now everyone can fly with ease!!!

  • Upon presentation of a valid Air Australia ticket

Wouldn't this kind of limit the idea? I'm assuming that considering they are in administration, you would be unable to buy a ticket from them…

The offer is to assist stranded passengers!

        • Its called ethical gesture on behalf of AA ! Spread the word !

    • whoosh!

  • I guess if a stranded passenger sees this on OzBargain then that is a good thing but this isn't really a 'bargain'

    • +7

I can see where you are coming from, but this deal not necessary only needs to be seen/read by the actual stranded passengers. Apparently there are thousands of affected passengers so if one of them is your relative or close to you, you can let them know as well.

    • +3

Agree Good deed.. Not a bargain.

        • +6

How about Telstra free calls to Japan (for the tsunami)? I have no relatives or friends in Japan so I could not benefit from the deal, yet I still voted positive for it.

I also vote positive for deals in NSW or Perth only (as long as it is a good deal).

        • -1

"I can't get the bargain, so NEG."

    • Considering that the alternative is to pay $199/seat from Jetstar or Qantas, I'd consider this a bargain for anyone needing to travel back from KL.

Haven't looked at the prices, but I'd bet Bali -> KL -> Melbourne is probably less than the $400 Bali->Melbourne Jetstar's offering.

  • Air Australia lasted longer than Mal Menigna's political career at least.

Agree this is not a deal this is only available to customer that are currently stranded (a few hundred). Wont neg as its a good deed but not really a bargain.

    • +1

Ist the rules on this site something about needing to be at least 10 of an item for it to be classed as a bargain. This is an absolute bargain for those stranded from Air Australia's ridiculous business operations. Some of them were looking at paying over $1000 for a flight, if they can pay just hal of that to get home, thats a fantastic bargain given the circumstances.

Using your logic, if you are a guy, would you neg a bargain on here that is a product for girls only, "because it is only available to a customer that is different to you" ????

My 2 cents is I hope noone takes advantage of this offer from Air Asia because it is a great thing they are doing to help those stranded.

      Neg me if im wrong.

This should go to the forums.

  • +1

    Yep for the forums

  • +7

Yeah, to the forums, where nobody will see it. Pull your heads out of your arses people.

This is a great offer and extremely generous from AirAsia - one of the very few long-haul LCCs in the world who have managed to do it right. It deserves lots of thumbs up, especially if you are close to anyone currently stranded in Bali or Phuket (although I can think of worse places to be stuck!)

    • -3

the fact is, the people that are actually stranded would have been informed of this offer by other means. i seriously doubt the majority of stranded passengers would be trolling ozbargan in the likelihood a flight deal would be posted right when they need to return home. options such as contacting airlines, service desks, flight search engines, you know - places that would have a direct outcome would be of more use to them.

the fact that this is ONLY available to customers with a air australia ticket makes it a useless bargain and doesn't deserve to be bumped onto the main page. it's a waste of space and a very restricted offer that most people don't need to know about aside from reading it on the news.

well done to those that neg'd my previous comment stating this (and to the overzealous moderator that revoked my neg), the lack of intelligence and understanding what ozbargain actually is never ceases to amaze me.

      • +6

Funny enough, I'm stranded in Thailand by the Air Australia collapse, and am looking on OzBargain for flights home. My return flight was not scheduled for another 2 weeks, so I have some time up my sleeves. I have not been advised of this offer by any other means. So, your neg is pretty harsh.

        • Lawyered!

    • +6

If you honestly believe that nobody anywhere will benefit from this, your username describes you perfectly.

If even one person who views OzBargain and has someone close to them stranded in Bali or Phuket, calls and informs them of this deal, then it warrants its space on the front page. How can this be any less valuable than a lot of the garbage adorning the front page - like free Pilates apps and recitals of the latest Woolies catalogues?

      • -6

you obviously didn't read my post, read it again and try to understand it this time.

and yes there is tons of crap that makes the front page every day, incl. the cheap chinese websites like 1-day that sell absolute garbage that's not even worth the few dollars you pay for it.

encouraging deals that are either poor quality, obvious marketing/advertising or are NOT ACCESSIBLE TO THE GREATER MASS shouldn't be on the front page, period.

        forums is where this belongs.

sadly most of the drones (i imagine how you got your u/name?) would actually agree with you instead of the logic i am presenting.

        • +1

Yep, this here drone agrees with xyron, notwithstanding your superior logic which obviously leaves everybody in awe.

    • @xyron this isn't an offer for sure, these things happen because Government has stepped in and is helping stranded people.
Don't worry because stranded travelers there will be informed by local authorities and airline's customer service.

It seems to me that some friends here agreed to neg constructive comments only because they already pulled their heads out of their arses my 2 cents.

Now go negging and show how smart you're neg neg neg lol :P

  • I'm leaving for Thailand tonight, luckily with Malaysia Airlines. Tough a few of my friends are stuck in Phuket. Thanks for the help.

    • +1

Can't go wrong with Malaysian Airlines. I've never had issues with them. Ever.

  • i've noticed a few intra-asia flights(not elated to this deal but still $0) where the ticket price is $0 just pay taxes.

  • Pardon my ignorance but isn't this the exact reason why travel insurance was invented? I'm just arranging a trip to HK/China and for the sake of $120 worth of insurance, any 'out of pocket' expenses, flights or accomodation etc etc, that arise from a situation like this one will be reimbursed in full.

What really would the point be to try to arrange a flight to anywhere other than back home to Australia?

    • If your travel plans are affected by the Financial Collapse of Air Australia:
      This event is not covered under the TravelCare Insurance policy. Please refer to the Losses We do not cover under Section 2 Cancellation & Changes to Planned Journey of your policy terms and conditions which states;
Losses We do not cover under Section 2
      (f) The error, default or insolvency of a travel agent, tour operator, wholesaler, airline or other service provider.
      (g) The Financial Collapse of any service provider, or the refusal of any service provider to provide a service to You, which You prepaid, because of the Financial Collapse of another service provider; cancellations, travel delays, delayed journeys, missed connections, or travel interruptions, curtailments or diversions resulting from the Financial Collapse of any service provider; any governmental or official authority directive; or the security requirements of any service provider.
While this event is excluded from our TravelCare Insurance policy, if you purchased your airline ticket using a credit card you may choose to contact your bank to request a charge back as the airline did not provide the service you paid for.
This advice must be read in conjunction with the policy wording.

so, no, it's not why travel insurance was invented.

      • Why did I believe that an insurance company wouldn't find a way of getting out of coughing up after claim!!
Another reason why I'm feeling better about flying Cathay Pacific!

        • I think the main reason why they dont/wont payout is that an insurance company may not be liquid enough for a finanical collapse.
In this instance its only 1000 or so customers from which you'd only expect a small portion to be with any one provider.
However if a large corporation went bust, you could have 10,000 customers with one insurance provider easy, which means millions of dollars for payouts.

      • Indeed. When my flights were cancelled because of the weather, CoverMore wasn't the least bit helpful. Which is why I'll carefully read the Terms and Conditions in future.

  • Kudos to Air Asia. Much better than Jetscum's offer.

    • +1

A bit harsh. You don't have to get to KL to take Jetstar's offer. Not all Air Australia travellers stuck in Phuket/Bali want to get to KL first - they just want to go home

  • Goodo to air asia. Probably had too offer a hand offer trying to rip off Aussies when they stopped disclosing hidden taxes and fees. Btw I would have no doubt cheap online travel insurance would not cover insolvency but there are other more established and more expensive insurance providers who would. U get what u pay for!

Most of the debate above is focussed on whether this offer by Air Asia should be posted here or not. Seems to me the real issue is whether it's a good deal - and I'm not sure that it is.

If I'm stranded in Thailand, I'll be looking for a effective way to get home. Flying to KL and then trying to get a seat on an Air Asia plane seems to be making the exercise more complicated than it needs to be.

At least, why not permit customers to book the KL>Australia flight from Thailand to provide some certainty?

Also of relevance - The most likely means of getting from Thailand (or Bali) to KL is on an Air Asia flight. Interestingly, fares for this routes seem to have peaked this week (ie. Bangkok to KL is upwards from $100 this week - only $74 next week). This will be significantly more with all of Air Asia's fees. I'd suggest that Air Asia aren't doing too badly for themselves from this offer.

    • $100 phuket to kl then $56 - 64 to Australia, still cheap compare than you need to purchase ticket phuket to australia with jetstar, the main issue in here is the time value, as the travel time is longer than direct flight that jetstar have.

      • +2

$100 plus fees! - and Air Asia have a lot of them.
But don't get me wrong. Air Asia (and Jetstar) don't owe stranded passengers any favours. I'm just suggesting that this isn't quite as generous as it may initially seem.

  • A bit off topic but can anybody find the link to the spreets deal (or at least what the gist of the deal is) where air australia apparently offered a deal a few weeks/months back?

Just thinking to myself that coupon deals are where buisness go to die…

      • was this the deal that the papers are all talking about? this was a while ago? Dont think many people would have left these unused?

unless of course if you had booked near the start for travel sometime in the next 3 months?

The neg comment from that last deal is/was the reason why I never considered them ever, apparently there was another incident ages ago where people were stuck in thailand for a week waiting for another plane to arrive.

Also interesting that the user reported that the travel insurance covered part/most of the loss on a delayed/cancelled flight but people above saying that they dont cover a airline going bust. Probably confirms my suspicions that the insurance companies cant afford such a large possible payout.

        • Just looked at that deal again. Love the bit at the end, saying:

"Remember this isn't some dodgy restaurant owner not accepting bookings but a multimillion dollar airline operation. So while it is good to be cautious with group buy deals, take into account that this is a national company trying to steal marketshare from the big players."

Oh, and the deal's valid until 31 May, so you have plenty of time still to use those coupons.

  • +3

For anyone that does take the Air Asia offer and flies to KL and have to stay overnight or have to wait more than 4 hours+, please catch a bus from the LCC (Air Asia Airport) to the KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport) - should take about ~30 mins one way. If there aren't any buses available you can pay for a taxi (I haven't done this one always got the free shuttle bus).

You'll feel much better there! Buses are located outside just ask some people! Also food court outside is cheaper than inside LCC food court.
