I made something much cheaper using a "wifi inching relay" from AliExpress for $15. And plus some wires, a case, total was less than $20. Uses their Tuya app to sync to other apps.

  • +11

Fantastic product. My garage door opener broke, and took it to so many different places to get a new one, and none had one. Was going to buy from the manufacturer when someone suggested the Meross, and works like a charm

  • +6

Very impressed with this this. Works well and the app is good. Highly recommend

  • +8

I have the HomeKit version and am super happy with it. It is my most reliable smart home product.

    • +1

Mine always says the device is not responding, yet still opens the door.

      • +1

Same here, but I'm not too concerned as long as it works.

        • +3

I would get messages from HomeKit that the door was jammed, then I adjusted the opening/closing time in the Meross app and HomeKit was happy.

      • Mine, in HomeKit says “obstruction detected” but always works.

        • +2

Yeah you need to update the “close time” in the meross app.

Mine takes 22 seconds. So I had to change the close time to 25 sec

Anything less than the actual movement time will result in that (very annoying tag and error) error.

Once you fix it, you’ll have more confidence if you’re not at home whether the door got blocked or not. Trust.

      • Happens with Siri requests often for access type and Bluetooth type devices. I guess the action hasn’t fully completed by the time Siri responds back

    • Agree, have it on my gate and garage door. Works like a charm.

    • mine was until the last firmware update, now its hit and miss through homekit, always updating, works fine through their app.

  • Have some meross devices. Not 100% impressed but they work. Picked up something half price for this with the Tuya app.

  • +12

    Now I need a garage!

    • +66

Look out for a Garage sale

      • I got one real cheap in a 1992 garage sale

  • I have a roller door but i want automation… :(

  • How do I get 20% off? I am on the checkout page and it's not showing any discount.

FYI: I am a prime member and it's giving me delivery estimate for tomorrow (not sure if this is something to do with 20% discount).

    EDIT: It worked!

    • +3

There's a checkbox for 20% discount on the product page. Try ticking that then add to cart.

  • Is this easy to install yourself? I am due to install a new motor but the installer doesnt touch 3rd party products as he cant guarantee it.

    • +1

Super easy to install, only takes 20mins when I did it

    • It’s easy to do yourself.

If you did want your installer to do it just tell them to connect where a wired connector would go to.

My electrician did it just as he was there doing something else and it took 10 mins

      • i did ask him but he said he wouldnt do it as it would void his work guarantee on the motor hes providing me as im attaching a 3rd party version.

        • +3

That's bogus… it's really just a remote and does not impact the mechanics of your garage door. I guess if he doesn't want to do it, he'll find different excuses.

        • Get him to replace the motor.

Then add the Meross module on yourself afterwards.

          • @kickling: Yeh that's why I'm asking if it's easy lol, wonder if I can do it myself

            • @MeesusEff: The only slightly difficult part is knowing where to plug the red and black wires into the control board of the motor. Should be in the garage door manual but the installer might be able to point out the spots while he is there.

        • I was a little unsure myself. I had a model not on their list (but the brand was compatible) so I sent them an email and got a helpful and prompt response with diagrams.

But at the end of the day, as long as you have a service terminal then you're good to go. You just need to know how to affix the wires to the terminal points.

      • Sorry noob question - how do I find where the wired connector would go to? I have Merlin garage door opener and it has 8 ports at the back

        • Merlin 430R here. I connect to "P/B" and "GND". The door should operate if you briefly connect the two pins with a wire. Mine only has 5 pins to choose from though

          • @orza: How does this compare to the Merlin connectivity? I understand that Merlin requires a subscription to link with google assistant, so this is better, right?… but I also need to get an infrared sensor with this??

  • Bought it.. Didn't have time to check combability. Hope it works

    • +2

They pretty much work with any gate or garrage door. I have installed a few.

If in doubt, watch a video on how to test the compatibi lo ity using a wire

      • I saw how to short circuit it but thought I'd just buy it and figure it out later haha.

Thanks though, you've given me more confidence.

        • i emailed support about the garage door that i got quoted on, sent them a picture in the manual as i couldnt test it, they replied back the next day so if you want to email them they are pretty good :)

        • Works with mostly anything unless really old I think. Can always return it to amazon if not compatible.

  • +11

Came to ozb looking for a bidet, walking away with a WiFi garage door opener

    Seems about right

  • +6

Got the wofea equilavent ones that you can get on AliExpress at a fraction of the cost. Works fantastic.

    • +2

Yes, I got that Wofea deal too. Works great, and I use it with a Merlin garage door.

      • ^this, exact same, works great, easy to install

    • Can you get the Wofea with AU plugs from AliExpress?

      • yes

  • Does this work with Merlin?

  • -2

Can anyone confirm if voice control via Alexa AU works correctly?

    • +1

It works but not as well as with Google from my experience.

      • -2

Are you using the "Meross" or "Smart Meross" skill in Alexa AU?
Does Alexa AU support PIN number to open?
What are the exact voice commands to open and close the door? And to check the state?
The vast majority of the comments from reviewers on Amazon states that voice control only works properly on Alexa US, and claim false advertising from Meross.
Meross may have good customer service, but have yet to resolve support for Alexa in Australia for more than 2 years now.
I would not recommend this product if you plan to use Alexa AU.

        • +1

Using Meross according to the Alexa skills when I checked. Thought I was using Smart Meross tbh.
Haven't used Alexa to operate the garage door for a while but I think it was something like "Alexa, ask Meross to ….".
Agreed the Alexa skill implementation can be much much better.

    • +1

I dont see any wrong in your comment. Why are you getting negg'd ?

      • +5

I have 3x garage doors (2x sectional & 1x roller), and I am using 3x Meross smart garage door opener controllers for over 2 years now.
My comments are based on my own personal experience and research.

I believe it is illegal to knowingly false advertise a product feature that does not work correctly or as expected.
In this case, Meross claims their product works with Alexa, when in fact it only works with Alexa US, but not Alexa AU.
This issue has been reported to Meross Support multiple times, therefore Meross is aware of it.
Given this product is been sold in Australia, this should be made clear to Australian consumers.

As with all my comments, I try to inform the community of the facts so that you can make the right decision for yourself.

I asked the forum moderators the same question, however I was told that comment voting is not moderated.
And yet I thought that Australians value freedom of speech?

I suspect either Meross employees or supporters, do not like my negative (but factual) comments about their product.

By the way, I have also tried the Meross Smart WiFi LED Strip lights - it was just horrible.
The Meross App kept losing connectivity to the strip lights even though the WiFi Signal was at 91%.
The Meross App could not turn the LED lights off - the App showed lights in the off state, but the lights are still on, just in a different colour ;)

        • +1

I support your good intentions. I have upvoted you.

        • I wish i saw this before - voice control doesn't work with my Alexa AU app

  • Thanx Op.. got one..

  • +1

I purchased this last time it was on special. Emailed them asking for a guide, and they provided a heap of information that helped: A video, a diagram. It was top notch. Would highly recommend.

  • Does this work on roller doors?

    As opposed to panel doors?

    • Sure does

      • Thank you

    • Yes it can be done, however getting the exact position of the reed switch sensor right so it works correctly & reliably on roller doors can be tricky.

  • Does this sense/report the state of the door - whether it is open/opening or closed/closing?

    • It does And that’s the biggest advantage as can always check the state from the app

  • +4

If you are going to be remotely opening and closing your garage door, it is a good idea to install safety sensors if you don't have it.

    • -2

Pretty sure garage doors already have this built in.

      • Not sure about the new garage door installs, but mine didn’t have them

        • Wait maybe I am misunderstanding…

so if something was obstructing the door when it was closing it would just keep trying to close and not immediately start opening again?

          • @trapper: I am talking about this.
            https://www.bunnings.com.au/chamberlain-obstruction-detectio…

If the beam is obstructed the door won't go down.

Otherwise your door will go down and most likely go back up after hitting something and putting a fair amount of force on it (depending on your opener). You wouldn't want that to be a car, pet or a child.

            • @Aureus: Ah ok, yeah different thing altogether.

I don't think those are necessary for a normal garage door, they already have obstruction detection built in.

You can stop it from closing with a single finger and it will automatically re-open, it's not going to crush anything.

              • @trapper: true, I've watched mine hit the car and shrugged it off, didn't warrant taking 2 steps to hit the button to stop it.

But unfortunately, apparently the law requires an infrared sensor.

                • @SlickMick: Hang on, what law says that??

I've never even seen a garage door with an infrared sensor.

                  • @trapper: If you read further, it isn't confirmed whether it is law or not, but it is a standard.

I think you'll find that if you automate your garage door and don't have a sensor, you've given your insurance company reason to escape covering you if a claim had even a remote connection to the garage door.

I would expect a high portion of automated garage doors would have a sensor. I'd say no professional installer would install the automation without the sensor.

                    • @SlickMick:

If you read further, it isn't confirmed whether it is law or not, but it is a standard.

Well that is what I am asking, what exactly do I read further, what standard are we talking about?

                      • @trapper: I'm not good with links. See mod's link at top of page " Be aware of safety standards and laws regarding the use and installation of this before purchasing."

                        • @SlickMick: That doesn't link to any actual law or standard though, just to another ozbargain post - which is apparently wrong looking at the responses.

I would love to read what the actual standard says, but it doesn't seem to even be quoted anywhere on the entire internet - and not cheap to purchase.

                          • @trapper: The standard is AS/NZS 60335.2.95, and when I had my motor fitted by somebody in the field, I was told the requirement is it needs to have an infrared sensor. I've never seen any suggestion that this isn't correct. But I guess if you have to see it in writing, it's gonna cost you :)

      • My opener didn't and it is only a couple of years old and one of the major brands. Easy enough to add it on.

  • What’s the best one that works with iPhone

    • This works well with iphone but if you want a homekit version there is one available which costs quite a bit more (this version will do everything you need).

Integrates well with Alexa or Google Assistant so you can use voice commands to your phone/car if you like to open/close and check if it's open. Also can have it remind you the garage is open after a certain amount of time or time at night (Also will auto close at a certain time though I would make sure you have garage sensors if using automations).

Samsung Smart-things also allows it to open the garage when you arrive and close when you leave if that's your thing.

      • I got the HomeKit version a year or so ago. Well worth it as it is significantly cheaper than any other competitive products.

      • +1

Have you tried voice control via Alexa AU?
        See my previous comment above.

    • iPhone or homekit? iPhone, can use this one with google assist. If you want to use it with home kit, they have another one. This is google and alexa.

  • +2

If you want to integrate Meross devices with home assistant be warned that they will eventually start blocking you for too many API calls.

You can email them to get unblocked but then it will just happen again anyway.

Pretty terrible, give us a local API.

    • +1

Hey. thanks for sharing this. Any way to reduce the number of API calls?

    • +1

      Hi,

Meross blocks it from connecting to home assistant? Or blocks it completely and it doesn’t work with its app at all?

      • +1

        It's own app still works.

It blocks you from accessing their public API, so home assistant and other 3rd party apps can't connect.

        • +1

          Thanks. Still ordered one 😀

    • +1

      Wow that's (profanity) useless then.

  • Got one, thanks OP and Good luck to me :D

  • Works with Homebridge if you don't want to buy the HomeKit version.

  • deleted comment

  • +1

I bought one but have a question. Once this is installed, will my existing remotes still work?

    • +1

      Yes they'll still work.

  • +3

Why not buy the Wofea one from Aliexpress? Pretty sure it would be less than half the price. Is there something this one has that Wofea doesnt?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/600376

Edit: $23.xx right now on Aliexpress

    • Just had a look through the linked deal and ordered a Wofea. Cheers for the heads up.
