Gl.iNet's Triband Mesh OpenWRT based router

Note: No code needed

I saw some web adverts for these being discounted on their online store so reached out to match the deal for us Aussies.

Once again based on OpenWRT so you can access all the OpenWRT goodness in the repo but is still based on Qualcomm's WiFi-SON which most other Mesh systems are based on.

Do note still based on Openwrt 15.05 due to the Qualcomm SDK not being updated by Qualcomm but all patched.

Comes standard with OpenVPN support, Wireguard support, Adguard Home built-in etc…and is easy to set these functions up with Gl.Inet's web and new app interface (look for the blue app rather than the green app) with LUCI access still sitting behind it all if you need it.

      Need to meet market trends and open up other markets. Still based on the whole OpenWRT philosophy. Pretty sure their products are the only commercially available OpenWRT based routers, and that goes from the AR150 all the way up to the B2200 (and everything in between including 4G solutions), all with a common Gl.iNet interface on top of LUCI and OpenWRT.

      There's also only so much new technology you can fit into the micro router casing. They're currently working on an AX1800 unit at the moment. (and no it's not in a micro router form factor) :)

          They were planning to make it compatible with all their mesh units (Convexa and B2200) however it may not be available in the initial release. Since it's OpenWRT based if you know your way around OpenWRT you could probably manually setup yourself there just won't be an app option to setup initially.

    Does this router have zigbee? And if so zigbee 3.0? Also can you blacklist websites with this router?

      Comes with Zigbee and Bluetooth built in however note that the Zigbee gateway function is still under development. The SDK for development is available.
      You can blacklist using Openwrt or via the built in Adguard Home or using NextDNS function.

    This or TP-Link deco M9 plus? Mainly to use zigbee and Bluetooth mesh. Vpn will be plus point but not sure how to install vpn in router tbh.

          Yes using OpenVPN but I don't think PIA supports Wireguard on OpenWRT.

          Have not played with and as mentioned the Zigbee gateway function is under development though the SDK is available. I'm waiting for Zigbee functionality as I'm building a new house at the moment :)

      I have the deco m9 plus but I think I might give it back as it seems to have very poor compatibility with zigbee products as it only have zigbee 1.2 so its not compatible with like trafidi, hue etc as they use zigbee ll, but I think gl.inet use zigbee 3.0 for their products which from what I believe is compatible with basically all zigbee devices, so when they release this zigbee feature I assume it would be pretty good?

        Hmmm ok, sorry for.a noob question but m9 plays well with Bluetooth gateway /wifi devices yea? So many standard nowadays, i lost my way. Thinking to just use blitzwolf smart security system:

          Yeah i think that should be fine, but i think what makes the m9 unique is the zigbee feature so its shame its only zigbee 1.2 and not 3.0, although its wifi mesh has pretty solid coverage i must say

            @rsingh87: I'm trying to avoid zigbee devices and stick with wifi/rf 433 or Bluetooth. The only zigbee i got atm is my deadlock so i keep it that way. Thanks

          At this point of time I've just gone with WiFi based system and tried to standardise on Tuya/Smartlife devices; Lenovo and Lazer bulbs and smart switches. Yes I'm connected to a Tuya server in China and by the looks even if I put in Home Assistant it still uses Tuya servers so no real benefit there but just seems easiest and just works including integration with Google Home. For doorbell running a EUFY 2K wireless.

          Should look at other standards but it's a matter of finding the time to research and work out how to implement. If Zigbee became available at no cost I'd have to look at to see what it gives me….or maybe not :)

          You can't install a VPN on the Deco M9. For VPN get Asus or GL.iNet.

              @Bargain-er: Hey Bargainer depends on your needs.

              Many people use one of the smaller Gl.iNet routers to provide VPN client service on their existing network without having to change the current network architecture. You can put it inside your current network, setup the VPN on it and then connect the devices to the Gl.iNet device to pass through the VPN.
              Main router -> Gl.inet router running VPN client->devices

                  @Bargain-er: There's no parental control like the more consumer based systems where there's a nice GUI.
                  You can use Openwrt to do it or you can use NextDNS (though you only get a certain amount of "traffic" for free before you have to pay) to perform the function.

        Yeah I see you've also sent a question into Tech Support @ Gl.inet around the Zigbee version. I'm waiting on an answer too. If I look at this thread here (see post 8) on the forums then an older model appears to support Zigbee 3.0 so it would be a good assumption that the B2200 does too but you'll get an answer one way or another :)

    I love my GL-AR750 which I use to extend my WiFi. Apart from being able to use the same WiFi ID to log into when moving around extreme ends of a house, what other benefits do I get be going down the GL-B2200 route? It seems relatively expensive to me. I'm just trying to work out a justification to my wife on why I should purchase this.
