$2 more expensive than it's lowest price so far.

Still can't justify the upgrade as the i3/4GB/64GB is doing me just fine :(

It has been lower than that - it was $636.65 6 months ago.

Anyhow it is a great chromebook - the i5 model has a better screen (300nit with more colours) than the i3, as well as a removable NVMe SSD (2242 size) apart from the better processor and 8GB RAM.

This hardware with ChromeOS absolutely flies.

    • +1

Thanks for that. Must have missed that one. Still couldn't justify the upgrade at that price :)

  • +3

not chromeOS , but that Surface laptop Go deal for another 100 , seems much better deal ?

    • +1

      ChromeOS is better.

This CPU and RAM whips the Go.

      So, no is the answer.

  • For this price,. Water to get Dell with 20% eBay discount

    • +1

There are no comparable Chromebooks from Dell that will compare even with 20% discount.

  • Can this play 4K video without stuttering?

    • +3

Easily. This machine is crazy powerful for a Chromebook. ChromeOS uses far less resources than windows or Mac

      • +1

Lol this absolutely not true. We have Chromebook’s deployed at work and standard issue is 10th gen i7 with 16gb of RAM.

So many complaints of slowness and running out of memory with things like Miro and other run of the mill SaaS apps on lesser specced machines.

I wouldn’t advise getting an 8gb Chromebook, unless you’re sitting on the couch checking email / internet banking.

I would easily choose a Mac or Windows machine over this.

        • I think that says more about apps like Miro than anything else.
          e.g.
          https://community.miro.com/ask-the-community-45/miro-loading…
          https://community.miro.com/ask-the-community-45/is-it-slow-o…
          https://community.miro.com/ask-the-community-45/fullscreen-l…

Still, some apps (e.g. MS Teams, and by the sounds of it Miro) are still subpar in the browser in any OS.

Linux and Android apps in ChromeOS run in containers so likely are not as fast or efficient as native apps would be

@repeat: I'm not sure about that. We also have some folks using MacBook Pros and they don't have any issues with Miro in Chrome.

Asside from the memory issues, screen sharing in Google Meet caused our i5 and i7 Pixelbooks to melt down and be completely usuable halfway through a call. The assisted cooling helped that out with the newer Chromebooks that were rolled out, but I wouldn't confidently say that these machines are some sort of light weight revelation.

I know an M1 Macbook Air is a bit more expensive, but for some of the prices seen around here recently, it's a whole lot more machine than this hardware wise will run much faster than any Chromebook, period. Not to mention they are far more extensible than software wise than ChromeOS.

If anything I'd be waiting for a Tensor powered Chromebook… that's where the real optimisation will be at, and will hopefully bring a much better software experience.

    • it has a 1080p screen though

Bought one of these for my wife the last time they were around 650 I think. If ChromeOS suits you, and most people it's more than enough, then this machine is amazing. The build quality, the speed, the ports… It's awesome.

    • +3

I've always been a windows man but I bought one each for the wife and I and now I am officially converted. They are amazing and so fast. The only thing I find that I can't do, that I can on a Windows, is USB support for Calibre (running on Linux) to recognise my Kindle. But I have been assured it is coming out eventually in a future update. Other than that I can do everything I did on a Windows.

  • Can someone tell me why you would need this or it’s intended use ?

    • +4

      Security, simplicity and speed.
If you are not tied to windows or mac apps, and do not have access to ready IT support it can be a good option.
If you are coming from a Windows machine, MS Office on Chromebooks is not up to the Windows experience.
This model is supported with regular automatic updates until Jun 2028.
Battery life is generally great on Chromebooks.

    • +3

Lighter OS than windows. Battery can go longer.

Educational purposes since all you need is a browser and office suite.

I wish I had this when I was at uni a decade ago, 2.5kg laptops were the lightest back then with a 3hr battery life. Would've also paid attention in class instead of playing Wow during lectures.

    • Will meet the requirements of 99% of computer users.

      What are your requirements?

  • Have they put 'delete' keys on these things yet?

    • +1

      Everything + Backspace :p

    • Nope.

    • You can map keys

Hasn't the ozbargin community hate for Chromebooks changed over recent times. I sense a bit of love growing for these things.

  • If you plan to install Android apps remember this has an Intel i5. Most apps are only distributed on APKs for ARM and not for Intel x86.

    • There are some APKs that can't be installed, but most work (about 80-90%). Some are even optimised for the Chromebook. There are a few that open in a narrow window, looks to only be designed for a mobile.

  • +2

Can you wipe out the whole thing and clean install windows 10 on it ?

    • You'll need to find a bios that can boot to Windows.

  • +3

Don't forget that this thing can run most play store apps and will also run Linux apps.

Bought one last sale and love it.

    • Hi,.does it run Microsoft Office and OneDrive android apps?

      • +1

Yes, all the Microsoft Office apps work and so does OneDrive. It has been pointed out that it is not the Full Office experience like that on Windows, but if you are like me and only use Office to view files it is more than enough.

        • It is also fine to use Office to edit files if you have subsciption.

    • Being able to do it and it actually being a good experience are very different things.

Every Linux app I’ve tried to run works, but is cumbersome and clunky / glitchy.

The Spotify Android app is crap on a Chromebook, many others I’ve used have that “I’m an app that has just been ported from a phone feel”.

I’ve used ChromeOS almost everyday for the last two years and it is getting better, but I wouldn’t list “running Linux and Android apps” as feature… until Google really take ChromeOS seriously (which I think they’re starting to do), it will remain a fairly limited OS.

  • Is this good to use Adobe.

    • Yes, you can use the full Adobe suite on a chromebook

      • +1

Isn't that just the mobile version unless you remote into a Windows machine?

I was going to post this .. but wanted to price match at officeworks before posting :)

    • +2

      $664.05 - nice

  • Pity Thunderbird doesn't work on Chromebook. Don't think Firefox either.

    • +1

      Except under Crostini/Linux :)

  • is memory expandable? SD card reader?

  • Can this run games off the Play Store OK?

Thinking of getting this for son and remote learning as his School uses Google for everything - but having the option for him to have some games on there would be good.

Not sure as it's an Intel processor.
