  • Are scrum masters still a thing?

    • +9

Absolutely, many businesses are still just beginning their "agile journeys"! Scrum masters continue to be strangely overpaid and in demand.

      • -1

But why? Agile is very over rated. It is dumbing down project management with plenty of gaps.

        • +5

Why use agile: agile allows you to ship fast food code and in the race to the bottom sheer output wins over quality.

I hate that agile prioritises shipping a product over shipping a quality product, but in the end it makes sense that as long as the clients needs are met exactly and not a bit more we should prioritise speed. I disagree with agile when its used for projects that dont have external stakeholders (the clients), but what can you do?

          • +5

@Jenny Death: IMHO and experience, Agile is used as a "fancy" term everywhere. Every projects/organizations/teams have their own style of agile/scrum which is NOT a disciplined Scrum(Agile). To add to your thoughts on quality, DevOps is the way that the teams are slowly crawling into, DevSecOps to be better, which is quality + security + agile (Operations and Devs work together or flexibly) AND, with the "Cloud" it is all seamless, as the devs don't have to wait for Ops to spin up a machine/hardware, just it is all in seconds on the click of a button. Code is quick to market through DevOps ALONG with plenty of automated tests/checkpoints during merge/build/deploy.

@Jenny Death: Probs get a new Scrum Master mate. Sounds like you've just got a Project Manager who did these courses and is on $150k now cause it's the new buzz word. Agile should focus on a balance of Quality, cost and time

        • +4

Like with anything in business, there are those knowing what they are doing and there are "emperor's new clothes". The latter sets a bad rap.

        • +1

Agile when implemented correctly, is actually really valuable and cuts out uneccesarry time and cost. Personally I've seen great Agile Scrum Masters and then just old Project Managers who have done a course and charge out ridiculous rates and call themselves Scrum Masters.

          • @plachhani: Ridiculous, PMs were already overpriced, now they're doubly overpriced because the new title sounds like it belongs on the sports field.

      • +1

Oh wow you're not lying, just did a search on seek - up to ~150k a year 😄

      • Software companies?

      • Nice, we couldn’t f#^%# master basic waterfall so we are gona try advanced agile.

I couldn’t drive an automatic car but I’m gona try driving a manual truck.

        Wish me luck

I'm more of a lean six sigma person. Do it right rather than just fast. Worked with agile teams before and they test an idea and if it works give it to the 6 sigma team to fully implement.

  • +1

Combining a dodgy projet manager with this and you got the a sh** show ready

  • +5

I have enrolled so many free courses on Udemy, but not read any of them.

Deal with this stuff at my work. Not a fan. I just dont see the benefits that couldn't easily be otherwise achieved by actual good people. I suppose i see a little benefit in it reigning in/simplifying people and processes otherwise incompetent, poor at collaborating, or just dont care. Really popular in our Digital/Web type areas though, i guess they had to progress from post-its and crayons sooner or later.

Scrum masters have ceremonies which talks about gathering in person somewhere fancy. Spare no expense to perform those ceremonies. They can fly from across globe to meet in person.
I was literally told by one of Scrum Masters.

Whosoever invented this practice, clearly just thought about themselves. Lol.

In one of the big 4 banks, BAs and Scrum Masters were given Macs. While other DevOps/Cloud guys had windows lappi. While they actually wanted Macs.

What’s the point? Same as Scrum ceremonies.

I thought that the number 8 was the scrum master, but now it's an overpaid project manager.

No wonder the Wallabies are so sh*t.

Would this qualification be sufficient to work at Falcon Carwash?

    • +1

I think this is the kinda qualification that Tina needs to undertake, she's been too busy feathering it to do the job is what Tim has been saying.

      • +1
