iPhone 12 Mini or Wait till 13

Hi everyone, I recently broke my iPhone XS screen and the pixel bleed will soon take over my entire screen. I use my phone for tethering as I live away from home for most of the week, surviving on my spare 5S will be extremely frustrating.

I don't care for features much, and the only thing that was making me hold out for the iPhone 13 was the high refresh display. Until I found out that it will only be available on the pro models; and I'm not spending that much money on a phone. Right now, I can get a brand new sealed iPhone 12 mini for $800. Any thoughts on what I should do? Is $800 a good price?

  • iPhone 13 is pipped to have a mini too. We should find out next month or so, depends if you can hold out for Oct/Nov deliveries.

$800 for a 12 Mini seems unusually low. Assuming it's a 64GB (which isn't really enough these days), the RRP is $1,200.

Guessing it's used then, in which case be very cautious as there's many many scams out there.

    • 64 GB is plenty for me. It's a deal on marketplace that im going to pick up in person. The box is sealed. But if that's a good price, then I should just go for it then

I wouldn't. It'll end up being a scam and isn't worth the risk.

There's no reason for someone to undersell a brand new sealed iPhone.

Either there's a brick in there and has been resealed.
Or it's a stolen device and will get barred.
Or isn't local AU stock and may have warranty registration issues.
Or some other bait and switch.
Or grab your money and run.
        Or or or or or…

Sorry, I just have no faith in humanity anymore.

        • Or there's been some deals latley and it could be a totally legit price.

          • @frondono: Exactly. Many here bought one for $699 earlier this week or $799 the week before. Looks like you’re being played if someone offers you theirs for $800. I also really wanted to hold off for an iPhone 13 mini but the current prices were too good to resist for me.

            • @bozbargain: Yeah, but that's with a $55 plan over 24 months I think

              • @blueduck4: No, you could also purchase it at this price without adding any plan to it.

                • @bozbargain: I'm an idiot I could have purchased it that day. It was the same day I broke my phone but I held off because I thought you needed a plan

                  • @blueduck4: Oh that sucks! I think there will be more offers to come, it’s the 2nd time Telstra had a promo like this and JB has also dropped their prices. Maybe you can use this to get the price down from the seller you had in mind? If they can show you their receipt and the box is sealed, $700 could be a good price for both.

                  • @blueduck4: I also bought iPhone 12 outright on Telstra sale. I was about to buy iPhone 13 but the $400 discount offered by Telstra on iPhone 12 series was too good to pass. I don’t think iPhone 13 series will have any significant discounts for the first few months on sale or even longer.

                    • @buddysayshi: What price did you pick up the 12 for with telstra? Kicking myself for not picking one up then, as I’m now I’m limbo for 4 weeks til 13 comes out

                  • @blueduck4: Did you see this blueduck4?

  • I have got a 12 mini and I am happy with it because I don’t use it for much other than just making some calls/texts.
But if you are buying a phone for social media/YouTube and all that experience. This phone would be a bit of a compromise and I would recommend you going for the IPhone 12 instead, thats got a bigger screen and a much better battery life..

    • To be fair, phones at a fraction of the price of iphones will do all of those things perfectly well.

      • lol yes agreed, I got mine through work so I was just happy to get it.

It’s all about fruity brand. That’s the reason it’s one of the most successful companies ever.

  • I managed to get the iPhone 12 mini 64bg on this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/641990

Free phone when signed up for a 24 month $40 plan with Vodafone.

I would have waited for the new iPhone 13 with at least 128bg but this deal was too good to pass up. Also I realised that the iPhone 13 will not be much an upgrade from the 12 (same form factor, no refresh rate on models below pro, just a reduction of the notch, no in screen finger sensor). The only reason to wait for the iPhone 13 mini is the battery as the iPhone 12 mini battery can be better.

I think there will be other iPhone 12 mini deals leading up to and when the iPhone 13 is released, it hasn’t been selling well. Personally I think it is a great phone, small and powerful (when I pick up my old iPhone 11 it feels huge!)
