Can any Mandarin expert recommend which one is the easiest and better out of those 2 courses?

    • I would like to know too

    • +1

Probably try one session for each. I found it out it’s easier that way when choosing a Python course. Even a teacher’s voice could make a difference to your decision.

    • Top one maybe cos it’s taught by a native speaker

    • Can’t actually. We learnt that since we are kids in a totally different way. We can first speak it then write the characters down. Like the way anyone learn their mother language.

      • -1

this guys not wong…. actually he is :)

        • -1

You learnt to write before you could speak?

    • +1

Pick the one who's instructor has a stronger accent. :-D

    • From the aspect of accent, "Complete Chinese Course: Learn Mandarin for Beginners" is better than another one.

    • +4

The 'Chinese for Beginners' is a russian instructor, and is much shorter (about an 68mins), with short 10min phrases/sections. Her pronunciation is fine. It's a good primer, to get started, and it's always nice to show that western palette can master the only four tones in mandarin effectively.

The 'Complete' sounds like a native Chinese person so there might be a slight bias towards it being more correct (remember though china is massive and accents vary hugely so don't be put you off on being the 'more correct'). It's a more comprehensive course (7hrs), I had a quick look at the first section covering pinyin, and the content is good there.

    • The top course is from a native speaker from the North of China. You'll soon find out that there are a few differences between mandarin chinese spoken in the south and in the north, although Beijing Mandarin Chinese is the 'most correct' one, which is a northern dialect.

Who is claiming most of the South China Sea illegally and building military bases ?

        • +4

How many military bases has your master warmonger America deployed to the world?

          • +6

@newonelei: No idea…but those Chinese "island bases" are (a) (some) built up ie predominantly artificial (b) being used to claim "these are now Chinese territorial waters, ALL nations must agree"……………..note using "warmonger America" says to me that you have been brainwashed!

          • @newonelei: So China and US are both warmongers?

        • Illegally? Who gave your rights to claim it's illegal? How dare west represent the world? There are more than 200 countries in the world, how many countries on earth support your illegal conclusion?

          • @newonelei: Hmm..most of them.

            • +2

@Agent Q: More than 90 countries votes for China, more than 40 countries votes for west. Surely American controlled medium in Australia did not report it. They don't dare to report.

              • @newonelei: Out of the 90, how many come from Africa? I heard African students in China are given a lot of money and even 2 girl friends each year. Is it true?

          • +2

@newonelei: (adding more detail) Most that haven't been sucked into belt and road debt………….and no., I don't particularly like US foreign policy but Chinese is worse IMO, even with the horrific opium imposition as a reason to dislike the west

          • +1

@newonelei: The 2016 ruling by an international tribunal in the Hague. Look it up.

            • +1

@diu97u: No dog in this fight but a tribunal is not international law. There's a lot of wannabe legal experts on these forums, best to actually read the underlying "legislation"/"statute"/"code" or whatever you are applying and more importantly to understand what jurisdictional basis one has.

We may as well be quoting ThinkTanks/media who have agendas sponsored, or owned, by elites/corporations who happen to be biggest donors to political parties as fact… oh wait…

          • +6

@newonelei: Since you seem to know bugger all about the issue, that would be the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, an agreement that China signed under no duress.

That's why China lost to the Philippines in 2016. Because their actions are illegal.

          • +8

@newonelei: mate Vietnam, Philippines, Taiwan and all the countries who share the South China are getting pissed at China. So its not a Western Claim its an everybody claim! So stop simping for Chinese media!

Jesus christ, anytime anything China related is in plain sight, it attracts the most vitriolic racists to the comments. This is a freebie lol, if you don't like it don't use it, no wonder anti-asian sentiments are so pervasive in this country.

    • +13

Criticism of the CCP is not racism in any shape or form.

People like you who shill for them despite their atrocities is incredibly worrying.

@studentl0an: In a way, CCP doesn't war. They only kill people within their own country

          • +1

@studentl0an: Canadian genocide did not happen. Australian genocide did not happen to native ppl.

            • +9

@newonelei: And Canadians and Aussies do admit to the dark history and they have learned from it. Will CCP do the same?

              • +4

@Terencey: 36 million died of starvation in the great leap forward and CCP blamed it on "natural disaster" which didn't happen. Many millions more in Cultural Revolution, no apologies. Tiananmen Massacre? didn't happen.

        • +1

It's not a competition, you know? You could hate them both if necessary.

        • +1

America at least isn't a Dystopia! China is! Go live with the Commies if you don't like it here!

          • @RetroMetro: 'Commies', really? What are you, a 1950's American Dad?

            • +1

@FabMan: No im not you get the point

              • -1

@RetroMetro: Yeah, your point was 'Go back to where you came from', a good old racist insult.

                • @FabMan: Being a immigrant myself, nothing wrong with asking a bit of loyalty towards a country you choose over the one you were born in. I mean if you think you made a mistake why not go back and fix it. I hate it when people (some from my own community) come to this beautiful country to call it home and still only have bad things to say about it.

                  • @dealhunter52: I'm a immigrant too, I love it here and speak highly of it. People here are allowed to criticise governments and cultures, even immigrants and that is a wonderful part of a free democracy we have here. Telling people to sod off to another country when they talk about the problems a country has is more a reflection on the person saying it than the person they are saying it too.

Also I don't know if you noticed, but they criticised America and RetroMetro defended the US, that isn't this beautiful country. Considering the US history of invading other nations, such as Iraq, who haven't done anything to the US, I can understand that feeling from people. RetroMetro called China a dystopia, are we saying that people can criticise one country but not another?

                    • @FabMan: My comment was specifically targeted towards newonelei. He is not pointing the current problems this country has but just going in history books to argue his point. Just because some country did genocides or crimes against humanity 20, 50 or 100 years ago doesn't gives free hand to a particular country to go about doing even worse in 21st century. Haven't we learnt anything from history?

As far as US is concerned, they do have a dark history and have done awful things but at least their govt and media acknowledges it and trying to get better and constantly improving. Same with Australia, we are trying to make up for our past mistakes and offer range of programs to indigenous and Torres Straight islanders. But I can't hold my white aussie mates responsible for wrong doings their grandfathers or great grandfathers did. Each generation is accountable for their own actions. This stigmatising of current generation for sins of forefathers has to stop at some point. Moreover, why should I be apologetic as a immigrant for events took place before I was even born or came to this country?

                      • @dealhunter52: There are a lot of people that dismiss or rationalise their countries actions because it happened in the past despite there are people still alive who are directly affected by those actions or they grew up with parents that suffered. The stolen generation are still alive who do not know who their family is or where they are from, there are some people who had their children taken away from them and are still alive. Even those parents that died of natural causes, would have spoken to other people in their community saying "Those people steal children if you do not conform", so they have a high level of mistrust ingrained. Communities of aboriginals are still pushed out of fertile areas their ancestors owned into barren lands, and many Aussies say "They have it easy because they get handouts", despite that goods in many inland communities cost more than coastal areas, and those same people won't make time to get to know them, creating a segregated country.

The US invaded Iraq in 2003, the country was torn apart, people killed, and for what? That isn't ancient history or even the 20th century, that is the 21st century. Calling them warmongers is not exactly a weird insult since they spend more on their military than if you combine the next 22 largest militaries in the world. I'm glad the US looks over us though, I feel pretty secure being an ally of theirs. Still doesn't mean it can't be criticised for that.

On this post I have criticised the CCP, but I also think it is right to criticise the actions of my country and those we ally too. Acknowledging problems is the first step to fixing them.

                        • @FabMan: Giving priority in schools, universities and jobs is considered gold standard in uplifting a community. India started similar initiative more than 30 years ago for uplifting of untouchables who were oppressed for centuries (actually more than few millennia) and not even considered humans. Most Aussies don't mind taxpayer funded initiatives to help Aboriginal schooling, training and welfare programs. They don't even mind losing their or their kids place to Aboriginals in jobs and universities.

Communities of aboriginals are still pushed out of fertile areas their ancestors owned into barren lands, and many Aussies say "They have it easy because they get handouts", despite that goods in many inland communities cost more than coastal areas, and those same people won't make time to get to know them, creating a segregated country.

Inherently incorrect statement. Aboriginals were never farming communities but more of hunter-gatherer ones. For argument sake lets believe what you are saying is still happening ABC news would had been all over it. Can you give one specific example of this happening anywhere in Australia?

                • @FabMan: lol I don't even know where you are from. I just said if you like communist countries go live there. Trying to pull the old racist card? Well that's the worst defense cause I don't even know if you are from here or some other country so its not being racist. .

      • +7

This is a course offered by an American company for the Chinese language, it has nothing to do with the government, why did you feel the need to bring up the CCP? Besides, the first comment is literally trying to play into racist propaganda saying that the chinese is gonna takeover australia. You're just a racist apologist lmao.

        • +2

It's the same reason that this website allows discourse on Israel/Palestine conflict on deals that have to do with that part of the world.

Would you call anyone who had a view on the IvP conflict racist towards the other side when they communicate a real issue?

For you to call me racist because I point out the CCP genocide against their indigenous Muslim population is mind boggling. You should be ashamed. If you were a decent human being you would be calling out genocide, not trying to silence discourse about it with labels of "racism".

        • If it’s just for Chinese language, why it has a national flag in the cover?

          • +2

@hello2090: Someone already pointed out that udemy does it for all foreign languages.

            • @Ducky555: Some are just getting very sensitive against anything Chinese.

Have to applaud the Murdoch media for their clever way of manufacturing opinions. People don't realise they get trained to think what the Americans want them to think. I used to think ozb members are clever enough not to fall into that propaganda war but it seems like that's not the case anymore.

      • +2

Is this Ozb post about studying CCP's history or the party's constitution? Curious to ask.

      • Dude, by saying that you prefer Australian made products you get labelled as racist…

      • Ducky555's post was objective as they come, I didn't see any endorsement of the CCP. Pretty poor to start labeling people a shill if they disagree with you. This is exactly the behaviour we complain about with the CCP.

    • +5

Thanks to Rupert Murdoch and his media, this country used to be easy with immigration from different background.

      • +1

Can't someone be welcoming or indifferent to Chinese people and their immigration but also dislike or have contempt for the CCP? We often see comments from Aussies being okay with Americans but disliking their President or their government.

    • +9

I come from China, I hate CCP. CCP ruined China and will control the world.

      Am I a racist?

  • +2

    I'm Donna Chang.

    You're Not Chinese!

  • +7

These courses come highly recommended by the Confucius Institute at the Uni of Qld.

  • +21

What is the relationship between the party and Chinese language? CCP created Chinese language and characters?

Hate your "enemy"? Learn some of their language and find out what they whisper and swear. Interested in the country, the culture or the people? Learn their language will help a lot to dive in.

Bilingual or multilingual is always an advantage no matter for our life or work.

    • The simplification of Han character, created during CCP.
Ancient wisdom of the people still up for intepration.

    • -2

CCP created Chinese language and characters?

Actually CCP DID create the characters (and Cantonese was much more widely used before CCP, in fact, many dynasties used Cantonese as the only language). It was a political move to stop people from learning traditional Chinese characters

      • +4

Han language/traditional char have muchh longerrr deeper history then then now CCP / CHINA government.

      • +9

So you should convince people to study Cantonese dialect and traditional Chinese characters (for visiting Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan only), I don't see anything would go wrong with that. Maybe the simpler Chinese characters are just for ordinary people can pick up more quickly on reading and writing? Especially for the people with poor literacy at that time after decades of wars.

In Mainland China, Singapore and Malaysia, they use Simplified Chinese characters and speak mandarin, some can also speak Cantonese and other dialects AFAIK.

Skip the politics, learning a foreign language isn't bad for anyone.

      • +1

Cantonese is not equal to traditional Chinese. Traditional Chinese was widely used in China thousands years' history. But Simplified Chinese is much easy for writing and remembering. Again, language is nothing to do with politics.

        • Simplified Chinese was created BECAUSE of politics

    • Ever since one of the last emperors there's been a constant attempt to get the whole country to speak one dominant language and to write in one language - for obvious reasons of making things work a bit more smoothly, rather than having 50 regions who don't speak the same dialect or have a common language.

The China you see today is not how it was 500 or even 100 years ago, it was a bit of a fragmented mess.

It pre dates any recent governments/rulers.

  • Wow look at you, guys, full of insane ppl brainwashed by warmonger America here. Australia is totally controlled by America.

    • +1

Really , some country wallet away from the USA seems to be providing most of our economic growth :)
