestBastion: so you got ebay plus free postage?

            • @petry: Nope, there is no free postage. Only 5% off, $16 postage.

              • -1

@theBestBastion: No one said free shipping. With shipping it will be 185 delivered.

Edit: it should be replying someone else lol

                • +1

                  @Dienk: no 5% seen either

                  • @petry: That is a shame =(

                    • @Dienk: and a fact for '88dozz 6 hours 33 min ago' who wrote

'You got me excited for a second there. Unfortunately pccg do not use eBay plus so no discount.'

                      • @petry: I thought he meant free shipping with eBay plus. I misunderstood then.

  • Is this ram considered an upgrade from a Cl16 3200 budget ram (for 5900x)?

    • I would also like to know the same thing for my 5800x with 3200mhz CL16.

    • +3

Yeah, should be a decent upgrade since the Infinity Fabric runs at the same speed as the RAM.

You could likely overclock your current RAM to 3600 tho.

      • Not if its C-die, that thing will go kicking and screaming if you try to overclock it

        • Can confirm my 3200mhz kit is c-die and it shits itself at anything but xmp lol

    • +1

No, timing is very loose on this kit

      • The overall latency of a 3200 CL16 kit is the same as a 3600 CL18 kit though. It won't be an upgrade, but he won't notice a loss in performance either.

        • doubt that, 3200 16-18-18-36 is better than 3600 18-22-22-42

          • +1

@ln28909: It's the same overall latency. If you do the maths, 3600/18 is exactly the same as 3200/16. Also the 3600 kit would be better suited to running in a 1:1 ratio with the FCLK at 1800.

  • I got this previously https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/618546.
Should be ok for me to get this and throw it in there to replace the current single stick?
Or if anyone has suggestions to match the single stick, as it seems to be fairly hard to find a matching one.

    • CPU-Z is a simple, free program that would help you to identify the exact RAM module currently installed.

I don't have experience trying to run XMP profiles on OEM builds… There's no reason why this RAM wouldn't work in that machine… but I don't know if you'd be able to get it running at the advertised speeds? Depends on your access to the BOIS, and the memory controller of the motherboard (I think)… [I'm no expert]

      • I did run a report previously for the part number:

        M378A2G43AB3-CWE

But it seems harder to find than most.
And having a second look, the timings at 1600MHz are worse than these.

  • Waiting for the xtreem 32gb to go on sale TT

  • +4

Unfortunately I cannot purchase from PCCASEGEAR anymore due to the Klarna debacle

    • I’m out of the loop, what debacle? Did they can all of the orders?

      • +1

        they shipped my 5600x out.

        • +1

what day/time did you order? Still waiting for mien.

      • +2

They pulled a promotion that was meant to last two weeks after two days without really attempting to inform consumers. Many people bought products thinking they were receiving a discount well in time only to now not be receiving it

        • Damn wtf that’s pretty garbage

        • +1

Wait so, now you won't get the 4th payment covered, even if you ordered before 5pm on Friday???

          • +1

@bigtom_999: If you bought during the promotion you will still get the 4th payment covered. They just ended the promotion early without informing anyone

  • +5

Avoiding PCCG after the Klarna business. Trust at your own risk

    • +1

      What happened?

      • +1

They pulled a promotion that was meant to last two weeks after two days without really attempting to inform consumers. Many people bought products thinking they were receiving a discount well in time only to now not be receiving it. Intentional or not, it is textbook bait advertising. Wouldn't be surprised if some people still fall for it as it still hasn't been communicated publicly by either company that the promotion has ended. The only way we found out was because OzBargain people had contacts there or contacted support

        • +2

I saw the changed ending date was clearly written on the website… After all, it's their right to do so.

        • Probably would avoid them if possible, customer service wasn't like it was 5 years ago. Pretty sure return is store credit from memory or you get a decent support rep or you have lodge small claims to get refunded.

          rant

They take legit a week to process in stock item compare to other store where pick/dispatch within 24 hours. Now they blame pandemic for delay but is already 1.5 years into pandemic and still hasn't sort their shit. They used to offer label for RMA or offer drop off but now they won't even offer a RMA label for item broken within warranty, have to lodge a a small claims for them to offer shipping label and return. No point trying to claim any RMA out of warranty, they just push you to manufacturer.

    • So you know for certain that it was PCCG and not Klarna that cancelled the promotion?

  • +1

Wonder if these can be tightened to cl16

    • +1

Really depends on what ICs you get.

If you get C-die, no chance at tightening primary timings at all.

You could also get 8Gb Micron Rev E or 16Gb Rev B both of which can tighten and overclock relatively well.

Hynix CJR, DJR or even their 16Gb ICs are possible but they should be able to do 3600 CL16.

However, most of the performance gains comes from tightening subtimings not primary timings.

  • +2

Looks like single rank DIMMS. Good for lots of chrome tabs… bad for gaming, on Ryzen at least.

    • -1

Buy 2 sets of these (4x16GB) to get same performance as double rank :-D

  • Wonder if this works with MSI Z390 Plus Motherboard. Currently have Kingston HyperX Fury 8GB (2x4GB) 2400MHz CL15 DDR4.
    Cheers

    • +1

      For sure.

  • Whats the density on these sticks?
